If you win the lottery tomorrow...

Would you quit work?
I've bought a ticket for the euro millions tomorrow. Yes, I know there's pretty much no chance of winning anything, but it's just a bit of fun.
If I were to win, I would work my notice, less annual leave, because I wouldn't want to dump anyone in it, but then I'd be gone.
I'm not bothered about "stuff" but I would love the security it would give me, dh and my children.

I’ve been off for a few months having surgery so I’d just not go back - my accrued holiday and sick note would cover notice period but I’d pop back on to treat a few people

MermaidMummy06 · 20/01/2025 21:17

Both DH & I would quit immediately. It's a company owned by a family member so we'd likely work for another few weeks (probably months for DH) until they could find & train replacements, just to not sour the family relationship. I'd love to just walk out, tbh! It's not a great job!

Then we'd move to a nicer house in a nicer area & travel every school holidays with the DC & stay in accommodation we want, rather than can just afford. Buy a nice NEW car. Eat out. Buy decent clothes, go to the gym or have hobbies.

Just the choices......

I’d be laying on a beach before anyone missed me. Delete the chat I’d never see or speak to any of them ever again.

I think that's brave. I'd love to do it.

Thelnebriati · 20/01/2025 21:17

I wouldn't burn any bridges until the money is actually in my bank account, but that's just me.

Powderblue1 · 20/01/2025 21:18

I love my job and would likely stay on as a consultant as wouldn't want to leave people in the lurch and my knowledge base is quite niche. But I'd be off like the clappers 😂

PlantDoctor · 20/01/2025 21:19

KarlaKK · 20/01/2025 20:58

I'd do the same - hand in my notice, work my notice period out and leave on good terms. Not sure what excuse I'd give for leaving as wouldn't want them to know I've won the lottery. I'd also move straight into a nice hotel and get the work doing on my house done while I'm not there before selling it and buying a nice detached house somewhere.

Put me down for this too :)

Cello60 · 20/01/2025 21:19

I’ve had such a crap embarrassing day at work today that if I won the lottery tomorrow. Id be sorely tempted to pretend I’d died and just not turn up.

Bung my neighbour a million quid to ring up and say sorry Cello sleepwalked out of an upstairs window last night.

Good point. How embarrassing if you went all guns blazing to quit with a big fanfare only to find some bizarre mix up or simply looking at the wrong numbers. That would be just my luck.

I'm thinking the Ritz in London or somewhere else posh for a few months while I house hunt :)

TicTac80 · 20/01/2025 21:24

Hmmm, tough one. I love my job (95% of the time!), and I love the people I work with. My DC are still at school, so I'd want to do something to occupy my time. When they're older/grown up, I'd like to volunteer with MSF (if I won the lottery!!).

If I won tomorrow night's jackpot, I'd:
-take a little time to get things straight in my head. Speak to a financial advisor and a lawyer.

-buy a house locally (so DC can continue at their schools). I'd like a house with more space: more bathrooms, a couple of spare rooms so people can stay over comfortably. Also a nice big kitchen/diner and a utility room and pantry. Nice big garden (also properly cat-proofed to stop my cats escaping it!). Outhouse/double garage. Oh and enough space for a catio for my lovely cats. Sure, a heated indoor pool would be lovely, along with a gym (but not important). I'd make sure the house is future-proofed for myself. I've seen some lovely places around the £1-2million mark.

-put some money away for the kids (but do it so it's protected for them). I'd do that on the sly too, as I'd expect them to study and work so they understand and respect the value of a day's work.

-get a smallish camper van. I'd buy a car too.

-I'd maybe go part time with work. And I'd do more studying.

-help family and close friends out on the sly.

-be able to take the DC on overseas holidays, and be able to take the school hols off as I'd request it as unpaid leave.

Same. I have that all planned out. I'll have to get my son to verify I've won then wait for the money to turn up in my account then it is all systems go. I'm not sure what the quality of my work will be like while I work my notice out 😆

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2025 21:26

I'd pay off my mortgage. Love my job so would carry on with that.

KarlaKK · 20/01/2025 21:28

I'm sure it'll be hard work in some ways. New house to buy, furniture to buy as my crappy old stuff will look out of place. Clothes to buy as I'm a scruff bag which won't do while I'm house hunting for million pound houses or staying at the Ritz in the interim. I'll have to get my hair done as have been cutting and colouring it myself. I'll have to watch my weight as I'll be eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner at nice places. So much to think about.

TaggieO · 20/01/2025 21:29

No, but I’d go part time.

GellerYeller · 20/01/2025 21:31

In my old job we used to joke that in a lottery win situation, we would turn up and have real fun saying no to all sorts of pointless requests, for a good couple of weeks at least. If anyone was difficult or rude, my boss would announce they were on her ‘lottery list’.

NotMilanese · 20/01/2025 21:37

I wouldn't quit, but I'd pay someone else to do the hard/boring bits and just enjoy the parts I like!

NeedToChangeName · 20/01/2025 21:38

I love my job, so I wouldn't want to leave

But I'd buy my neighbours house, to extend my own

Jennyathemall · 20/01/2025 21:39

Yes absolutely. Too much else in this life you can be doing with your time.

StarDolphins · 20/01/2025 21:41

I would quit work immediately. I would keep enough money to give me an interest wage and I would give the rest straight to charity.

Itsallgonesideways · 20/01/2025 22:00

I'd still work but switch to working term time only so I've got time to plan what to do next.

Top of my list is to pay for my best mates divorce, her husband is an arse but she can't afford to split. So paying for a divorce would help her enormously.

Then I'd pay off the mortgage and buy the kids and my siblings a house each in trust and a holiday. Beyond that I'm not sure but definitely would like to go back to university to do a masters. So can afford to do this part time and travelling round the world.

HereForTheAnimals · 20/01/2025 22:12

If I won 75 million on the euromillions then I would quit my job, but I think that's because I'd move to a different country. However, I do love my job. It is varied and I have a lot of autonomy. So if I won 2 million on the national lotto, I'd probably just go down to 3 days as opposed to 5. I think I would definitely need some formal routine otherwise I'd probably drink myself to death in 6 months living an hedonistic lifestyle.

Pythonesque · 20/01/2025 22:16

I'd be employing people to organise my schedule and do my admin, but would want to keep teaching (private music lessons). Might follow my dream of setting up a dedicated music "school" ie somewhere with rooms available to other private teachers, a performance space and so on.

Until recently I think DH would have also not quit his job but he seems to be getting more resigned to the annoying things never improving. I could see him offering to continue very part-time just the best bits.

ohat · 20/01/2025 22:20

I’d work my notice but then I’d be gone without a doubt.

PitchOver · 20/01/2025 22:21

Oh fuck working my notice period. I'd be gone like the wind.

Soonenough · 20/01/2025 22:24

I would buy a plot of land and build my dream house and include lifts , wet rooms and medical unit for my old age . Then I 'd pay the Ex to fuck off out of the country so I 'd never have to see him again . Then travel in style. Give to my chosen charity . Help out friends and family according to their needs.
