Shop allows dogs in and my item is ruined

Argh. Still annoyed even typing this

Visited a store of a well known aspirational brand today.

They let dogs in and have water bowls outside, encouraging dogs to 'take a sip' and then goes on to say all dogs on leads or dogs in arms are welcome inside

I had just spent good money on something and stopped to have a look at something on the display table near the exit.

The owner seemed to have been having a browse next to me and her dog proceeded to go right next to me! My paper bag from the shop got wet Sad

The store assistant noticed, giggled and went to get some stuff to clean up. No mention of my bag or compensating me when I said 'Oh dear, it's on my bag now'. She just said 'ha, what are they like!' Then ignored me and started chatting to the owner who whilst the cleaning stuff was fetched, kept apologising to me over and over

And in truth, it isn't the dog owners fault really. The ultimate blame is with the shop for allowing dogs of any kind beyond guide dogs into the place.

I asked for a clean bag. Discovered my item also got wet. Shop assistant said 'oh, hopefully it'll just wash out!' And that was that

I was so embarrassed and upset that I left

AIBU to think dogs shouldn't be in shops? I can sort of see the appeal to have a tasteful sausage dog allowed in but not medium+ size breeds!

Yuck! Everyone I know dislikes dogs in shops - including dog owners.

Curious to see how this unfolds for retailers. I’ve completely stopped going to Starbucks and Cafe Nero due to all the barky dogs. How many others have done the same and has it occurred to the retailers that it might be offputting 🤔

Costa don't allow dogs.

There are 4 independent coffee shops in my small town. All of them allow dogs. Costa doesn't. Yet there are constant complaints on local Facebook pages about Costa's no dog policy. It has to be said that the other coffee shops are more popular than Costa regardless of dogs. (Not a dog lover personally although don't hate them)

I posted earlier that my dog pooed in Pets At Home. She would never toilet indoors at home or in the car etc so I was surprised. She isn't used to shops though (was only in there for the vets) so I'm guessing she was a bit confused and overwhelmed.

I've seen several dogs go in there though and I doubt they're all not toilet trained. I actually saw one cock it's leg up the stack of kibble bags and made a mental note never to buy anything from there that wasn't above waist height!

Your dog probably reacted to the smell of where someone else’s dog pooped.

Thus is why dogs in general stores is a bad idea.

Yep, it’s all wrong. I agree with you OP. I was in a shop recently where a dog was digging its nose into everything. Gross. I’m sure I’ll get jumped on by dog lovers for saying this, but I can’t understand why people feel the need to take their dogs EVERYWHERE these days. What’s the problem leaving dogs at home whilst you pop to the shops for a couple of hours? I can’t imagine the dog particularly enjoys a shop.

Lately I’ve noticed quite a few shops with polite notices saying no dogs allowed (except assistance dogs, of course) so maybe the tide is turning?

M/y dog comes everywhere with me, because I need him for work and nowadays you can't leave a dog in the car for 5 minutes otherwise some busybody is threatening to break your windows. Of course he's going to have to come into a cafe or whatever with me if I am out working for the day. Not everyone's lives are the types of lives where you 'pop out to the shops for a few hours'

I’m a massive dog lover.

Dogs should be left at home, not in shops, and not in the majority of restaurants/cafes.

I leave my dog at home, and don’t want to deal with other dogs when I’m at shops or having a coffee.

GoneTooFarAgain · 17/01/2025 12:04

That's awful.

I'm a dog lover but that is 100% the owner's fault - you do NOT bring your dog in unless you're confident it knows not to piss inside!!

Shitty behaviour by the owner - but also by the shop. I'd email them, explain the situation and request a refund / exchange. Definitely put your foot down.

Agree. My dog is well trained but she could clear a table with her happy tail. No way would I subject anybody to her whilst they're trying to enjoy a peaceful coffee 🙈

Honestly this is the owners problem not the shop assistants problem. If my dog pissed on something it would be my responsibility to sort it out not the person working in the place where I happened to be.

In which case retail would grind to a standstill if every issue in the shop become the owners' issue...

