To think Princess Di was killed

There OK I said it. You hoo, crazy conspiracy theorist over here…

Yes, I know they had an inquiry though anyone high up enough to kill a Royal could snowball an Inquiry or influence the outcome ? I think it’s naive to think the law is this perfect thing.

Ive always found it odd that she was labelled a “loose cannon” by the press and was campaigning against landmines. It was said that it caused a lot of noses out of joint in politics. I would have thought that weapons dealers and the industry would have taken a huge hit.

There aren’t many celebrities or organisations that could have taken on the weapons or arms industry as powerfully as Diana. It was until then an issue that nobody touched.

Since her death there’s still landmines and the issue has never really been addressed.

I wonder if she’d been alive today what she’d be doing. Not hard to imagine her visiting children impacted by war and maybe even Palestinian refugees, beaming images around the world to restore some sanity and humanity.

I dont think we realise the humanity, bravery and brilliance she had. Could have been going to glamorous events and being a Princess but instead she was carrying on even when powerful people were upset.

I wonder how powerful those people were or was it someone British. Men don’t take a liking to women with power and it amazes me more that she wasn’t killed deliberately in the context of this.

What are the chances she would die at such a young age and to not be wearing a seat belt seems bizarre to me. Just too many coincidences.

Like it or not, the tabloids influence public opinion.

Her series of affairs did nothing to enhance her public image. Whether it was Oliver Hoare, James Hewitt, 'Squidgygate', Will Carling...

Breaking up marriages has never been a good look!

She made mistakes. So did the men involved. Or is it only women who are supposed to be 'pure.'

Anyotherdude · 28/01/2025 21:37

I don’t know if YABU. How old were you when she died? Were you there when her car crashed?
Lots of “reports” are just what people surmised. Unless you have personal insight to the tragic events of nearly 30 years ago, you’re probably just buying into a conspiracy theory…

Did you meet her? That's lovely! Wish I had!

I only saw her from a distance. DH saw her in her car arriving at a royal premiere in Leicester Square.

What was the announcement that she was going to make?

No clue what you are talking about . Have you replied to the wrong person?

YourAzureEagle · 28/01/2025 21:39

I have great doubts that JFK was killed by Oswald acting alone or that Dr David Kelly took his own life, but in the case of Diana, I think it would have been impossible to stage the accident - I think it was just a case of synchronicity of a drunk driver, press in hot pursuit, maybe another car in the way, and a genuine accident.

Theunamedcat · 28/01/2025 21:40

She had a reputation for being emotional and a bit unstable didn't she throw herself down the stairs while pregnant once? Her eldest son used to push notes under her door while she had locked herself in its not a big reach to a suicide attempt

She made mistakes. So did the men involved. Or is it only women who are supposed to be 'pure.'

The affairs clashed massively with her public image. The 'sainted' Diana breaking up marriages, and having to be spoken to by the police for harassment (think it was Oliver Hoare, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm going on my memory!)

The men involved were not the Princess of Wales. The same Princess who batted her eyelashes and sadly opined that there were three people in her marriage. She couldn't have it both ways!

SophiaSW1 · 28/01/2025 15:50

She got in a car driven by a drunk driver and wasn't wearing a seatbelt. I think it's way more likely that was the cause.

This.

The simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Absolutely her popularity was starting to wane. All the disclosures of multiple lovers, some of them married, whilst railing at Charles for his one affair, had started to tarnish her image.

Hanging out with Dodi Al Fayed wasn't winning her any fans either.

I agree. OP you were quite young when she died so wouldn't have really been exposed to the negative publicity. I am older than you and can remember it well. Her various dalliances with married men were not looked upon with much favour, I can assure you.

William once pushed a note under a toilet door when she had gone to the toilet to have a quiet cry.

Suggesting this was a suicide attempt is pretty disgusting.

I am older as well. There was some criticism. But there was far more criticism of Charles and Camilla was pretty hated.

You can’t make someone choose not to wear a seatbelt.

You can if you make sure it does not work

Then there is the matter of why they embalmed her so soon after she had sadly died

That was also gone into at the inquest. The short answer was 'It was August'.

Yep. You have to wonder about the complete absence of basic Common Sense sometimes!
😂

I think if Diana had lived, the tide may have turned more against her, depending on how she behaved.

Whatever you might think about Camilla's and Charles's past, Camilla has done a spectacular job of re-inventing herself!

Seriously? Make that make sense?

There is a difference between making sure a seatbelt doesn't work, and not wearing a seatbelt at all??!

Who are you accusing of making sure it did not work?

TaggieO · 28/01/2025 21:47

The functionality of the seatbelts was tested following the crash. They did work. And there are dozens of paparazzi shots which show she wasn’t wearing it when they set off so it was definitely her choice to not put it on.

Whether the accident was an accident or not is neither here nor there - the deciding factor in the deaths of people in that car is the one with a seatbelt lived and the ones who didn’t wear one did not.

She wasn't sainted. Lots of people have used their positions to bring about positive change. We don't expect them to be saints. This is silly. If she had extra marital affairs, then she was bad? Or mad? Sounds Victorian. She was a fallible human. It's true that Camilla was there before her marriage started, so not sure what was the issue with her saying there were 3 people in her marriage.

A PR firm has been able to reinvent Camilla because Diana died. It means lots of false things are now routinely claimed about Diana.

I would have liked even that to be honest.

Whether you approve of her or disapprove she was an incredible woman in history. No woman last century or this has surpassed her. Which is why it surprises me that people in Britain allow the press to run her down, you'd think they'd be proud. She was a real ambassador for Britain.

Only other person I'd liked to have met besides her from our time period is Nelson Mandela.

Mercedes examined the seatbelts thoroughly after the crash - as well as all the car's functions. It was in their interests to do so as their reputation was at stake (as I'm sure you can imagine).

If anything had been tampered with they'd have screamed it from the rooftops - Mercedes-Benz are no small fry to be cowed or pushed around are they!

They found NOTHING untoward that would have contributed to the accident or the passenger and driver deaths.

And are you suggesting that the mysterious assassins tampered with all the seatbelts of all the cars in the Ritz garage, plus the car that Diana and Dodi had arrived at the Ritz in earlier that evening (a different car)?

As they could not have known in advance which car would be used to transport the couple back to Dodi’s apartment (as the decision to take a different car was made by Dodi and Henri Paul 30 minutes of so before they left), nor what side of the car Diana would be sitting in.

That seems farfetched!

Mercedes were not allowed to test the seatbelts

FFS it happened in 1997! Just leave it. Find something else to wear your tin foil hat about.

or… don’t police people and let them think about what they like. Just a thought.
