Makes me want to punch a wall.
That is all.

For some reason, whenever someone uses the word 'narrative' I get the ick.

'Changing the narrative to suit their purpose'. Shudder.

Printedword · 21/01/2025 19:46

It's not very common in real life. Quite popular in here.

I wouldn't use it, I can't even sing words like that in songs.

Please remember that walls matter too.

IsThePopeCatholic · 21/01/2025 19:51

Its origins are military, according to wiki.

NoTouch · 21/01/2025 19:52

I'm not keen on "Makes me want to punch a wall", as it makes someone sound unhinged, but each to their own

BCBird · 21/01/2025 19:53

Heard it quite carefully lot at work.

WellsAndThistles · 21/01/2025 19:55

Never heard anyone threatening to punch a wall? Is that a new MN one?

Rocksaltrita · 21/01/2025 19:55

I like it. It has military origins about defending a vantage point at whatever cost (soldiers’ lives). I find it odd that people think it’s a MN phrase. It’s a very commonly used expression!

I haven't seen it anywhere except Mumsnet.

I absolutely loathe it,

Any variation of "host, hosted, hosting" is another one I can't stand.

What on earth is the hosting about?

Not a massive fan but it doesn’t bother me hugely. Much prefer ‘pick your battles wisely’ - sounds a bit warrior-like 👌

Exactly. Nothing to d with Christ.

I used this phrase the other day with my team to point out how petty everyone was being Grin

BeLilacSloth · 21/01/2025 20:45

Hate it with a passion, along with ‘didn’t want to read and run.’

Cm19841 · 21/01/2025 20:46

It's so useful for reminding people to put things in perspective and prioritize. Much prefer it to "do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?"

I like "stay in your lane". Another under appreciated skill more people should master.

Assuming it’s because Jesus was crucified on a hill.

That's what I assumed, do we have any reason to believe this is a reference to the crucifixion specifically? I always assumed it was a generic battle site...

User09678 · 21/01/2025 21:02

I have reread the OP properly and actually I'd be fucking livid if someone told me I was over reacting about something. I initially read the phrase in a general sense - I say things are hills to die on. I would not be happy about being told what hills are worth dying on. So YANBU!

What's wrong with that?!

Just such an annoying, unnecessary phrase, if someone’s got something to say on a thread just say it!

Yes - I think Megan and Harry used it a lot. Therapy speak - it’s all awful.

It's usually said by people who have nothing to say but if it's an earnest plea for help - if I'm the first poster and a little time has gone by, I comment to bump the thread so someone can actually contribute properly. I feel too bad to just scroll on. Just trying to offer a little support.

Any other contect than the above then yes it would be weird and unnecessary

Therapy speak - yeah I agree with this. The word 'space' makes me cringe too if it's referring to anything other than parking or extra terrestrial

I always thought it was the Battle of Bosworth, although that doesn't make sense thinking about it, as Richard III did think it was a hill to die on!
