To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

I know. The entire lot of them, she didn’t single out individuals. Unlike you.

Inflation Down
Growth up
IMF upgrading the UK growth forecast
FTSE hits a record high

… what a terrible job she’s doing

EasternStandard · 17/01/2025 16:15

There was plenty of individual abuse against MPs prior to Labour on here anyway. Not sure why anyone would gloss over that,

YouGov has been considered a reliable polling company for a very long time. Some of us aren’t blindly partisan.

True that. I didn’t even vote Labour this time around but I’d drink my own pish before I’d vote for the Tories.
Not all of us high earners think we should circle the wagons and protect the privileged and leave public services to fall apart because we can afford to opt out.

Lets not get too carried away with glad economic tidings.

Inflation was expected to come down no matter who won the election
Growth of 0.1% is less than expected (down 0.1 in Sep/Oct expected to rebound by 0.2% in Nov)
FTSE is high because the pound has dropped against the dollar

hardly “crashed the economy” territory though

Hants123 · 17/01/2025 20:30

I didn't say she had crashed the economy @ExtraOnions - is that the best you're hoping for, not crashing the economy? I was hoping she would come up with a plan of action to increase economic growth, create jobs and direct public spending to where its most needed, I still am hoping that - but unfortunately its looking likely that spending cuts will be announced in March.

I'd also quite like for the Education secretary to know what the impact on VAT on school fees will be on children.

And I'd really like for the 700 million saved in not giving pensioners winter fuel allowance not to result in any elderly person freezing to the point of becoming unwell this winter.

Oh and if its not too much to ask I'd like her to do something about the ever growing wealth inequality.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/01/2025 20:36

Hundreds of visiting music teachers are being forced to switch to ‘self-employment’ and contract direct with parents as a result of this policy, losing their pensions and all their other employment rights, some after 20+ years in the school. I doubt Philipson has even noticed them - they are collateral damage in an ideological policy - the wrong sorts of zero hour contract workers with the temerity to work for the wrong sort of employer. No ‘workers’ rights’ for them. Absolutely disgraceful lack of analysis of the impact of this proposal on the jobs of ordinary working people.

Well today the courts have ruled against the government. All 3 challenges are to be heard as 1 and they have expedited the hearing due to impact on children. The case will now be heard mid-April

Yes she did - during a House of Commons debate in 2020 (the previous poster's link is from a different occasion in 2021);

I am in favour of the removal of the VAT exemption from private schools.
Private education is a luxury and there is a free state school alternative available.
By far the vast majority of people currently cannot afford private school fees.
The fact that a few more people will also not now be afford them is not really a big issue for most of the UK population - we welcome them to the state school majority.

Wow! Jealous much?

Hants123 · 17/01/2025 23:14

Katherine Birbalsingh has just laid into Bridget 'I don't know if you are being ideologically blind and therefore ignoring the obvious negative impact of your decisions - or perhaps you just don't understand the harm your changes will cause.
'I don't actually believe you hate poor kids. I just think you don't know what they need and what true social mobility looks like and requires to succeed. You give the impression of having an unreasonable and unwarranted dislike of academies and free schools, blinded by a Marxist ideology.'

So erm not just out to get private school kids, poor kids on the hit list as well.

Its such a sensible letter and therefore Bridget Philipson will ignore it.

I particularly liked the refrain throughout "what is the problem that you are trying to solve"

Labour hate her though when they should be holding her school up as a model to all.

They should probably just make her Education Secretary. She actually knows what she's doing and has proven amazing results in actual education.

Unlike someone else who just worked for mummy's charity and in politics.

Or just a statement of fact?
Many more CAN afford fees and choose not to. Not everyone thinks sticking your child in a an elitist bubble is actually good for them.

Facts can still make people jealous 🤷‍♀️

That it's an 'elitist bubble' is your opinion. I'm of the opinion that many believe it's monet well spent.

An average Indy, especially outside of the SE, is no more elitist than the state schools in those areas where catchment houses are 500k plus. If you think there is any kind of parity within the state sector and that just by going to "a state school" you are giving them a "real life" experience of the spectrum of social standing that "elitist" schools don't , you are kidding yourself. Even if there is a pocket of less affluent people in one school, do you really think the kids rub shoulders at school? That they don't seem out like with like? Shunning private on ideology does not stand up if you use your wealth to live in a catchment of the "leafy comps" that are almost indistinguishable from modest privates.

Letlooseonthedanse · 19/01/2025 19:51

Of course dear. That’s why everyone else supports taking away the tax breaks - because they’re so egalitarian.
