Sure this is about the 95th million thread on this subject but, went into Boots today and it was £8 for a bottle of L’Oreal Elvive.

£7 for a medium sized box of Lindt Balls in WR.

WTAF?!

The price of chocolate is going to go up further. I am a chocolatier and the wholesale price has more than trebled in the last 2 years due to climate change causing poor harvests and transport costs rising massively since covid.
Most of the big boys buy their raw ingredients years ahead so they have been able to absorb the price rises but they are now starting to bite and will get worse as the latest harvest was also very poor.

Can we swap jobs?

I was in Boots yesterday and saw eye make up remover for £7.99 and was genuinely like WTF. It reminded me of when I was in America and noticed thinks that are about £3 here were $8 there.

InDogweRust · 25/01/2025 13:24

Prices on a lot of things like clothes, chocolate, toys etc were suppressed for long time in western countries because these things were produced by exploited people treated appallingly and paid poverty wages in the third world.

Your first mistake was going to boots to be fair…

Boots is a great place

I tend to buy things on Amazon in bulk as cheaper

We shouldn't be encouraging Amazon & then complain about prices elsewhere

iamnotalemon · 25/01/2025 13:34

@luckylavender

I'll buy where it's cheaper. As much as I'd love to 'support local', if it's cheaper on Amazon, that's where I'll be buying.

TheHousemaid · 25/01/2025 13:49

@iamnotalemon unfortunately live in the CI so we don’t have Aldi, Lidl etc! But I take your point

I saw milkshake powder going for £5.50 the other day. Absolutely shocking and I’m amazed that anyone with an ounce of sense would be willing to pay so much.

MrsPeregrine · 25/01/2025 13:53

If something is a rip-off, don’t buy it. They’ll soon learn if sales drastically drop.

TheHousemaid · 25/01/2025 13:54

Just ordered a 700ml bottle off Amazon for less than £4.

also, whoever mentioned eye makeup remover upthread, I use Simple Miscellar water - massive bottles on sale at WR at minute which think is good value

luckylavender · 25/01/2025 13:56

@iamnotalemon - I understand that but remember it's cheaper because they don't pay tax

80smonster · 25/01/2025 14:24

Olive oil? You basically have to call your mortgage broker from the aisle, to see if you can remortgage your house to cover the cost. I’m trying to be way less sloshy with the bottles I buy…

ohtowinthelottery · 25/01/2025 14:33

Definitely go to Home Bargains or B&M for shampoo.

AuraBora · 25/01/2025 14:40

Oh goodness I might have to give up chocolate! I noticed a pack of buttons M&S had gone up to £3 the other say!
Yes yes I know M&S isnt the cheapest but it's still expensive compared to what it was in the same.place a year ago!
But it's just everything... really watching what I buy so closely now.

Which shop is WR?!

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 25/01/2025 14:45

The shops don’t understand that when they price individual things too much we can’t afford everything else

They don't care either. The things that some consumers may think are essentials, such as coffee, or chocolate, will obviously not be thought of the same way, by other people. I could quite easily live without those things, but potatoes, and bread, or eggs, and fresh fish, would be extremely hard to have to forgo, if prices were to go to unimaginable levels.

SnappyGreyLemur · 25/01/2025 15:02

My husband saw a Toblerone in the Co-op for over £7 today.

What is Cl?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/01/2025 15:09

They only price like that because people pay it. If no one did they’d have to lower their prices.

Shop around! I have regular products I buy - hair products etc - but I only buy from whoever has them on special offer. Unless I’m really pushed for time/convenience, I have no loyalty for shops. A couple of minutes of Googling can save a fortune.

firstbabyfirsttimemum · 25/01/2025 15:11

100%. Tricky when on maternity pay too

IKnowAristotle · 25/01/2025 15:13

It must have been a giant bag of mini eggs for £15 surely?

Oh right… yeah I’m not in the UK so it’s not something that Im familiar with

Normallynumb · 25/01/2025 15:35

Superdrug beats boots hands down.. for everything including customer service!
They usually have offers and their own brands are excellent. They do their own versions of many things too
Shampoo. I use matrix which I buy from somewhere like All beauty/ notino
I actually hate boots A staff member was very rude to me and I've never stepped foot in there since
