Not me, but my parents. They had an awful run last year when every time they'd book a holiday one of them would end up in hospital. Happened five times in a year! Every single time, they were fully refunded for their trips.

StrawberrySquash · 30/01/2025 21:21

Had to cancel for medical reasons. Lloyds paid out, minus an excess.

Had an allergic reaction on a plane to the USA - was rushed from the plane straight to a&e in an ambulance and then looked after in hospital - my travel insurance paid the bill of around $10000!

Last Christmas I was meant to go away on a package holiday but caught Covid just before and couldn’t go. Not just that it was Covid but I was too ill to go anywhere.

Travel insurance were really good and accepted the Covid test as proof that I was telling the truth and paid out minus the excess .

Dd injured herself abroad last year and had to go to hospital ended up with mri's, xrays, iv drip, a cast and was discharged after a few hours. Bill of £2.5k which was repaid in days of the claim being made.

My parents had a 4 hour delay going from London to New York and insurance paid them more than the cost of the actual return flights!? It was so surprising, so free return flights at £1200 plus another £200 each basically thanks to 4 hour delay.

Never previously claimed on travel insurance but always buy it. Just under £500 for annual policy because of pre-existing conditions.
I should be on a much looked forward to holiday right now but had to cancel. Not because of illness but because I did as you are supposed to do, and notified them of a minor unrelated new issue. DH had a chest infection and was awaiting an x-ray. He wasn't ill, doctor said fine to travel. I thought the insurance company would just exclude the new condition but no. They promptly withdrew all medical cover for his preexisting and completely unrelated conditions.
So we cancelled as I'm not prepared to travel without insurance. If they pay up we'll still be £200 out of pocket for the excess on a holiday.

When my DM died the week before our holiday the insurance paid for the full value of the holiday. They just requested the death certificate. It was a few years ago.

EffinMagicFairy · 30/01/2025 21:57

Emergency appendicitis in France, will never ever go anywhere without it.

JustMarriedBecca · 30/01/2025 21:57

Air traffic issues last year. Stranded in Greek airport. Insurance didn't pay out but easyJet paid our hotel bill for an extra week plus flights back via Paris and a stopover there.

Free trip to Paris. Yes please.

My husband spent 2.5 weeks in a hospital in Spain, costing €1000 a day. He had life saving surgery in another private hospital. Then repatriated to the UK. Hotels paid for me. In all cost was about £25,000.

BuntyCollocks · 30/01/2025 22:04

Dental abscess in Florida - didn’t have to pay a thing.

Serenity45 · 30/01/2025 22:33

A few times! Broken ankle in St Lucia - paid for treatment and a row of 3 seats to stretch out on return flight. Torn calf muscle in Barbados paid for examination / treatment.
DH got a nasty gastric infection in Mexico and was in a lovely private suite in hospital for 8 days. All covered as was an extra payment for each day in hospital and taxis for me to visit daily.

Bearhunt468 · 30/01/2025 23:15

Ali accident. Covered the cost of going to hospital and the treatment plus partial refund of ski hire and lift pass as couldn't ski

ThisBrickPombear · 30/01/2025 23:19

When my mum broke her leg in the Caribbean and spent 2 weeks in hospital there, had surgery followed by a medical repatriation- total cost around £65,000. Getting ill and requiring medical care the USA or Caribbean is scarily expensive!

Can anyone posting here share which insurer they went with, if they're happy to recommend? I need to sort travel insurance and I'm wondering who is best to go with.

Staysure

Staysure

What I like about staysure is the accept the issues you’ve got but only ask the real important questions like have you been hospitalised etc rather than the raft of random, cant remember questions non specialist insurers ask

discoversmatch · 31/01/2025 05:49

10 year old airlifted to hospital from the ski slope with suspected broken neck.

Emergency neurosurgeon called out, four different hospitals etc.

Fortunately all paid for but importantly, he was ok!

Deljay · 31/01/2025 06:07

I've had to claim twice in my life, and both were paid but in both cases I had to battle for years to get the claim paid and go to the Ombudsman etc.

I don't really believe in insurance? I buy it but... They will take your money and screw you if they can. My legitimate claims were denied based on... nothing. The denials were absolutely baseless. If I had not kept on fighting I would be bankrupt.

Philanne123 · 31/01/2025 17:23

Can anyone help with travel insurance my granddaughter spent 5 years at university saved up really hard working all hours.
She booked a holiday to Asia and separate flights, her auntie who she classed as a 2nd mum passed away on 23rd December aged 50. She cancelled the holiday because of funeral etc.
She got a credit note back for her flights but the insurance company want pay her for the holiday as auntie is not an immediate family is this right as to my granddaughter she was everything.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 04/10/2025 23:24

Missed port insurance on a cruise got £400 back.

fizzyroselemonade · 04/10/2025 23:28

£2500 holiday paid back in full after a family member fell seriously ill 3 days before we were due to fly. Even included the meals we’d paid for on the flights. Needed a GP certification that we couldn’t have predicted it and that there were no prior health conditions

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 04/10/2025 23:33

Had to cancel a ski holiday due to my ex having a recurrence of labyrinthitis & vertigo a few days before which was likely to last a couple of weeks. They asked me to recoup what I could and they paid me back the rest minus the excess. Very easy, no drama.

Musicaltheatremum · 04/10/2025 23:40

Husband had a brain tumour. We had insurance that covered it. He'd been stable for years then suddenly about 2 weeks before we were due to go he deteriorated with the tumour growing again. Got all costs back. We were going to Madeira.
