To think, get rid of the driving restrictions, make parking easier and watch Oxford Street flourish 🤷‍♀️

Just that really

https://metro.co.uk/2025/01/28/oxford-street-suffers-fatal-blow-multiple-retailers-announce-leaving-22447406/

How many shops are closing in Westfield, both branches? Londoners want to drive.

Oxford Street suffers killer blow after multiple retailers say they're leaving

Surrounding areas being London and the outer boroughs and counties ie Essex, Kent, Sussex etc

@mumofoneAlonebutokay there a car park under Hyde Park isn't there? 5 minutes walk or so from Oxford St (Marble Arch end).
Park there and get one of the buses 🤔

I'm in the east and there are so many cars and people moaning about driving

I think that Oxford street needs to be saved, and to do so they need to encourage people in the surrounding areas to drive in, park locally and cheaply and then be able to easily get one bus to Oxford street

I hate the idea of pedestrianising Oxford street myself but wouldn't a tram be about as effective as making it bus only?

As much as retail is dying, Oxford street needs to be supported to thrive

There are 4 tube stations on Oxford st, numerous bus routes, and hundreds of bike rentals, how are cars going to save anything other than cause traffic jams and pollute?

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2025 17:24

@Needmorelego snap!

Needmorelego · 28/01/2025 17:25

@Ginmonkeyagain yep !
I think there's another one further along the top of the park in the direction of Lancaster Gate. Then you just get a bus (or the
Central Line) to Oxford St.

CrownCoats · 28/01/2025 17:26

Only someone who doesn’t live in London would suggest this. It takes absolutely ages to get into central London by car. Even from one side of zone one to the other. Nobody would opt to drive into Oxford street.

As a disabled person, you can already drive into central London and park easily. The rest of us would chose the quicker and cheaper option of using the tube.

Notonthestairs · 28/01/2025 17:28

I used to work off Oxford Street and agree the last thing it needs is more cars. It's not just Oxford Street itself but driving in the centre is incredibly slow anyway.
Pedestrianised and with a decent tram and it would be way more user friendly.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2025 17:28

Also Oxford st is horrid. Londoners generally try to avoid shopping there.

Heronwatcher · 28/01/2025 17:29

I lived in SW London and I would genuinely rather have gauged my eyes out than driven into Oxford street. These days as well as parking you’d also have to abandon the congestion charge. And if you did the traffic would be even worse than it is now, no way would it encourage me to visit.

The things that do make me go to a physical shop are (a) my daughter who likes looking in shops (and I humour her), (b) wanting to see a big purchase like a sofa in real life, and (c) getting my refillable shampoo and conditioner things filled up (on Oxford Street). Otherwise I wouldn’t go into a shop at all, especially one on Oxford street.

God this reminds me of Mike Read's article when he decided not to run for London Mayor and back Boris. All parking underground . That was nearly 20 years ago now but remains one of the unintentionally funniest things I've ever read. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2007/jul/17/imbackingboris

That was hilarious, what an idiot! I wonder what he thinks about Boris nowadays?

I do live in London

Please tell me where I can park close to Oxford street for free as a disabled person, so i can go myself 😄

Oxford Street has been dying since the large department stores started to go out of business Debenhams, House of Fraser, BHS, Top Shop all disappeared years ago.

People shopping in London now are either the super rich who prefer Bond Street and Knightsbridge or those looking for something quirky and original in Soho or Covent Garden.

It's not parking that keeps me from Oxford Street. It's the blandness of the remaining retailers.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/01/2025 17:32

It's not easy enough to get to imo

People should be able to drive in and park for cheap, with a clear bus route to get to Oxford street

What? I live in the outskirts (zone 6) and absolutely would not want to drive to Oxford Street. Quicker to take the train and much less stressful. We used to live more centrally and most people didn't own cars, or (like us) used them to go out of London rather than more into London.

I'm with the PP who said I'd rather pedestrianise it, than add more cars!

The reasons I don't go to Oxford Street are - it's too busy, too noisy, i prefer my own local high street / shopping centre. And yes, nowadays I can shop online too.
What might tempt me to go - taking my preteen daughter as an experience (and having it pedestrianised would be a bonus for that), or a particular event on.

Bjorkdidit · 28/01/2025 17:33

Stupid idea. It would take forever to drive there and however many parking spaces there were, they'd be constantly full with people waiting for others to leave.

Runssometimes · 28/01/2025 17:33

Love the idea of pedestrianising Oxford St, would make pavements much less crowded and easier to cross back and forth. I think the proposal is not to have have cycle ways on it which I support as a cyclist as long as the routes either side are safe. Makes sense to completely pedestrianise it so people can wander about and ideally some outdoor seating etc.

i don’t at all agree most Londoners want to drive. Most Londoners want less pollution, more space to walk and socialise and feel safe (not getting almost run over by speeding cars). In fact most don’t have a car, I don’t and I’m a Londoner too. I don’t see why we should give others the privilege of storing their private property on our public spaces. I wouldn’t dream of driving into central London and never did even when I owned a car. If those who can walk, cycle and take public transport do then there’s less congestion for people that can’t do that and need to drive. Nothing stopping you from driving and parking in Soho or surrounding streets. It’s not like you can park on Oxford st as is so nothing really changes for you other than not being able to drive the length of it, not like you can park outside M&S, get back in and drive up to Boots right now?

Several studies also show that walkers and cyclists are likely to spend more money on high streets. It’s a fallacy that people who drive spend all the money - they drive to retail parks usually. Oxford St like most high streets rely on passing, impulse purchases. And Oxford Street is also for tourists, most of whom aren’t driving.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 28/01/2025 17:34

Online shopping and money laundering fronts are what are ruining Oxford Street. If anything, pedestrianising it and making it a pleasant relaxing place to be would improve prospects, rather than having constant awful traffic meaning you can't easily cross the street and are dealing with all the fumes and beeping horns.

It will vary depending on your starting point but this pretty much does exist already.
People drive and park at edge of London car parks and tube or bus in.

Bryonyberries · 28/01/2025 17:36

High streets everywhere need cheaper rents and free parking facilities to compete with online shopping. At the moment a delivery fee is cheaper than an hours parking in many places.

I'd love high streets to be as enjoyable as they were in my teens. These days they are sad affairs with little to encourage people to them and having to pay a small fortune to do so in parking. My local town parking has gone up to £6 for four hours!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/01/2025 17:37

Beeping horns are a part of londons hustle and bustle. It's a major city like new york, the hustle and bustle is what makes it great

Oxford street is for tourists of course but encouraging people in to do their clothes shop or making it easier for a day out for families will surely help it

9 50 an hour to park atm on the link provided - lowering these parking charges with spending incentives would be great to encourage families to come and spend in the retail shops

Hmmm no, I don't think so. Online shopping has done for Oxford Street.

shockeditellyou · 28/01/2025 17:37

No-one wants to drive to Oxford Street and I have never known anyone to drive to Stratford Westfield. The last thing we need is more cars.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2025 17:39

Also the Elizabeth line that stops at Bond st is fully wheelchair accessible.
