Shop allows dogs in and my item is ruined

Argh. Still annoyed even typing this

Visited a store of a well known aspirational brand today.

They let dogs in and have water bowls outside, encouraging dogs to 'take a sip' and then goes on to say all dogs on leads or dogs in arms are welcome inside

I had just spent good money on something and stopped to have a look at something on the display table near the exit.

The owner seemed to have been having a browse next to me and her dog proceeded to go right next to me! My paper bag from the shop got wet Sad

The store assistant noticed, giggled and went to get some stuff to clean up. No mention of my bag or compensating me when I said 'Oh dear, it's on my bag now'. She just said 'ha, what are they like!' Then ignored me and started chatting to the owner who whilst the cleaning stuff was fetched, kept apologising to me over and over

And in truth, it isn't the dog owners fault really. The ultimate blame is with the shop for allowing dogs of any kind beyond guide dogs into the place.

I asked for a clean bag. Discovered my item also got wet. Shop assistant said 'oh, hopefully it'll just wash out!' And that was that

I was so embarrassed and upset that I left

AIBU to think dogs shouldn't be in shops? I can sort of see the appeal to have a tasteful sausage dog allowed in but not medium+ size breeds!

This is the owners fault!!

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 16/01/2025 22:28

It's getting bloody ridiculous.. And I have 4 ddogs. That can manage at home while I pop to the shops... Sat in a Dunelm CAFE 2 tables from a yappy fucker... How the couple had the brass neck to sit drinking tea I have no idea. I left mine and grabbed ds's food and we left.... Raged all the way home.

ISaidOopsUpsideYourHead · 16/01/2025 22:28

That is awful. No way would I have left with the soiled article. How gross.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 16/01/2025 22:07

Why didnt you stand at the till and insist on an exchange for an alternative? I would have.

This. They shouldn't allow dogs in their shops if they are not prepared to cough up when the inevitable happens and dogs damage other customers property.

Didimum · 16/01/2025 22:30

YANBU I am sick of dogs being allowed everywhere.

dontknowwhathappens · 16/01/2025 22:30

I am a dog owner and I take my dog into shops, there is no way I would have missed my dog do this - as he is always close to me. In the very unlikely event he did- I would have offered to pay for dry cleaning/ replace item.

StormingNorman · 16/01/2025 22:30

Use your words: “the dog has peed on my new jumper, I’m going to need an exchange”.

Nonaynevernomore · 16/01/2025 22:31

Cosyblankets · 16/01/2025 22:24

Of course it's the owner's fault.
What is an aspirational brand?

Or a tasteful sausage dog

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 16/01/2025 22:32

Why did you leave without demanding a replacement.

Nonaynevernomore · 16/01/2025 22:32

What about tasteful sausage dogs?

or rats?

HighSpecWhistle · 16/01/2025 22:33

I would take it back, explain the situation and demand a refund. You’re right, they shouldn’t allow dogs and the fact she laughed that is was in my new item would piss me off no end.

GoldenGail · 16/01/2025 22:04

And if it had been a guide dog ???

Guide dogs are very well trained. That dog obviously wasn't or the owner has completely ignored the toilet needs and would rather shop. Rubbish owner strikes again

Firingsz · 16/01/2025 22:34

I cannot believe you left a shop with a piss soaked item that you had just paid for.

Unbelievable.

FurryBalonz · 16/01/2025 22:34

GoldenGail · 16/01/2025 22:04

And if it had been a guide dog ???

That wouldn't happen because guide dogs are especially trained to behave well in shops and not do this kind of thing.

UncharteredWaters · 16/01/2025 22:36

Take it back and get a refund.
If they don’t think it’s an issue then they won’t mind refunding it.

Otherwise take it to social media….

Can I ask why you take your dog into shops? Are you aware that lots of people are fearful of dogs?

My 4 year old was involved in a near dog attack and is now petrified of dogs. There’s literally nowhere he can go now without being constantly on watch for dogs.

Why can’t you leave your dog at home for a few hours?

Themaths · 16/01/2025 22:36

Did the dog wee on the bag OP? Take the item back tomorrow and ask for an exchange, I'm shocked that the staff didn't exchange for you there and then.

ScouserInExile · 16/01/2025 22:37

That is a disgusting comment!!! In my village the Dachshunds seem to be amongst the most badly behaved dogs whereas most of the large dogs behave impeccably. I had sympathy up until you said that...😠

Literally.

Spirallingdownwards · 16/01/2025 22:38

You were in the store and dint say to the owner of the store that you wanted to exchange the item or a refund because their policy of allowing dogs in the store has led to it being ruined. The store owner would have also had the chance to ask the dog owner to pay for the damage too.

John Lewis lets dogs in now. Its just revolting.

What? I don't believe that.
I have a dog but I'd never take her to john lewis!

coralsky · 16/01/2025 22:39

Wait did it piss on it?
And you just left ?
😂

BeeDavis · 16/01/2025 22:39

fashionqueen0123 · 16/01/2025 22:08

Yuck. My child is scared of dogs so a massive scream would have been heard if a dog appeared. I would have asked them to replace the item

You probably need to work on that because if your child screams just seeing a dog then she’s gonna have a pretty bad time of it

Newmeagain · 16/01/2025 22:39

This trend started off with fairly small dogs being taken inside shops. Now it has spread and I have seen very large dogs being taken inside shops, often quite small shops where there is little room. It’s madness.
