Have I harmed my baby?

I've done something so stupid

I am 6 weeks pregnant and currently very unwell. I have never felt this ill before - very much cough/cold like symptoms however the headache + the leg aches/pain is just on another level

The only thing that has been helping the pain is soluable Solphadine (not the coedine one, the paracetamol + caffeine one)

I stupidly read somewhere that the caffeine in these tablets is 30g caffeine per tablet (so around 60g for two). However I stupidly stupidly didn't read the packet and it turns out it's over 60 PER TABLET.

I've had 6 in the last 12hrs so that puts my caffeine up to 360+, add in a can of coke and a tea to that within 24hrs my caffeine must be close to 500mg for the day 😢 that's more than double the recommended dose!

I've been in so much pain and feeling so ill that I didn't even check properly and now I'm panicking that I've increased my risk of miscarriage? I've had losses before and this baby is pretty much our last shot before we give up. Please tell me a one off caffeine increase is okay?

I wouldn't be too worried about the caffeine. Just be careful with paracetamol though, you are very close to the limit in 12 hours. No more than 8 in 24 hours.

momofonex · 18/01/2025 08:33

I know, trying to save it now for when i desperately need it but wow the pain in my legs/muscles are unreal.

I drank fizzy pop through my pregnancy and my baby is 2weeks old and he's fine , they say all sorts U can't do this U can't do that ,wat U think they use to do in olding days. It's ridiculous

Michah89 · 18/01/2025 08:36

@momofonex when I was pregnant I got the same fever chills and I used stronger pain killers and he's fine honestly don't worry

They also had far higher rates of poor outcomes. Just because something is different to how it used to be doesn’t make it ridiculous.

fairytailcat · 18/01/2025 08:39

No. The baby is fine

But the caffeine wont do much for your anxiety

Michah89 · 18/01/2025 08:48

@TaggieO well I ate stuff they say U can't and my baby is fine 🤔🤔 so clearly not enough research tbh I have 4 kids and they all fine so it's bullshit the only thing I say U must take is folic acid cos I was taking it but kept being sick so wasn't in my system and I gave birth to girl 21weeks and she had spina bifda and that was lack of folic acid. Sadly she died so that's the only advice I could give

Can you not see how “I did it anyway and it was fine” doesn’t mean it’s ok? If I run across the motorway and I’m fine that doesn’t mean the next person isn’t going to get hit by a car.

Michah89 · 18/01/2025 09:00

@TaggieO that's just ridiculous 🤣 never heard so much crap in my life the comparison is not the same!!!!! 😂😂😂😂

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 18/01/2025 09:03

I probably have that amount of caffeine every day including through 2 pregnancies. I have a really high caffeine tolerance and can't really get through the day without it. At all my antenatal appointments I did say I was worried about it but they didn't seem too bothered, just made vague noises about me trying to cut down.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 18/01/2025 09:05

I've been taking the cold and flu tablets that have caffeine in, and i drink plenty of coffee and have the occasional energy drink. I've really cut down on the energy drinks though used to be 1 or 2 a day now 1 a week. Lots and lots of coffee though!!!

My point is that safety advice is safety advice for a reason. If you choose to ignore it and got lucky then that’s just it - luck. It doesn’t mean the next person. Will be as lucky. I’m sorry you don’t understand that.

Tandora · 18/01/2025 06:52

That will be totally fine, those things are just daily guidelines it really won’t hurt the pregnancy honestly xx
(People telling you to go to day assessment or call 111 are being silly)

Edited

Not silly at all, it’s better to have a quick phone call to be sure and calm your mind than take medical advice off of strangers on the internet. Pregnant women have enough to worry about already.

There’s no “medical advice” or assistance they can provide regarding having consumed a bit of caffeine at 6 weeks pregnant

Balloonhearts · 18/01/2025 12:31

That dose as one off isn't going to harm her, just don't make a habit of it. I'd be more concerned about the codeine in it, I was always told not to have codeine while pregnant.

Lol, yes they can. Advice entails anything ranging from “don’t worry about it” to “come in and get your stomach pumped” (obviously not going to happen, before you say it). A quick phone call for them to say “don’t worry” is likely be all that’s needed, but it’s better for someone medically trained to say there’s no concern than from internet ransoms with no discernible medical background.

I can guarantee the people on 111 prefer you to call so they can alleviate fears than the one time someone doesn’t call and the worst happens. Do what feels right for your situation, but don’t tell people they are being silly when they are just looking for reassurance on a medical issue, you don’t know if they’ve had previous losses that cause them to be more anxious about things like this. If something god forbid happened to the baby they could easily end up blaming themselves.

It wasn't the coedine one. Just the dissolvable ones that has paracetamol + caffeine x

There’s literally no advice they can give someone 6 weeks preg who’s consumed caffeine other than to say “it’s fine”. That’s it. That’s the option.

If it would make OP more comfortable/ give her reassurance she could by all means call/ text her midwife, who will also be unable to say anything other than “it’s fine”.
Calling 111 or seeking emergency care would be totally pointless.

Ttrwq · 18/01/2025 17:26

@momofonex think of the very many people who don’t even know they are pregnant until 8 plus weeks and have worse than caffeine! Don’t worry. So will be fine.

momofonex · 18/01/2025 17:29

Thank you so much for the reassurance. I'm not usually this anxious but I think feeling so ill combined with lack of sleep and the general anxiety in the first trimester has just sent me a tad insane 😁

As I said, some people need to hear “It’s fine” from a professional rather than internet randoms with no qualifications otherwise they could be stressing and worrying over nothing.

Additionally, you’re literally told to go through 111 if you can’t get hold of your midwife and have a concern.

Hipalong · 18/01/2025 18:06

TMGM · 18/01/2025 05:02

Call 111 they can alleviate your worries as they’re professionals (unlike most of us on here!). I doubt you’ve caused any harm but best to check and be fully reassured.

Theyre not professionals, they just read off a screen. They won't have a notion.

But it's fine.

Are you sure? Because I googled solphadine to check dosage and there wasn't one with no codeine. There was one with no caffeine but not one with no codeine.

Frlrlrubert · 18/01/2025 19:49

Solphadine Headache is paracetamol and caffeine only.

There was another thread on caffeine in pregnancy other day, honestly OP, you'll be fine.

The studies they set the dosage off, when you actually look into them, show that you'd make yourself physically ill with it before you harmed your baby.
