To believe that prisoners serving life sentences shouldn’t have access to luxuries like TV or gym equipment?

Why should taxpayers fund entertainment for people who’ve committed heinous crimes?

I'm going to start a daily list to try to keep track of the ultra-conservative/far right threads started. So far, in the last 48 hours we have had threads started to recommend:

  1. Mandatory euthanasia for sick old people
  2. Mandatory vasectomies for sex offenders
  3. Mandatory sterilisation for bad mothers, and now
  4. No luxuries for prisoners.

Is this a concerted campaign or a coincidence?

BadLad · 22/01/2025 22:27

This OP is like Alan Partridge when he is worrying about going to prison. His girlfriend pipes up “You always say prison is like holiday camp”. Alan moans “I was making a point about something else.”

Maddy70 · 22/01/2025 22:28

Disagree. The cost of those things far outweighs the problems and costs associated with prison life. These are humans no matter what life had left them to

PatchworkElmer · 22/01/2025 22:28

I think this depends on what you think prison should be for? I’d like to think that for most inmates there’s a chance of rehabilitation, and their rejoining and contributing to society. I don’t think that by removing literally everything, this would be possible.

bombastix · 22/01/2025 22:29

Banning tv won't make the prison any better. It probably stands to make the staff's life worse.

Prison is where lifers and others throw pots of piss over the wardens for fun.

I imagine there needs to be some structure to their day, whether it’s work, education, or rehabilitation programs. My issue is more with luxuries like TV or gym equipment - things that seem more like privileges than necessities. Shouldn’t the focus be on accountability and personal development rather than comfort?

Physical activity isn't a luxury. And given that they can't go for walks, prisons need to provide facilities for exercise. And yes, for the custody officers' sake, the inmates' stress and frustration needs to be burned off safely.

I just assume the Conservatives are doing policy research

Stare at wall, atrophy or break rocks for all I care with the really awful criminals as the people they killed don't get any enjoyment out of life and I doubt their families get much either.

The sub-postmasters sent to prison over the Horizon scandal also lived in those same conditions.

I’m amazed at how sympathetic most posters seem to be with prisoners serving long sentences for brutal crimes. If someone had raped and murdered my toddler I’d want the rest of their life to be as shit as possible. Maybe that makes me a bad person.

Of course it doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a normal person.

I'd want them torn limb from limb but I recognise that in that situation I would not be the appropriate person to be deciding on a punishment, and that actually it's good we don't hang, draw, and quarter people anymore.

Being locked up for years is miserable, and if allowing a few pretty minor privileges make life a bit easier for the people doing the dangerous and thankless task of guarding the prisons, then I think that's a reasonable thing to do.

tilypu · 22/01/2025 22:31

Crikey op, think of the potential consequences for the staff.

It doesn't bear thinking about.

Yabu.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 22/01/2025 22:32

Prisoners have a horrible time, sometimes in tiny cells for 23 hours a day eating poor quality food on their bunks. The occasional trip to the gym or access to TV is hardly a luxury.

KTheGrey · 22/01/2025 22:33

Ponoka7 · 22/01/2025 20:52

So what do they do all day?

Work? Study? Get rehabilitated? Lots of outdoor exercise doing gardening etc. and literacy and numeracy practice. I believe the prison population is generally low in literacy skills, and apparently various educational barriers are over represented.

What do you propose they do all day? Sit and reflect on their sentence?

To be honest if they are watching the One Show and running 30k on a treadmill that would only make my sentence worse!!!

bombastix · 22/01/2025 22:34

You realise all these fancy smancy classes and rehabilitation cost money.

Nobody wants to spend on prison. TV is cheap

RaininSummer · 22/01/2025 22:35

XenoBitch · 22/01/2025 22:31

Well that is awful as even if they had been guilty, they didn't kill anybody.

julesagain · 22/01/2025 22:37

You really have no idea do you? And don't worry, the TV is a privilege and you have to pay for it out of your wages.

bombastix · 22/01/2025 22:37

So are we saying women who kill their abusive husbands should not get tv? Or is it the undeserving murderers?

XenoBitch · 22/01/2025 22:38

RaininSummer · 22/01/2025 22:35

Still in prison though.

Good luck finding the taxpayers money and the very many teachers and therapists to make that work for all the 95,000 people in prison in the UK today.

Did you think that the postmasters and mistresses were given different treatment from the murderers? Better bedrooms? Special privileges? Better food?

Moier · 22/01/2025 22:43

My ex got life for attempted murder on me. 36 years ago.( Thrown under a moving bus)

At the beginning l knew which prison he was in... was kept informed about things.. as years went on ...he went to the gym.
Studied for a degree.
Had a TV... extra time out of his cell and extra visits
Went to Church ( he was an atheist).

Then l started my therapy a year later ( l was in a coma .. left severely disabled).. l asked not to be told anything unless he was up for parole.
Apparently he won't ever be released and that's all l need to know.
I hope he dies a painful death.

bridgetreilly · 22/01/2025 22:43

When you’ve worked in a prison, come back and tell whether they are luxuries. It is important for everyone that prisons are safe for prison staff, to prevent mass rioting and escapes, and for other prisoners. Things which help to make that easier are not luxuries. The reality is that most prisoners, including those on life sentences, will be released one day. It’s in all our interests to ensure that prison does not turn everyone into a monster.

No. What makes you think that. I was just saying that I wouldn't care if murderers say all day rotting in cells with no entertainment or gym but I also don't think they should be released so no need to rehabilitate them.

RandomButtons · 22/01/2025 22:44

Nope, can’t get upset about inmates having access to something very cheap that will help stop them going totally nuts and being more dangerous to society when they are released.

OP most of MN is hard left. They would scrap prison altogether if they could.

After all, it’s the scummy victims who are at fault for complaining about criminals. So unkind and right wing to want to see people punished for crime.

What's hard left about being concerned about the levels of safety in prisons, particularly for staff?
