To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

What sort of person trolls a SM page about a subject that they disagree with and then goes on another SM page to slag those people off?
You are slagging off parents who have genuine concerns about their children. Wtf has the world come to when parents attack other parents for being worried about, and taking a stand for, their own kids?! Especially on a bloody parenting site!
Your post says a lot about you as a person.

The type of person that revels in another's misfortune. I'm always wary of doing that so not as to tempt fate in my own life.

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 08:35

heavily implying that a degree somehow makes someone more intelligent or better informed.

You’ve inferred that, it was never implied.

True it’ll take a certain view to do that

Yes this is true. You raised it on response to a PP saying that Labour were the party of the non aspirational and you said that actually Labour younger voters are educated to a higher level.

Although TBF that presumably won't be the case at the next election as any aspirational highly educated young person that may have voted Labour in July will have left the country.

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 08:51

I didn’t. I didn’t mention age. I actually said:

Isn’t it interesting that the higher your level of education, the more likely you are to vote Labour?

I clearly asked you what point you were trying to make but you haven't answered.

I'll try again.

Why do you think educational attainment matters so much when it comes to voting?
Labour used to be the party of the working class not young graduates.

NordicwithTeen · 16/01/2025 09:02

Trouble is with everyone in debt from getting a worthless degree they are now all unable to get jobs because the job market has noticed, and now cannot differentiate between a 20yo who would be in the top % until they get into further debt to do a masters or more for a PhD. All Labour have done is lumber every teenager with debt and no job prospects as a thank you. The Blair generation are starting to figure this out. Education only works if it is good education, not going over how to write paragraphs for a year and what a good source is (which should have been learnt at GCSE).

It was in response to a pp saying Labour is the party of the non aspirational. It’s all on the thread, you could just scroll back and look.

Pretty much. We are increasingly alone in our political position anyway. Other electorates taking politicians similar out of power

Yes you said something like that and it appears to be a simplistic statement of fact. Obviously there are reasons for that such as the huge expansion of higher education and that Labour voters tend to be younger hence the corrolation and I hoped my pointing that out was helpful.

In any event, the number of actual Labour voters as a proportion of the electorate was pitiful so we can't really draw many conclusions from it.

That won't be true at the next election of course. Labour are making sure no younger voter will vote for them. Idealistic young people hate a nasty party for a start....

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 09:07

I said exactly that. I copied and pasted it. It was a simple statement of fact. It’s you who’s complicating it.

I've read the thread. I've asked you a few very straight forward questions, you are under no obligation to answer but you have chosen to respond and be evasive.

Nobody actually cares outside Mumsnet. Most people think it's a great idea.

Have you noticed society is falling down around our ears thanks to years of tory mismanagement? Why do you feel other people should be joining you in being up in arms about such a tiny, tiny niche issue?

Totally this.

It's sad

And as for "tax raid". Come on OP 😂

I haven’t been evasive at all. I made a simple statement of fact which couldn’t be clearer supported by evidence as requested. It really is as simple as that regardless of the attempts by you and others to obfuscate and complicate what I said.

I have read the thread. I've also done a PP clarifying what you said. But you haven't responded to anyone who has tried to help you as to why the fact Labour voters may be educated to a higher level. I suppose if you are happy with your statement as a standalone comment. Seems fairly pointless anyway so let's move on.

I’ve also already answered this one. Here’s another copy and paste.

It doesn’t really matter why the most highly educated in society vote for left leaning parties and policies. The fact is that they do.

Exactly. I can’t see what’s wrong with that statement @BIossomtoes . It’s just fact. The thread would have moved on way back if it had just been accepted for what is was.

Education is not declining but people are increasingly voting right across the western world so I wouldn’t put too much into it

Younger people included

You are trying to make a point without saying what you mean. It's dishonest.

Of course questions are allowed but it read more like trying to find a way to discredit a displeasing fact.
