Thames Water bill - how can this be right?

Tinseltuttifruitti · 16/01/2025 09:11

My water bill has increased by 50 percent even though my usage has gone down slightly, has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything I can do about it? Thanks all. It's so disheartening that every month things are more expensive.

All water bills are due to rise even more from April.

This article gives pointers for possible saving - but the days of cheap water have gone.

The answers in the first two words of your post.
"Thames Water".
Fucking bastards.

TeenLifeMum · 16/01/2025 09:54

We get an annual letter and it’ll either say “you don’t owe any money but we’re doubling your direct debit” with no explanation, or “you owe £5 and we’re reducing your dd buy £20 a month”. Neither make any fucking sense so then we have to call and tell them to set it at an amount we guess at. Bonkers. This is South west water but they’re all terrible.

Bjorkdidit · 16/01/2025 09:58

What has increased? The amount you pay per volume of water, your usage, or your direct debit amount? It would depend which of these it is as to what you can do about it.

I know there's some issues with Thames Water but not how this has translated into increases in customer bills.

Iheartmysmart · 16/01/2025 09:59

I’m with Thames Water and had a water leak. They fixed it and fitted a new water meter but then cancelled my direct debit as they said I didn’t owe them anything. Despite calling frequently to try and reinstate it, they refused. Then I had a bill last year saying I owed them £460 as I’d not paid for any water the previous year! My payments then went from £22 a month to £45 to repay the debt plus this year’s usage.

ChocHotolate · 16/01/2025 10:12

Our bills have increased so that they can pay their share holders their dividends whilst not actually spending extra money to fix leaks etc
Bastards

SerendipityJane · 16/01/2025 10:14

Someone has to pay for those bonuses.

Seems like this year it's you.

marshmallowmix · 10/02/2025 10:36

I just got an email price going up by £16 per month it is daylight robbery....

LutherRalph1 · 10/02/2025 11:20

I'm not with Thames water but my bill was huge this month but turns out the water and waste had been merged as it was previously split - don't know if that's across the board?

And the massive fines they were given too. Fine the company and the cost is passe dto rhe customers they failed originally

ObsidianTree · 10/02/2025 11:28

They put me on a higher DD rate and when I got my yearly bill. After 6 months I had more credit than the last bill was. So I cancelled my direct debit and reinstalled it for £5 a month. Don't see the point for paying for water I haven't used yet and think the credit I have will cover most of what the next bill will be.

Maybe they are trying to let credit be built up to get more money from customers?

Crunchymum · 10/02/2025 11:28

Thames Water here and it's gone up by £19 a month. So I now pay £67 a month 😡

marshmallowmix · 10/02/2025 11:35

am similar @Crunchymum it is madness 😡

TheodoraCrumpet · 10/02/2025 11:40

Mine went up by over 30%, in spite of being in credit. No explanation beyond the standard blurb about projected usage. Nothing to do with you putting up the price without a single word about environmental improvements. Oh, and a new note about the dire effect failing to pay would have on my credit score. I pay by direct debit, always have, so no history of defaulting. Very annoying.

theresnolimits · 10/02/2025 11:52

Yes, this is me too with Thames Water. DD is increasing from £32 to £65 in April and on my bill it says ‘congratulations, your usage has gone down this year’.

It also says ‘ our costs are increasing 10%’ - so why is my bill increasing 50%?

I notice too on their breakdown of costs on the pie chart there’s no ‘shareholder payment’ section and yet I think this represents some 20% of their costs!

I think I’m going to end up massively in credit at which point my DD will go down again. But not before they’ve held on to my money. I think it’s a massive scam to make themselves look more profitable.

When my fuel DD went up I was able to reduce it on line; I can’t see any way to do this in my water bill. Anyone have any ideas?

Not going up - "changing". Seriously, just be straight with people!

marshmallowmix · 10/02/2025 12:12

prices are going up that is the facts, the increases are huge for me it is over 35% increase per month....how is that allowed

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 10/02/2025 12:32

United Utilities customer here, i have a small 3 bed house, nothing extravagant, before i was on a meter i was paying £1000 a year, no idea why, i did query and told it was on the rates system, my parents live in the same town and they paid £500 a year.

Went onto a meter, now pay £40 a month so god knows how much i would be paying now if i hadnt got a meter installed.

Noticed recently that United Utilities vans are now green, they used to be white. You are not fooling anyone you are green UU, you river polluting bastards.

Me, too. 😭

Actually I have just got my new water bill for 2025 and it's gone up from £67 to £92.

What the actual fuck?

Going to give them a call to get on a meter.

Stinksmum · 05/03/2025 13:21

Yorkshire Water are putting their prices up by 30%. I'm not sure how we are supposed to actually afford anything with all these price rises. My disposable income seems to be shrinking every month.

Minikievs · 05/03/2025 13:22

Severn Trent
I've gone from £48 to £62 Confused
There's only me and DC. I filled in one of those comparison things and it said it'd be even more on a meter 😱

Severn Trent here too. I am on a meter paying £30 a month. Just me and adult ds. Hope this helps.

DazedDragon · 05/03/2025 13:30

Well for starters Thames water have just secured a £3 BILLION loan because they were going to run out of money by the end of March.

They've been in financial trouble for 18 months and the government are on standby to put them in special measures.

They've also had huge debt payments delayed.

This is why their bills have gone up so much.

And yet they still pay £290 Million a year to share holders...

They've also had huge fines for pumping sewage into rivers.

The whole thing is a disgrace!

Broadswordcallingdannyboy1 · 05/03/2025 13:33

Mine has gone from £88 per month to £123!! Along with the Council Tax increase, I will no longer be able to support our local businesses.
