To wonder why women 65+ are all determined that coffee should be mouthscaldingly hot

My mum, her friends, all the ladies

A normal temp is "cold please bring another one"

Is this an era thing or will it come for me too?

It’s too early for this nonsense

Sahara123 · 17/01/2025 09:12

I’m 65 in a few months, I prefer my drinks at a normal non scalding temperature so unless I suddenly change overnight I can’t see how this is an age related thing….

MiddleParking · 17/01/2025 09:15

If I heard anyone speak like that to a friend/relative/member of hospitality staff I wouldn’t drink coffee with them, so it’s probably quite a self selecting sample.

Evaka · 17/01/2025 09:16

Hahahaha. My ex MIL was obsessed with the temp of coffee, food, the mugs/cups/plates they were in/on. To her it implied a standard of care. She was a good person but SO fussy about random shit.

Hanto · 17/01/2025 09:17

To whom are these people saying this?

I’m considerably younger than 65 and have always wanted tea or coffee very hot.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 17/01/2025 09:17

I used to volunteer at a toddler group, all the 'mums' drank tea made in a teapot about 5 mins before serving so a little cooler (but by no means cold, or even just warm!) but the 2 grandmas always wanted theirs made with freshly boiled water the second I was serving it. I always thought it was just a quirk and not age related, but thinking about it my grandmother is the same.

Maybe we're just not as strong as the generation before us 😂

Notgivenuphope · 17/01/2025 09:17

I am mid 30s and I expect a hot drink to be hot, especially if I have asked for it. I don’t mean burned, but I should not be able to put my finger in it or drink it straight down.

Mabelface · 17/01/2025 09:17

I like mine scalding hot in my fifties so it doesn't get cold too quickly

Dragonsandcats · 17/01/2025 09:18

My mum is the same, but always has been! Always warms plates at mealtimes too.

madamweb · 17/01/2025 09:18

Maybe you are just making the coffee weirdly cold? Maybe younger people are just too polite to say anything to you

I am several decades younger than 65 and I can't imagine wanting to drink lukewarm coffee

apostrophewoman · 17/01/2025 09:18

Oesophagus burning hot here too and I'm 54!

GreenYellowBrown · 17/01/2025 09:19

Your question should read… ‘why do Gen Z insist on lukewarm coffee’?

Disclaimer- Apologies if I’ve got the ‘Gen’ wrong, I’m apparently a millennial but I like my coffee HOT!!

Whatafabulousoaktree · 17/01/2025 09:19

There's no point at all in having it unless it's too hot to drink when I get it.

I'm 55.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 17/01/2025 09:19

Coffee should be hot, I always ask for extra hot at coffee shops, I want it still to be very warm/hot until I have my last mouthful

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/01/2025 09:19

I like my drinks hot but my parents like theirs molten. They must have mouths made of asbestos. Generally if in a cafe they specify extra hot and to steam the milk to boiling point, though, so we have little of the sending it back faff.

I think many trendy younger people accept coffee less than hot because of coffee snobbery wank around too high a temp burning the artisan beans and changing the proteins in the organic milk etc.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 17/01/2025 09:20

I'm 50 by the way but have always had hot hot coffee

RhathymicandMaenadic · 17/01/2025 09:20

We've had the racists already today, now it's the ageists.

Joyfulspringflowers · 17/01/2025 09:20

Why turn this into yet another ageist thing?
Surely it's about personal preferences and nothing to do with age?

Weepixie · 17/01/2025 09:22

I’ve always wanted my meals and drinks to be as hot as they can be to the extent my family remind me often they don’t have asbestos lined mouths like I do.

For me, making sure food and drinks are served hot to those around me is part of how I care about them.

wholettheturnipsburn · 17/01/2025 09:23

It's a well known condition

Up until the night before your 65th birthday you drink warm drinks but when you wake up on the morning of your 65th it's the rules that one of your presents must be asbestos spray which is then liberally applied as part of an old person's morning routine

They all start rising at 5am to make the most of the hot coffees

Really OP

DappledThings · 17/01/2025 09:24

My mum and MIL have always liked theirs far hotter than me. I'm regularly not able to even start my Americano with cold milk for 5 minutes after MIL has finished her black one.

I don't think it's age related, just preferences.

I like pretty much all my drinks with about a 10 degree range. Don't like anything from the fridge or with ice or anything scalding hot.

A standard Americano with cold milk is a good 15 minutes before it's drinkable for me.

borntobequiet · 17/01/2025 09:24

I’m old, and like my coffee hot but not scalding. I have noticed that some younger people seem to like it barely lukewarm. Perhaps it’s because they have to eke out their time when using the wifi in coffee shops, and get used to cold coffee? But they can be strange creatures. I saw a young person order an iced coffee the other day when the temperature outside was 0°. That’s just foolishness.

echt · 17/01/2025 09:26

Do you know all 65+ women?
No you don't.
Fucking stupid thread.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/01/2025 09:28

I’m not sure it goes by age but there are people like that in the world certainly.

My Mum and my aunt are 18 months apart in age. My Mum lets her hot drinks go pretty much cold before touching them (she takes so long to drink a tea or coffee!) but my aunt requires it scalding. So I don’t think you can generalise.

You have to be careful around my aunt, as your tea will have just cooled to a perfect temperature (so my midway point between the two of them which I think is fairly average) and she’ll have it whipped off you and replaced with a new scalding one as “it had gone cold, I thought you’d like another” 😂

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2025 09:29

Because we can
