First of all I want you to say that no one deserves to be scammed and I’m sorry this woman lost money but come on, how naive does someone have to be to fall for this?

The photos are so poor that surely anyone with eyes can see they’re fake. And since when did a A+ celebs mum contact randoms on SM?

To seriously think Brad Pitt can’t afford medical treatment and needs money sent to his American doctors Turkish bank account - words fail me.

French woman faces online mockery after being conned out of £700,000 by fake Brad Pitt

AI-generated selfies of the 61-year-old actor were sent to the victim via social media as part of a year-long scam to con her out of money.

Isn't there something where she thinks the real Brad Pitt should reimburse her?

That rings a bell, I'm sure I've read that too, he may be super rich but it's not his fault she did this.

In the Sweet Bobby podcast, she did seem to think the real Bobby was somehow responsible for having his identity stolen. And was aggrieved when he refused to meet her. Very strange logic.

bigkahunaburger · 19/01/2025 15:54

Did she? I've only just finished it and I don't remember that bit. I do drift off sometimes though tbf

This is like my mom who, when I explained that the texts from the "post office" saying "click here to pay for your parcel" (that she hadn't ordered) were scams, she said "you'd think the post office would be trustworthy, wouldn't you?"......yes mum, that's why they choose that name to scam you......she never understood it.

I get these sort of things now and again and I almost fell for one from 'FedEx'. I WAS expecting a parcel from the USA and it was only that my e-mail filter put in my spam folder that I took a second look.

That and there were spelling mistakes in it. It's one of the times that I really think that SPaG working knowledge is big help, to pick out the wrong-uns.

There ought to be enormous penalties for these scammers when they are caught. There used to be an e-mail address to send scam or suspected scam e-mails to, didn't there? I don't know if there still is one or if it's fallen over in the deluge of reports?

Right time, right thing... even savvy people can get caught out so it doesn't pay to be complacent thinking that we never would.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/01/2025 17:06

Just to add, I get e-mails purportedly from DeWalt telling me that I've won a drill thingie if I will only click this link... I'm the wrong person to fall for that as I wouldn't have an interest in a drill if it landed in my lap.

I'm hoping that a perfume scammer doesn't find me...

You can't speak for everyone with autism.

My brother has autism and he has never given money to anyone online.

I don't believe I said I was speaking for everyone who has autism, that would be a ridiculous concept.
I'm simply saying there are members of society who can be and are scammed, through no fault of their own, and giving an example of my own family....

DeedsNotDiddums · 19/01/2025 17:59

Please read the book Keanu Reeves Is Not In Love With You.
It's revelatory. And yes, some people aren't as clued in. I feel sorry for the victims. The sort of judgement is exactly the reason why these crimes go unreported.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/01/2025 18:02

And some people are very clued in but it gives them a false sense of security. People who are smug and convinced they will never fall for a scam - they might not fall for any of the current, well known scams. But get an AI version of someone you know well FaceTiming you and telling you they are in trouble and need your help...? Technology is only going to get better, and who knows where your own personal tipping point for falling for it will be.

GrannyRose15 · 19/01/2025 18:41

I think we have to be careful here. Yes it is unbelievable that people fall for these scams. But the fact is that many women do and as much as we can say “I wouldn’t be so stupid” we don’t actually know what it is about these women that makes them do what they do. They may be a certain type of person who is naive and stupid, or they may be women just like the rest of us who are lonely and vulnerable because of their particulsr circumstances. In truth we just don’t know whether there are circumstances in which we might be taken in by these a sophisticated scams.

The part that always intrigues me though is that women are prepared to continue a “relationship” for so long with a man they have never met.

fingerbobz · 19/01/2025 18:49

There's a tv series on Netflix called Love Rats

There's loads and loads of people who have been scammed

One woman thought she was in a relationship with Gerard Butler and transferred loads of money to him

How have you become an adult and not been aware that some people have learning difficulties. Do you think it’s kind or appropriate to mock them or is there another reason for this thread?

She's an interior designer so I would have thought learning difficulties would be unlikely.

dottiehens · 19/01/2025 23:43

3kgNET · 18/01/2025 11:28

If her learning difficulties are that severe perhaps she shouldn’t have easy access to £700,000?

This. But in reality she seems to have lost it and was probably ok before.

Hers were text messages.

I think you've missed the point I was making.

Why oh why are the majority of people who are scammed via 'romance scams' women? Are women just a lot more trusting gullible than men, or are there the same number of men this happens to who are are rightfully too embarrassed to admit it?

I mean, this one is ridiculous and pretty extreme, but there are endless stories of (normally older) women sending money to young men in other counties who 'love them very much and are going to marry them, and think they're very beautiful and the age gap isn't important' etc.... Nobody deserves to be fleeced out of their savings, but honestly, why are people still so naive?

I knew a man, two years after his wife died, was conned out of everything, not a romance scam but a cure for an illness/ disease. He was a very intelligent successful person. He topped himself.

I think you're right that maybe men don't admit it so much. An ex-boyfriend of mine gave money to a woman he met on a dating app - initially he called out that it sounded like a scam to get money, then "she" went with the approach of how it is a scam but she's being held against her will and has to raise money or she will be mistreated. He worried that might be true, so sent her money.

GreenYellowBrown · 20/01/2025 18:08

No need to be such a cow OP, the poor woman’s made a mistake and doesn’t need you making a thread about it. Haven’t you got anything better to do?

ArtTheClown · 20/01/2025 20:20

Tbf the women went public and was all over the news, I don't think one more thread about it is here nor there really.

Re: whoever suggested 'Keanu Reeves Is Not In Love With You' by Becky Holmes, thank you, she shines a light into romance fraud, and she's hilarious!

To 'Prince Andrew' who says 'I am glad you took your time to reply..I am a leader that combines unique leadership abilities with humility, simplicity and generosity that has earned me a place in the hearts of citizens'

Becky - 'can I ask you a question?'

PA: 'Yes'

Becky - 'What happens when the men are only half way up? They're neither up nor down I suppose'.

Sorry your highness, (may I call you Andrew?) I shouldn't be questioning your military tactics, I have a 2 for 1 voucher for Pizza Express, will you have dinner with me?'

The Cluedo Prince William conversation had me crying with laughter :)

The scammers specifically prey on people who are vulnerable. She was going thru a very aggressive and hostile divorce. She is an intelligent woman who did something unbelievably stupid. I feel for her.

I read she initiated proceedings to be with Brad. So maybe it was hostile with her ex calling her out, who knows! Her daughter tried to intervene but was ignored/dismissed. This lady was sucked in and was desperate for it all to be true.

Married to a millionaire, but with learning difficulties this severe? Seems unlikely.

plenty of people with questionable cognitive capacity marry rich men.
