To wonder what could Starmer do, to turn things around?

He was elected on fewer votes than Corbyn with very lukewarm support, the Tories lost that election, Labour did not sweep in on a tide of public approval, they just benefitted from peoples anger at the Conservatives. Since then, Starmers approval rating has tanked. He seems to have gone from one ill judged move to the next and seems totally tone deaf in speeches. Can he turn it around? What would he need to do?

The best thing that Starmer could do is to fire whoever is in charge of their PR and communications. They really need a non war mongering version of Alistair Campbell. They have actually done some good things since taking office, but they have no ability to control the narrative.

Absolutely. I couldn’t agree more. They could do with employing the actual Campbell for a few months to set the strategy and recruit a crack team to implement it.

But you don’t seem happy here. Like another poster said you’re slavering for failure which to me is sad. Any normal Brit would want their government to improve things and give them time to do it. People moaned about the Conservatives because they were complacent and dishonest and incompetent not because of some random illogical dislike.

So many claiming to know how odd.

I don’t think the economics of Labour’s policies stack up, other commentators say the same, really you’re reading too much personal stuff where it’s not there.

It’s purely a comment on economics not my life which I’m happy about.

PandoraSox · 17/01/2025 10:12

It must have impacted you to bring this up.

I don’t know what will happen for sure you sound more worried. If it goes wrong I’m sure it can be corrected

Sorry to disappoint you, but I am fine. My life has not changed one bit for the worse since July. Really you’re reading too much personal stuff where it’s not there.

It’s not though. The tone of your posts is triumphant.

Not odd that so many of us see you.

So you could return the favour. None of what people have tried to post about my personal situation comes close.

Stick to economics and it’s a better discussion that isn’t so off base.

Oh dear..

I think you need to focus on someone else. I mean that in a helpful way. It’s not good to get so tied up on some posts about Labour’s economic policies.

Resign and call an election. Labour are not fit for government.

This with bells on. Utter incompetence that's bordering on dangerous.

Eastern, you post often about your personal situation and how you have your passports ready etc.

I don't. Mostly these days I ignore your posts tbh. But occasionally I respond. Will cease again now.

Well since he literally won't say a thing against Labour on The Rest Is Politics podcast I suspect he's checking his CV for typos now

They should reinstate the winter fuel payment. Lower state pension to age 65. Plus increase the tax threshold to start from 14k. Ensure the state pension triple lock continues too.

PandoraSox · 17/01/2025 10:28

Agree that Labour needs to sort its comms and quickly.

How would you propose paying for all this in reality?

I don't disagree that they would be good things, but lowering the pension age in particular would be unaffordable.

I was going to reply but this seems the best option. That would be great.

I agree, they need to realise that running a country isn't as easy as taking part in a sixth form debating society.

Much as I didn't agree with Corbyn, at least he had a rational plan that made kind of sense. Starmer, Reeves and Raynor are just thrashing around playing the politics of envy to "punish" those who they think need punishing without the slightest concern for the damage to the "bigger picture". School day politics at it's worst! I'd far rather have Corbyn as PM than Starmer.

1dayatatime · 17/01/2025 10:40

@PandoraSox

"How would you propose paying for all this in reality?"

I imagine it will be the usual MN response of "tax the rich " with rich being defined as anyone earning more than me but most definitely not me!

Yet another poster who’s in favour of a (very) early general election.

So, who would you like to win?

caringcarer · 17/01/2025 10:42

StScholastica · 17/01/2025 08:05

Please please Labour, look into all the "non jobs" often at director level, in the NHS and local government and get rid of at least half of them.
They would not be missed and actually things would function a hell of a lot better without them.

There are so many people trying to make a living out of looking busy but do sweet FA.
Meanwhile the rest of us at the coal face are run ragged and picking up the flack for our bosses and the last governments ineptitude.

It needs sorting.

The NHS waste so much money on Equity, Diversity and inclusion Czars who are all employed on over £100k each and they have so many of them. We need more nurses not Czars. The NHS already has good diversity and inclusion so no need for so many of them.

caringcarer · 17/01/2025 10:43

Pressed to soon. Which is already 2023-24 over 40 million.

Guess which way those comments will translate into votes. Here’s a hint, they won’t be going to Reform.

while i was surprised at the amount of votes they had at GE, there is only so much 'growth' of their vote share.

Traditional Labour or LibDem voters are hardly going to be switching to them in their droves. Tories yes. Greens hell no.

So they're primarily taking votes away from the Tories, splitting the right vote.

if it wouldn't completely ruin my life and many others, i'd almost want them to get in and show how little of value hey can actually achieve. But i'm not willing for the country to crash and burn to prove a point.

Restore WFA and increase tax threshold are Reform policies. You know the party who is supposed to be far right because they want to house people who already live here before people coming over on boats illegally.

They never set out how they would pay for this, though. They wanted to increase the threshold to £20k, I think.

Putting a few uncosted sweetners in their "contract" doesn't make Reform any the less odious or far right.

exactly. if anything it shows how disingenuous they are considering they put that in there with no way to budget for it, knowing it wouldn't need to be done.
