To think that Rachel Reeves really ought to practice what she preaches?

AIBU reasonable to think that Reeves is being somewhat hypocritical in saying we can learn from Trump’s positivity, and is challenging people to be more positive on the UK’s strengths?

I say that not because she’s drawing on Trump as a positive role model, which is another debate all together, but because of the sheer gall involved in challenging others to be positive when she and the government have been relentlessly downbeat about the UK’s situation since they took power.

Are they beginning to learn what proper leadership is about…? Let’s hope so.

Rachel from accounts stumbled into the job by accident. She’s incompetent and has tanked the economy.

Borrowing is through the roof, gilt yields have gone haywire, economic output is worse than ever, growth is non existent, the country is likely in recession when growth figures are revised, unemployment is up, taxes are higher than ever, inflation is going to start edging up. Just to pour some petrol on the bin fire this government has started, highest rate taxpayers are leaving the country in their tens of thousands.

All of this since Labour took over. They took a bad situation and make it unimaginably worse.

And now Two Tier, Rachel from
accounts and Lamey are dying to lick Trump’s boots, because they trashed him for years. He is in power, in charge of the country that makes 25% of global economy. This shower of idiot are now buzzing around him like flies, begging for forgiveness and trying to get in his good books. It would be funny if it were so tragic to watch Trump humiliate this government.

OMG she did not stumble into the job by accident, she is highly accomplished and respected by politicians on either side of the House. She has been handed a binfire. Step 1 was putting it out. Step 2 building back

Suzuki76 · 26/01/2025 07:57

Please can we stop calling her fucking Rachel from Accounts on a forum full of women. It is unimaginably misogynistic.

ExtraOnions · 26/01/2025 07:58

She hasn’t “tanked the economy” regardless of how many times you say it.

EasternStandard · 26/01/2025 08:01

Yanbu but she’s peddling hard

Stalling growth is her budget and each week it’s the attempt for a new headline about growth, whether it’s China or blaming others

OMG you actually did report me and get me deleted for having a different opinion to you!!

FFS. The extreme right really is trying to silence the dissenters!

If you go on about ‘bots’ Mnhq will delete, suspend or maybe ban. So feel free and see what they do

Is that you, Rachel?

nfkl · 26/01/2025 08:13

38% of the population wants this government out ASAP (which is more than the % of pop that put them in power) and here on MN it’s called being a bot.

Lol! Btw I think the gloomy messaging and NICs increase were mistakes but she can hopefully fix them and it sounds like she is trying to do that. To agree with a past poster, call out her mistakes by all means PLEASE stop calling her ‘Rachel from accounts’!! Did we give Kwasi after mini budget or George O after pasty tax a patronising nickname! I didn’t think so! And even if she did work in accounts it’s more real-world financial experience than those two ever had!

That might well be true but accusing RR of being a Trump supporter on the basis of her saying we should adopt some of his positivity about his own country is a bit if a stretch.
I am no Rachel Reeves (or Labour) fan but this is just silly.
As is the Rachel from Accounts moniker, which was slightly amusing the first time I heard it but just tired now. Not misogynistic though - politicians both male and female and left and right have always been called names.

The Times has come under considerable scrutiny recently for a seeming policy of publishing articles with Clickbait headlines , normally a DM/ Telegraph ploy, where the substance of the headline can only generally be found in the final paragraphs . Usually the headline finds only a glancing match to the content or actuality. They started this game during Covid and it has accelerated under new leadership. The headlines are rarely written by the journalist.

As others have said, what she actually said about Trump was diplomatically brief.

lljkk · 26/01/2025 09:04

I like Reeves a lot & don't see her as only negative about UK prospects. I see her as being honest about a challenging situation. The media will have quoted her selectively, too, because they can't quote every nuance, the previous speeches will also have had very positive narrative about Britain having the resilience to overcome challenges.

Willoo · 26/01/2025 09:08

Scautish · 25/01/2025 23:00

Well yes I’m going to blame the party that has been in power for 96% of the time since 2010

or do you think that all our woes have just arisen since Labour got in 6months ago??

i really don’t believe that you believe that. As one would have to be profoundly stupid to think that.

own the shit the tories have created and recognise it is going to take years for this country to recover.

No it won’t but it won’t stop Labour from blaming them for everything. It’s pathetic.

Poll results in the papers today.

It’s another stupid thing she said because this government has ZERO political acumen (on top of very poor policies).

They realise that their doom and gloom comms has alienated the electorate, they realise that Trump is making his supporters feel energised and optimistic. And politics are more about perception than results. So they try the same (clumsily and too late). It is like Musk saying a few days ago X needed more positive content.

They are lost and trying to clutch at any straw.

They were supposed to lead a nation into finding new enthusiasm to fix things after 14y of omni shambles. They had 14 years to think about what they would do. I was sincerely believing KS had done his homework and was coming with a slew of ideas good for the nation, that he would hit the ground running.

Even when there’s no money, there a lot of things you can do to show you have a vision. Also, when you get to power, you become PM for the whole country, even the ones who didn’t vote for you.

What did we get?
“Tories this and that” (as if it was a surprise? Wtf were they doing in opposition to be so clueless???) ad infinitum
Ideological payback moves (Rwanda, reaction to riots, VAT on private schools, raping gangs national enquiry, etc.)
Self-destructive moves (freebies, Tulip, WASPI, WFA, etc.)
Shitloads of promises, milestones, key points, quangos = don’t know what else to do

They just not good enough. After 14y of opposition where they should have prepared, it’s very disappointing.

And because of all their disastrous PR moves, they have gone over the red line in terms of public perception. They have lost the majority of the British electorate and there’s no comeback. Even if they find 500 trillions or split the atom.

NapoliFrapoli · 26/01/2025 09:24

It would be profoundly stupid to think that the situation RR is facing has been purely created by the previous government. There are external factors too though you don’t allude to them @Scautish.

Cattreesea · 26/01/2025 09:27

I voted Labour and I find her appalling.

It is hard for us to be positive about anything when we thought we elected a competent, fairer government but we got a chancellor who is making one mistake after another and affecting the economy for the worse.

She targeted pensioners, small businesses, farmers and the disabled rather than correctly taxing non-doms (she is watering down the promises they made on this), big corporates and sorting out profiteering energy companies.

I really don't think she is up to the job and Starmer needs to put someone new in place.

I did not vote for them to have the Tory 2.0 in power with even less of a clue when it comes to the economy and how to support the vulnerable.

So no, I am not positive, I am angry...

If anything she is the one who killed any hope and positivity people had after the election by constantly talking gloom and doom and sucking whatever life was left in the economy.

Don't know if Kwarteng had a nickname because he wasn't in position long enough but surely people haven't forgotten about Rachel from customer service's political influence, mentor and identical total omnishambles, the rightly named Gidiot.

You’re right, she’s actually ‘Rachel from complaints’. Perhaps she would have been marginally less disastrous if she had been from accounts.

I agree with all of this.
I did not vote for Labour though so I was kind of expecting things not to ge as rosy as many thought they would be, but even I am surprised at how terrible they are proving to be.
Still quite amusing watching die-hard Labour fans justifying every disaster with 'they are not as bad as the Tories' though 😂
And pretending that they would have 100% been absolutely fine with the Tories abolishing WFP, going back on WASPI women and sucking up freebies 😂😂

Creating a false CV isn't remotely funny. Neither is Reeves' economic incompetence.
