Have I harmed my baby?

I've done something so stupid

I am 6 weeks pregnant and currently very unwell. I have never felt this ill before - very much cough/cold like symptoms however the headache + the leg aches/pain is just on another level

The only thing that has been helping the pain is soluable Solphadine (not the coedine one, the paracetamol + caffeine one)

I stupidly read somewhere that the caffeine in these tablets is 30g caffeine per tablet (so around 60g for two). However I stupidly stupidly didn't read the packet and it turns out it's over 60 PER TABLET.

I've had 6 in the last 12hrs so that puts my caffeine up to 360+, add in a can of coke and a tea to that within 24hrs my caffeine must be close to 500mg for the day 😢 that's more than double the recommended dose!

I've been in so much pain and feeling so ill that I didn't even check properly and now I'm panicking that I've increased my risk of miscarriage? I've had losses before and this baby is pretty much our last shot before we give up. Please tell me a one off caffeine increase is okay?

@TaggieO well I ate stuff they say U can't and my baby is fine 🤔🤔 so clearly not enough research tbh I have 4 kids and they all fine so it's bullshit the only thing I say U must take is folic acid cos I was taking it but kept being sick so wasn't in my system and I gave birth to girl 21weeks and she had spina bifda and that was lack of folic acid. Sadly she died so that's the only advice I could give

You don’t understand risk, at all.

edit to add, I didn’t read the end of your post, I was having a someone visceral reaction to the first half of it (I’m a statistician), but I’m genuinely very sorry for your loss. Xx

Theyre not professionals, they just read off a screen. They won't have a notion.

But it's fine.

I agree it’s entirely pointless phoning. But 111 can get a doctor to call you back and sometimes offer advice.

My son ate some of a toilet disc when he was a toddler and they were able to look it up and advise me on the phone. Not totally useless.

ItGhoul · 19/01/2025 12:17

This will have absolutely zero effect on your baby. You really, really don’t need to worry about this. It’s caffeine, not crack cocaine.

Balloonhearts · 19/01/2025 14:09

Oh good, just wanted to be sure. There isn't enough caffeine in that to cause damage from using it for one day.

FoxInTheForest · 19/01/2025 14:12

A not insignificant amount of women are still drinking alcohol at that stage not realising they are pregnant if it's a contraception failure.
The placenta isn't there yet so it's even less significant than later in the pregnancy. Stress will likely do more harm, just relax and be grateful you realised now rather than it happening later in pregnancy.

FoxInTheForest · 19/01/2025 14:13

Also, caffeine is actually given to premature babies as medication. It's not innately bad for them in the way alcohol is.

YankSplaining · 19/01/2025 14:17

Lord, no. I was taking four different psych meds (including Adderall) early in my pregnancy and my ten-year-old is a bright kid with no disabilities. (Except for a shortened finger that the hand specialist said was completely unrelated.)
