Shop allows dogs in and my item is ruined

Argh. Still annoyed even typing this

Visited a store of a well known aspirational brand today.

They let dogs in and have water bowls outside, encouraging dogs to 'take a sip' and then goes on to say all dogs on leads or dogs in arms are welcome inside

I had just spent good money on something and stopped to have a look at something on the display table near the exit.

The owner seemed to have been having a browse next to me and her dog proceeded to go right next to me! My paper bag from the shop got wet Sad

The store assistant noticed, giggled and went to get some stuff to clean up. No mention of my bag or compensating me when I said 'Oh dear, it's on my bag now'. She just said 'ha, what are they like!' Then ignored me and started chatting to the owner who whilst the cleaning stuff was fetched, kept apologising to me over and over

And in truth, it isn't the dog owners fault really. The ultimate blame is with the shop for allowing dogs of any kind beyond guide dogs into the place.

I asked for a clean bag. Discovered my item also got wet. Shop assistant said 'oh, hopefully it'll just wash out!' And that was that

I was so embarrassed and upset that I left

AIBU to think dogs shouldn't be in shops? I can sort of see the appeal to have a tasteful sausage dog allowed in but not medium+ size breeds!

Sorry couldn't get beyond "well known aspirational brand"

That has to be some kind of Mumsnet bingo card for that phrase!

SlebBB · 16/01/2025 23:04

Shops fault, they encouraged the dog into the store.

Motomum23 · 16/01/2025 23:04

I had my brand new hoody on the last year with all our belongings
Dog comes running up and wees all over my hoody and the owner did nothing. When I complained to her she got hobby in response and actually threw a handful of coppers at me for 'dry cleaning'. I don't expect to have to wash dog wee out of my belongings because an owner can't control their dog in public - I wouldn't let a toddler wonder over and piss on someone's stuff.... OP I would have demanded a replacement.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 16/01/2025 22:20

Why would you leave the shop with a piss-soaked garment?! What did you have to be embarrassed about?

This! I'm a dog owner but it doesn't mean I'd leave a shop with my items covered in dog piss!

Conversely, why don't we start putting children first, and counter all these menacing dogs everywhere and go back to how it used to be, when dogs weren't everywhere. It's awful for so many of us.

Most dogs aren’t ‘menacing’, plenty of children and families have dogs and love them. It’s probably awful for a minority of people, due to a minority of bad dog owners. Like anything else in life.

smellydog1 · 16/01/2025 23:05

Some dogs are better behaved and cleaner than some people. I would much rather be in a shop, cafe, pub with dogs than some people, especially the ones who have feral kids. On this occasion though OP should have asked the owner to reimburse you or took it back for an exchange

blubberyboo · 16/01/2025 23:05

Also people who take dogs into shops and cafes are just thoughtless idiots.

Leave them at home. Can't go anywhere now with dog owners tripping you up with extendable leads and they just stand there glancing at you thinking you are about to coo all over their yappy dog. No we are waiting for you to get it out of the way. we aren't interested in your mutt, we don't want to see or hear it, nor smell it on the products we are purchasing. Especially places serving food as who wants to eat with wet dog smell and aggravating allergies. Any cafe that advertises as dog friendly is a hard pass. 2 such cafes I know of have closed their doors as it didnt work out. After constant facebook posts banging on about " furbabies welcome, bring your pooch" I guess furbabies arent buying food and other people dont want to eat with them.

This shop had the policy of allowing dogs in so they must have factored in the possibility of this happening in their risk assessment.

OOOtil2025 · 16/01/2025 23:06

I appreciate you’re annoyed - I would be too. And I’m a dog owner. This was the owners fault as you do need to pay attention to them and not just get distracted with the shopping.

Having said that mine love the occasional jaunt to John Lewis or The Range.