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/01/2025 12:11

By the same token, not everyone's lives are the type where you can have a dog as a pet.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 17/01/2025 12:14

2 questions

  1. What is an "aspirational brand"
  2. Why are sausage dogs (in your mind) tasteful
MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/01/2025 12:15

NoCarbsForMe · 16/01/2025 22:41

🤣 something that people buy to make themselves feel superior to others.

It's a bit like people who buy "premium" model cars 🤣

It's something that cost the OP more than buying an acrylic jumper from M&S. And a shop where premium service might be expected

theemmadilemma · 17/01/2025 12:17

Nice outcome.

Sounds like the owner was left down by her staff not knowing the correct action to take in that situation. Hopefully she's now trained them about it!

BlueRobins · 16/01/2025 22:44

why put your items down near a dog ?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. All OP's fault

BlueRobins · 16/01/2025 22:44

why put your items down near a dog ?

Dogs move around.

OP didn't say that she put her things down next to a dog.

eww

Eww at White Stuff or the dog pissing on OP's new purchase that she had chosen to buy?

Guide dogs don't cock their legs in shops!

Neither do service dogs. Guide dogs are only one type of service dog, and all service dogs are permitted to accompany their owners.

Waitinggame42023 · 17/01/2025 12:39

It's getting beyond ridiculous now. I went in to a well-known baby shop over the summer, it was chucking it down outside and I got caught behind a dog and owner at the entrance. Owner asked the shop assistant if her dog was allowed and I couldn't believe it when the reply was 'yes'!

It was bad enough gagging on the wet dog stink (super-strength pregnancy nose) but watching it shake itself off next to the rails of newborn clothes and blankets was a shocker. They charge £28 a sleepsuit and allow filthy, stinking wet dogs to contaminate items intended for babies. I couldn't believe it.

Well I just wanted to add that the store manager was aware of this thread, and refunded me immediately (no stock to exchange). She was very apologetic this morning. I wonder if she's a Mumsnet user or if someone she knows just linked her to the thread

She also issued me a £50 voucher so it has been made right Smile

Oh that's great. Glad she was nicer and more reasonable than some posters on this thread

Depends what the item was damaged?

Keeponkeepingon9 · 17/01/2025 10:06

If a child slipped on dogs urine and was injured surely the parents would be entitled to sue John Lewis for negligence in having a dogs allowed policy & not taking due care to ensure the mess was cleaned up immediately,or at the very least cordoned off until dealt with.

Only if the child were injured

ruethewhirl · 17/01/2025 12:46

Livelovebehappy · 17/01/2025 00:06

Absolutely not true. At least not where I live. Cafes are starting to allow dogs due to it increasing the footfall through their doors. Most dog owners are out and about on walks on the weekends, and so often utilise the cafes during their walks. Whereby families increasingly stay indoors, as they can’t prise their children away from their devices long enough to get them outdoors. This was clearly portrayed during the last couple of snowy weekends at our local park (with dog friendly cafe). There’s a slope which I remember back in the day would be hugely populated by families taking their kids sledging. When we were there, there were just a couple of families there on their sledges. So sad to see.

Sorry, did you just suggest that dog owners have better life priorities than non-dog-owning parents? No sweeping generalisations there, then...

CellophaneFlower · 17/01/2025 12:47

Nsky62 · 17/01/2025 12:42

Why does it matter what it was? Surely people are entitled to make it out the shop they've just bought something from without it being showered in urine?

Well that's a great result!

Well done TWC. {We bought some Christmas copper 'seed' lights from there years ago and they are still going strong}

outdooryone · 17/01/2025 12:56

I too hate dogs in a shop. Other than service dogs (which by the way should be like a Blue Badge Scheme and registered with ID, because at present anyone can claim 'service dog') none should be allowed in.

@IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls

Hmm. Generally humans don’t shit on the pavement, sniff each others arses in public and piss over consumables - although I agree it’s a close call.

Some humans actually stick their fingers up other humans arses. How do you know if they’ve washed them before touching products at aspirational shops? 😂

Just don't shop there, problem solved.

Well, only if the OP had the power to turn back time
