AIBU to use the posh glasses

We recieved some lovely crystal glasses for our wedding 27 years ago. so have 12 of each tumblers, red wine glasses, white wine glasses, shot glasses etc. In that time we are down 1 wine glass and 1 shot glass.

Would we be unreasonable to start using them as almost everyday glasses.

We couldn't afford to replace - but who are we keeping them for?

I'm just under 60, DH just over 60. I'm in the process of clearing out my parents house ready to sell. They still have a large amount of their wedding presents, but not to my or my sisters taste. We will be doing a mixture of eBay, charity and bin.

Why not just enjoy using what we have now...

100% use them.
Enjoy your lovely glasses!

We're retired and in our 60s now and recently sorted the cupboards out. So many lovely 'things for best' I'd forgotten about. We are using them now. Wedgewood dinner service, silver cutlery, crystal glasses etc.

Similar thread here, admittedly about using new things but it has the same sentiment - saving things for best!

I'll repeat what I said there - always choose the sparkles ✨️

Definitely. A dear friend once said to me...why would I keep anything for best? My family are my best so I should share these things with them.

Love it and 100% agree.

use them. There was a great piece in the New York Times about this recently. It opened with this:

Joan Didion once said that she used her “good” silver every day, because “every day is all there is.”

daliesque · 24/01/2025 21:54

Life is too short to save things for best. If you love them, use them. If you don't live them, put on eBay and ones you do love.

RobertaFirmino · 24/01/2025 21:59

Life is short and can end in a split second. Use the glasses and treat every single day as 'best'.

StripyHorse · 24/01/2025 22:00

There is no point in them just sitting in a cupboard - use them.

I take the middle ground with my 'good' wine glasses, I use them regularly (weekly) and I think I have only lost 1 in over 20 years. Typically, I use them when we are having wine with a meal. We have cheap tumblers which we use for every day, which do get dumped in the dishwasher. We also have cheap wine glasses which I tend to use if I am drinking wine away from the table.

I’m drinking presecco right now out of my champagne flute I received as a wedding gift I always enjoy using pretty things for regular life and all my crystal in particular as it outlasted my marriage 😉

User12385359 · 24/01/2025 22:05

Absolutely use them. I have a lovely set of 4 cut glass champagne flutes my brother bought us as a wedding gift. I know they were £50 as I’d wanted them for ages and couldn’t justify the cost, this was back in 2013. I use those glasses every time I drink fizz, even if it is only Aldi Prosecco. Life’s too short not to use your nicest things.

suburburban · 24/01/2025 22:22

I broke a wine glass last week and was so glad it wasn't my best ones

However I did use some Royal doulton China but I still handwash it

lazyarse123 · 24/01/2025 22:23

We bought a fancy canteen of cutlery about 30 years ago and never used it, just cheap crap from Asda but we downsized 3 months ago and threw most of the cheap stuff out and now use it every day. I often wonder what exactly we were saving it for.

AffableApple · 24/01/2025 22:26

I can't take my own advice, but use them!

(Also if the company is still going, or if you don't mind a rummage in an antique shop or several, you can usually source replacements.)

AgreeableDragon · 25/01/2025 06:30

Use them, along with anything else you're keep for"best".
Life is short, enjoy each day to the full.

MotorwayDiva · 25/01/2025 06:51

Posh comes out for Sunday lunch and special occasions, so used at least weekly. I was gifted someone's best set, and they were proud it has only been used at Christmas previously.
Mu mums uses best crockery in Sunday, but best glasses only special occasions.