Not all dogs / owners are badly behaved. In fact on the bus this evening a couple got on. Alcoholics I believe. And they both pissed all over the seat they were on. And it stank (think strong ammonia in your eyes). It was running down the bus and the seat was sodden wet. When my dog is on she sits on my knee (never the seat) and watches out the window.

Some people are badly behaved. Not all dogs.

daffodilandtulip · 16/01/2025 23:07

I love my dog dearly but I can't think of anything worse - for me or for her - than trawling her around shops.

She pissed on the floor in the vets once when she was really unwell, and I insisted on cleaning it up, and they are used to it!

TunipTheVegimal24 · 16/01/2025 22:57

Wait... did the bag get wet from dog drinking water, or dog piss??

her dog proceeded to go right next to me!

‘to go’ has really only one possible meaning here!!😉

fashionqueen0123 · 16/01/2025 23:08

BeeDavis · 16/01/2025 22:39

You probably need to work on that because if your child screams just seeing a dog then she’s gonna have a pretty bad time of it

We are for sure but I wouldn’t expect to see one in a shop!

oakleaffy · 16/01/2025 23:11

GoldenGail · 16/01/2025 22:04

And if it had been a guide dog ???

It wouldn't have been. A woman I know has had three guide dogs over the years and none of them would ever piss like this.

They empty out on command.

They are immaculately trained.

My well mannered dog {not a guide} wouldn't piss in a shop either. @shedidwhatnan I'd complain to the manager and get your item replaced.

Too many dogs are allowed to shit and pee in shops. Bad training.

oakleaffy · 16/01/2025 23:13

SlebBB · 16/01/2025 23:04

Dog owner's fault as well for not training it to pee outside appropriately.

TheTwirlyPoos · 16/01/2025 23:13

I have a dog and I'd be absolutely mortified if that happened.

GuineaPigPosie · 16/01/2025 23:13

This exact thing could have happened on the street outside the shop

I would not have left the shop with my new purchase covered in dog piss. I would have insisted on a replacement and it was up to the shop and dog owner as to who stumped up the cost.

oakleaffy · 16/01/2025 23:16

healthybychristmas · 16/01/2025 22:51

Oh for heaven's sake, a guide dog wouldn't do a pee in a shop! It's a completely different situation.

People really can be air headed on Mumsnet.
A Guide dog = One of the best and most rigorously trained dogs one is ever likely to find as regards behaving impeccably in public.

Some of the usual suspects have NC for this post I see (the one who says to either cull all dogs or let them roam free like in the old days). I had a chuckle - I bet you’ll see what I mean if you look at PPs names.
My dog has never piddled or pooped in a shop.

Thank god someone else isn’t as gullible. I was beginning to wonder!

Its the anti dog klaxon being sounded by a one post OP who then vanishes.

I’ve never seen a dog piss or shit in a shop. It must be extremely rare.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 16/01/2025 23:00

YANBU but why on earth did you just leave without saying anything when their policy to let in dogs meant the item you had just paid for had (I assume) been pissed on?!

Do people have no backbone these days?

Yeah, I've behaved like a real wet wipe

I have the item outside my house in an additional bag. I will be returning tomorrow to complain in person

Shop is in Hitchin. Wonder if anyone here has come across it!

I have a dog, {well trained} and we were in a local park.
I had a bag with a loaf and milk in there that I'd just bought.

A horrible ''Poo'' cross came and cocked it's leg on my shopping bag {as I was holding it }- I complained to it's owner who to be fair paid for the ruined bread and milk- and the bag.

He didn't want to take the pissy stuff, so I put it in a bin in the park.

A pet shop locally complains about people who let their dogs piss up hay bales and sacks of food.
People just aren't training their dogs.

Plawp · 16/01/2025 23:20

StormingNorman · 16/01/2025 22:53

Because her life doesn’t revolve around your child?

People who take their dogs shopping clearly allow their life to revolve around their dogs, which is deeply embarrasing

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 16/01/2025 22:07

Why didnt you stand at the till and insist on an exchange for an alternative? I would have.

Me too!
