I understand where you're coming from OP. There's so much about the rhetoric coming from Trump and his cronies about being chosen as a saviour that's directly adjacent to one particular early 20th century leader that watching the inauguration and following speeches left me feeling really queasy.
Religion and politics are a scary mix. If you really want to delve into it from a US perspective there is an interesting two part documentary exploring the impact of evangelical Christian thought on policy called "Praying for Armageddon". It's by Al Jazeera. Some quite influential religious people believe that the Gaza situation should be encouraged to play out in order to bring about the second coming of Christ.
It's easy to scoff and dismiss but if people have deranged beliefs, money, power and the ears of government all hell could break loose. Some people will do anything for money and power, so non-believers who are greedy and amoral will think nothing of claiming allegiance even if they don't truly believe if the price is right.
I think there is no limit to Trump's ego, and elevating himself to God-like status due to divine right doesn't sound far-fetched to me.
The Englush commentator for Sky's coverage of the inauguration said there was a distinct lack of any humility in the whole thing, and I got strong "world domination" vibes from the whole thing. With tech, and economic policy, a determined megalomaniac doesn't need to put military boots on foreign territory to conquer, and I think this is why he has surrounded himself with the mega rich and the tech bros.
I'm looking at the future with a huge amount of trepidation.
