Yesterday when I took my daughter to her dance class there was another child there who is 3 and still wears nappies and her mum was in the waiting area with the rest of us. Halfway through the session her daughter had soiled her nappy and the staff brought her through to the waiting area and told her mum. rather than go to the toilets to change her she just lay out a changing mat on the sofa and proceeded to change her right where she was. No one said anything not even the staff.

Am I right in saying this is totally unacceptable ? not to mention unfair on the child.

Was there changing facilities there? Yeah that's not very nice for anyone involved. Nobody said anything?

DGPP · 16/01/2025 15:15

I don’t see the issue if child was on a changing mat. Maybe the changing facilities are horrible and inadequate

HawkinsTigers · 16/01/2025 15:15

I was with a friend when she did this once, in a cafe garden on one of the picnic benches. I was mortified, I didn’t say anything as I was so gobsmacked. There was no one else there at the time fortunately. .

Bookaholic73 · 16/01/2025 15:16

That’s gross, you definitely aren’t being unreasonable. I don’t want to smell a child’s dirty nappy 🤮

GiveMeStrengthAndVodka · 16/01/2025 15:16

This is horrible and lazy!

I used to work in a cafe and people would regularly change their babies wet nappies on the sofas and sometimes even left the nappy for me to dispose of on the tray or coffee table. 😖

People are gross!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 16/01/2025 15:18

Yanbu, absolutely disgusting

PrincessAnne4Eva · 16/01/2025 15:24

Ugh some manky cow changed a three or four year old at the bottom of the slide in our local soft play the other day. 🤢 DD had to sit at the top and wait to come down. There were ample changing facilities.

I've changed my baby on a mat on the grass outside in the summer. That's the only exception I'd make.
Tell a lie. I was at a wake and there were no changing facilities whatsoever. A cold pub floor toilet not appropriate. No one batted an eyelid at changing mat in quiet corner of the room but DS was only a few months old.
For toddlers who can stand, you take them in the toilets and change them standing up!!! Easy!

Agreed! Also some kids may tease her over this also.

Same. I checked there was no one nearby first, though!

mollymazda · 16/01/2025 15:30

i've changed DGS's nappy while in his pram in a cafe before! (aged about 10 weeks) he was laid in his pram, bish bash bosh, job done and a quick tript to the loo's for a hand wash! we were sitting in a quiet part of the cafe, and the nappy change facilities were out of order, so not a lot of choice, however i don't see an issue with it...but i would never change a dirty nappy in the same way.

Yes, same, was discreet and didn't do it in an area solely for children playing. The grass i did it on probably had had dogs weeing and pooing on it at some point!

FurryBalonz · 16/01/2025 15:31

Age 3? Poor kid, how self conscious she must feel.

Gotthatbigpenergy · 16/01/2025 15:31

For A baby it’s ok but not for a toddler or bigger child

tease her for still wearing nappies ? thats a good point actually I used to work at a nursery and the older kids there did associate nappies with babies. also my son is 4 and wears a nappy to bed but he doesnt like me putting it on him infront of other people.

I have changed mine's wet nappy on the floor a couple of times when there haven't been any changing facilities available and no one was around, however I wouldn't do it with a poo. I'd take her into any toilet to do that.

yeah she was 3, i didnt really notice her reaction her mum just told her to lay down on the sofa and to lift up her bum and she did so. she was keen to get back to dancing though

It's pretty normal at the baby classes I attended for mums to just scoot their baby to the side and change their nappy rather than wander off looking for changing facilities

Soonenough · 16/01/2025 15:57

Yuck. Sorry if her DD can attend dance class and follow instructions she should be toilet trained. Unless SN involved at 3 it is unacceptable. Just recently a report was done that said kids were being sent to Reception in nappies . Totally wrong and unnecessary. Lived in different countries and no way would this be tolerated. My local playschools accept children from 2 years 9 months but only if toilet trained.

Nothatgingerpirate · 16/01/2025 15:58

Of course it's unacceptable.
But what is (forced on us) accepted nowadays is vastly different to what was accepted thirty years ago.
Just commented on another thread about this country "not being that bad". It's worse.

Goldleafcat · 16/01/2025 15:58

Hmm, did the venue have adequate changing facilities?

I’ve changed my toddlers nappy in the boot of my car a few times where there wasn’t a decent alternative. If they’ve done a poo it’s tricky to change them standing up. And sometimes even if there are changing facilities, they can be absolutely filthy (or maxed out on the weight limit).

Extremely grim and odd to do it at the bottom of a slide at soft play though!

At 3 the child needs to be taught about privacy and waiting rooms are not the place for poo.
