AIBU to use the posh glasses

We recieved some lovely crystal glasses for our wedding 27 years ago. so have 12 of each tumblers, red wine glasses, white wine glasses, shot glasses etc. In that time we are down 1 wine glass and 1 shot glass.

Would we be unreasonable to start using them as almost everyday glasses.

We couldn't afford to replace - but who are we keeping them for?

I'm just under 60, DH just over 60. I'm in the process of clearing out my parents house ready to sell. They still have a large amount of their wedding presents, but not to my or my sisters taste. We will be doing a mixture of eBay, charity and bin.

Why not just enjoy using what we have now...

Yes just use them.

OhWifey · 24/01/2025 20:25

Definitely. A dear friend once said to me...why would I keep anything for best? My family are my best so I should share these things with them.

StuffedFullOfFromage · 24/01/2025 20:26

Oh god, please use them! Life is too short. Enjoy the small things that make this shorty world more pleasurable!

Ilovemyshed · 24/01/2025 20:26

Just use them and enjoy them.

IoWfairy · 24/01/2025 20:27

I'm thinking the same. Shall we do it?!

KimberleyClark · 24/01/2025 20:27

Use and enjoy them. Life is too short to keep things “for best”.

wythamwoods · 24/01/2025 20:31

Use them. I had a conversation today with someone about using your best china as everyday, as you say, what are you saving them for.

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 24/01/2025 20:33

We have enjoyed them and use when friends come over and we have had large Christmas dinners etc when they have all been in use

You are all right, we will use them everyday - we always wash glass by hand (even every day stuff) so it's not a if it will create more work

OP posts:
SockQueen · 24/01/2025 20:33

The only reason I wouldn't is if they can't go in the dishwasher (if you would usually use one). If you are happy to handwash daily, crack on! That may not be the best choice of phrase though. ..

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 24/01/2025 20:37

IoWfairy - Join me and use yours as well

SockQueen - Glasses do not get cloudy when washed by hand, so that is a normal rule in this house, it's noticeable even on the cheap stuff

Use them, we've started to do the same. Wine tastes nicer in a nicer glass.

Wolfpa · 24/01/2025 20:40

Saving things for best means you rarely get to enjoy them. Get them out

Nikitaspearlearring · 24/01/2025 20:41

I think it's nice to keep some things for best, so long as you do actually use them occasionally. Could using them every day be a bit like wearing your ballgown to the supermarket? Nothing wrong with that, of course, except that if you got invited to a ball you'd be wearing your everyday dress and not something special. But maybe it wouldn't matter, if you felt special every day. Circular argument!

aCatCalledFawkes · 24/01/2025 20:42

I got divorced 14 years ago and used all the crystal we were given as wedding presents for wine or prosecco. Yes I broke glasses and I have nothing left but also they were all used and they sat there for years not being used. In there place I have been able to display ballet and Jiu Jitsu medals. So every silver lining.

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 24/01/2025 20:42

We have the silver cutlery service my parents were given for their wedding. Used and appreciated every day! (it was used for best ie Christmas mostly when I was a child). I find it very satisfying!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 24/01/2025 20:44

Definately use them, they have memories with them which (hopefully) bring a smile to your face every time you pick one up to use.

Ilovelowry · 24/01/2025 20:49

We use ours. Not every day, but every few weeks or when having a nice bottle of wine. Not because I worry about breaking them but because I utterly refuse to hand-wash anything and they have to go in the dishwasher.

And when our daily asda/IKEA pint glasses get cloudy and grotty I replace them.

I have horrors of my mum not washing the soap off glasses properly when I was growing up and never ever trust a hand washed glass or mug.

grumpytoddler1 · 24/01/2025 20:52

Use them, that is what they are FOR. They will be fulfilling their glassy purpose.Grin

Gassylady · 24/01/2025 20:57

Yes use them and enjoy. When I cleared out my mums house not only were there some of her things that had been kept for best but some of my nan’s stuff too. Linen tablecloths from the 1930’s still in their packaging! What a waste.
My wedding china is also our everyday china - good sturdy Denby. The crystal glasses were Christmas only when the kids were small but they are also now in the cupboard to use and enjoy!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/01/2025 20:59

I don't understand why you wouldn't. You don't need MN's permission!

Copperoliverbear · 24/01/2025 21:00

Use them x

CagneyNYPD1 · 24/01/2025 21:00

When my MIL died, I was given all her best and favourite crockery. I didn't store it away. I decided that it would be on display, on my kitchen dresser, for us to see and use every day. We still call them "Granny's plates and bowls". I think of her often when plating up, especially with a Sunday roast.

10 years on, not one single piece has broken despite having dc and ddog rampaging around the house.

So use the glasses. Every drink you take out of them will taste even better.

Renthorrorshow · 24/01/2025 21:09

Yes use them! I used to be terrible for keeping things for best (even duvet covers!) until DP started referring to me saving things for 'when the Queen comes to stay' and I realised how ridiculous I was being.

Femalefootyfan · 24/01/2025 21:22

We have wine glasses we were given for wedding presents and 1st anniversary presents that I keep ‘for best’, ridiculous really, we should use them instead of buying cheap everyday glasses. We’ve had the wedding and anniversary glasses for nigh on 37 bloody years, if we dropped dead next week, our dc will charity shop them, so we should use them,

Clingfilm · 24/01/2025 21:29

I did this, they gradually all got smashed but they'd been in a cupboard for 15 years and the people who gave them were long dead. The glasses had a good life in the end and yes wine tastes nicer in the posh glasses 😉.
