I smell badly- updated post

Hi! I posted on here ages ago (I annoyingly can’t find the post and have namechanged since then) but basically it was about how I smelled badly of BO no matter what deodorant/shower gel/soap/products I used, no matter how often I showered and no matter how regularly I replaced my clothes.

just wanted to post an update in case anyone is about and remembers it… I found something that works! good old fashioned liquid roll on dove deodorant! I had tried most types of deoderant already and nothing seemed to work so I sort of stuck with the cream deodorant sticks (eg the Mitchum or dove sticks) but I realise how they were the problem

I think when I tried other deodorants I didn’t give them long enough and possibly still had traces of the cream stick on me (even after I showered) and that’s maybe why I thought nothing was helping.

I decided to give liquid roll on a go for a few days as I was unable to get the normal sticks in the shop and bloody hell the difference was insane. For the last week or so I haven’t smelled of BO once and I realise now that the cream sticks were the issue all along

For context- I showered last night before bed and used the roll on before bed and got up early this morning and didn’t shower- it’s now nearly 6pm and I still don’t smell at all. Previously I smelled of BO after a few hours and it was so bad other people were noticing it. I got my friends to smell me the other day and they said I smelled so, so much better and not of BO

random post I know but just thought I’d post in case anyone remembers because received so many amazing comments with advice and I’m so grateful for it all. I could genuinely burst into tears with happiness that it’s fixed I’m so happy because it was honestly ruining my life!

Glad you found something that works. I got a lot sweatier-feeling in perimenopause and have found Fussy deodorant (which is one with reusable packaging) has worked really well for me. Took me through a phase of job interviews, where I'd normally sweat a lot, and kept things nice and dry.

So you weren't washing your armpits properly .
id recommend exfoliating gloves or African net sponge to really get into the pits. Normal body puff thing does nothing and I still smell of bo. You really need to scrub your armpits to get all the gunk out.

I had tried that already! I used everything you could possibly think of over the years and had no success - one night I literally scrubbed my pits with bleach and smelled fine at first then awful a few hours later- it was the deodorant wasn’t working for me

I guess it’s possible maybe hormone changes or something else meant that the roll on didn’t work before? I think I probably just didn’t try it for long enough and it still smelled because of the cream stick stuff. That seemed to just mix with my sweat and create an awful smell. I guess it’s individual though so what works for one person won’t work for others! Honestly no clue but I’m just so relieved to have found a solution!!!

thank you so much for all the nice comments🥹❤️

I actually feel like I can do things like go to the gym, makes plans after work, wear tight fitted clothing and just generally be normal again! It’s such a weight off my shoulders!

thanks again 😊

I remember you op. Or at least I think it was you. In part because perimenopause has given me bo. After trolling mumsnet I now mostly use Shield déodorant soap which works quite well. I then used Nivea spray or mitchum roll on. Will add Dove roll on to my répertoire. Rather use alternatie to Nivea spray which I am not sure is effective. Which Dove if I may ask?

I agree with this. The only thing that properly shifts under arm deodorant or antiperspirant is bar soap. I like the sainsburys own tea tree one

Yes, their Tea Tree one is really good.

Plus, I spray the underarms of all my clothing with a spray bottle full of distilled white vinegar. It gets rid of even the strongest residue of BO.

poemsandwine · 19/01/2025 22:33

So pleased for you!

sweetkitty · 19/01/2025 22:35

I’ve always double washed in the shower, Dove bar soap and a flannel for a good scrub then body wash for shaving and smelling “nice” then liquid roll-on I always found spray deodorants too cold.

SoMauveMonty · 19/01/2025 22:46

Pleased you got to the bottom of it, OP. I'd been using various stick deodorants with no problems then found last year they weren't working as well. In exasperation and on a tight budget i bought a Mum roll on (the pink flavour) and my god it's good. Cost about £1.20 in Savers. Yes, it takes a good 5 mins to dry off but it's worth it.

nc42025 · 19/01/2025 22:47

The cream ones really stick! I use bar soap and exfoliating gloves

I remember. So happy you found a solution x

Catpuss66 · 19/01/2025 23:11

Try clinisan body wash, gets rid of surface bacteria. Also check the smell isn’t trapped in your clothes. Might be worth seeing your GP there is some medical issues that can cause strongly smelling body odour.

Sunbeam01 · 19/01/2025 23:16

That's wonderful news!!

Thanks for the update :)

faithfulortratior · 19/01/2025 23:22

Glad to hear you've found something that works.

You probably don't need recommendations anymore but I will give mine anyway! I find that once you have a smell of BO on your armpits it can be hard to get off - for this, I absolutely swear by Hibiscrub - you can buy off Amazon. It's an antibacterial wash so properly gets rid of any smell without scrubbing, you leave it on for a minute.

CatsndtheBear · 19/01/2025 17:58

Do you use body wash instead of bar soap? I find that body washes don't remove the residue from cream stick anti-perspirants.

It could have been a build up over time!

Just thought I would mention this as I had to make the switch to bar soap :)
Glad you've found something that works.

I agree with this. I'd noticed for years that I was starting to smell a bit sweaty a few hours after showering (with shower gel), then realised that when I travel abroad, I don't and the difference is that I use bar soap abroad, as it's one less thing to put in my liquid bag at the airport. I now use Dove bar soap in the shower and smell fresh all day.

thrifty24 · 19/01/2025 23:26

Thanks for posting back and glad for you. What roll on did you buy? I alternate between cream and roll on stick so I am interested

rainbowlou · 19/01/2025 23:32

So glad you found something that works, must make such a difference for you.

Ive tried a couple of bar soaps and I felt cleaner but my already dry skin felt sooo dry!

Any recommendations for one that is also a bit moisturising too?

HallidayJones6779 · 19/01/2025 23:36

I remember your post! So pleased for you! Xxx

@MyPearlCrow

Thank you for the vag tips! Halo

blueshoes · 19/01/2025 23:49

OP, so nice to hear your update Flowers

Machachacha · 20/01/2025 00:04

Two things that I have heard of being good for skin all over the body.
One is to use Head and Shoulders as a body and face wash once a week and secondly that hand sanitizer is a great emergency BO killer.
Use on a wipe to freshen up and use your deodorant.
Handy if going out straight from work.
