Back in Feb 1983 I had a MASSIVE crush on a lad - I knew my mum wouldn’t like him even back then as he’s working class ! 😮 - and she was a snob!!

Anyway I’m pleased to confirm that we got to know each other, made a connection, and now in 2025 I’m pleased to say he’s the most important person in my life 😊 - my raison d’etre !!

we overcame the odds - I love my ‘Working Class Hero’ ❤️❤️

Just for context in February 1983 Kajagoogoo were no 1 with ‘Too Shy’.

So what were you doing in Feb 1983??!

I can’t believe that me, the shy, awkward unhappy girl in Feb 1983 - well my dream came true ! ❤️

Feb 83 I was 14. Saturday night I would have gone roller skating at the local sports centre which was 2 years old. But the walls in the main hall moved when you touched them! It was incorrectly built and demolished within 10 years of being built!!! It was named after the city's only Olympic gold medallist!!
Then to the Chinese chip shop to play daley Thompson's decathlon on the arcade game they had!
Then the park to hang around until 10pm!

I think my dream came true in that I had to get out of that village where everyone knew everyone, where the school I was going aimed to make us dockers, factory workers, shop assistants...when I was 17 and doing 4 A levels I spoke to the careers advisor that the city council sent around...he suggested I became a post man. I know it was Thatchers Britain but...

Ended up with a "proper job" with an insurance company, then worked for myself and retired at 55

Berlinlover · 25/01/2025 23:10

Lovely story!

Did you have it written in a diary that it was Feb 1983 as if you didn’t you must have an amazing memory!

Also that was quite a short crush ( compared to some of mine) if it just lasted the month of February😊

Were your parents dead when you got together?

I had just started secondary school and was dreaming about marrying George Michael. My periods had just started. I’m really surprised that you had a crush on someone older when you were primary age.

No that can’t be right, I was going to marry George Michael ( or Michael J Fox to be fair). I was genuinely amazed when I found out GM was gay. Clearly have no gaydar!

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 25/01/2025 23:47

I love your story, OP! Long may you stay happy together.

In Feb 83 I was working abroad, planning to continue travelling the world. Always restless until I met my now DH and I discovered this is where I want to stay. We’ve been happily settled now for over 20 years.

BashfulClam · 25/01/2025 23:52

I was three so was probably eating mud or something 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fuckle · 26/01/2025 00:40

So what were you doing in Feb 1983??!

I was mostly sitting up overnight waiting for Thoroughbred mares to foal. That was a long cold Winter. I drew the short straw being the only single person. My co-workers had families and children so it was me doing 3 or 4 night shifts a week in the cold tack room, with a gas fire, phone at hand in case we needed to call the vet. The Story Of The Blues.

Spring came. It got warmer. The mares and foals pranced and showed off on the warm Spring grass. It rained a lot and the flooded valley below looked as if the tide had come all the way up to Milborne Port. We came to work, we left. We partied, we had fun. We were young. This is how it was. A jigsaw, but for me a piece was missing.

One sunny tranquil morning in May, I came down the track and into the yard. There she was, in worn jeans, a loose navy t-shirt, the vision of perfection, leaning on the wall, an old rusty bike in hand, waiting. Her dark hair falling away naturally with a fringe above her dark eyes, I loved her instantly. My European Female was here. My heart beats must be heard across the valley.

How does this happen? How do we go from this lonely hope to being inside the middle of the entire world together, entwined with bonds forged after just a few days together? It was hot. Every day was hot. Every night was hot. We felt it, smelled it, tasted it. Long Hot Summer. We were inside it and it was to last forever. We extended it with plans and journeys and expeditions. We were having a beach house with parrots in the trees. It was Gold.

We sat on top of the hay in September and as the sun slipped below the horizon, I slipped a ring on her finger.

There was no happy ending. Life is fragile and we are fragile. It turned back to cold in February 1984. And yet still life goes on. It has to.

Aww 🥰 My brother had a crush on a girl in his badminton club in the 80s. Many years later (after their own failed marriages) they met up and got married last year 😍

Aw fabulous ! ❤️

Oh yes! Full of woe is actually quite fitting. I’m the worlds biggest pessimist 😔

Pushmepullu · 26/01/2025 05:08

Was celebrating my 21st. Got engaged to the man I started dating 6 weeks previously. Been married for 40 years.

Congratulation on your happy ending 🌹
Feb 1983 I was preparing to take my cse's exams! They're not even called that now 🤣

I was taking O Levels.

OP So glad you are happy.

LordJohnGrey · 26/01/2025 06:35

Getting divorced from a violent man and trying to get my life together again for myself and my DS.

WinterFrog · 26/01/2025 06:54

Lovely story! Dreams do come true! 💕
1983 was my O Level year so I'd probably just done my mocks. I still have the desk I did my homework on. I had posters of Duran Duran, David Essex and Nik Kershaw up, alongside slightly more battered ones with horses on them all round my bedroom.
I was still dreaming of being a professional show jumper then. And getting a boyfriend 😂 Didn't become a show jumper, nor did I get a boyfriend for quite some time after that. Ten years later I was married with two small children! Ten years after that I got my first pony 🦄
I'm enjoying this thread!

Frontroomroomjungle · 26/01/2025 07:00

What a lovely story OP!

February 1983 I was a newborn so some variation on eating/sleeping/filling nappies.

HoraceCope · 26/01/2025 07:01

happy for you @SweetAndSensual

i was probably 6 months into a 2 year relationship with a boy , he was our lodger! i was 16
my dm threw him out but we carried on our relationship.
i dont have many memories of it oddly, i would like to find out what happened in his life but i think he left the area. he had a difficult upbringing, hence being our lodger.

Squirrelsnut · 26/01/2025 07:31

Rather ironically, I had a crush on Limahl. He was my first poster on my bedroom wall.

ClassicStripe · 26/01/2025 07:33

I don’t really get why you are posting this if you’ve been together since 1991?!
