Who is doing the maths at Asda?

In this day and age, when people have been subjected to the COL crisis, you might think that most people would look at the cost of products by gram, and choose accordingly. How then, can Asda get this SO wrong? 3 different kinds of tuna, but all weigh the same, and yet some genius has them all marked up at different prices per gram. Does no one check this stuff? This is not the first time I've noticed the maths is a load of rubbish. It's not a one off!

I now do my Dad's on line Asda shop, but I can guarantee that if he was still doing it, that he would have taken these figures as totally accurate (83 years old and quite doddery now). How many other people would do the same? And they are simply not right. I think it's quite shocking that a big conglomerate is getting the basics wrong, tbh.

Some mistakes are bad. This one I can't get worked up about. I can see the weight, and the price, and that's all I need to know really. They're all priced the same so it's not like it's encouraging people to buy a more expensive product. A mistake that will probably be rectified at some point.

God I'd love to have so little going on in life that I'd even notice this let alone make a thread in AIBU about it. Sorry OP but YABU.

Yet here you are, reading and commenting 😂- now THAT is having "little going on in life" 😂

senua · 14/01/2025 09:14

How on earth are they getting it wrong? I'd assume that somebody would key in price & weight/volume and the computer would work out the price-per.

This is annoying. I'm used to Asda pulling stunts like pricing larger packets - which you'd expect would get a bulk discount price - as more expensive than smaller packets, so I look at price-per a lot. But now you're telling me that I shouldn't be relying on that either ...

I have actually but then I wouldn't be buying expensive branded Tuna or doing online shopping 🤷‍♀️ and I wouldn't have cared about a mis print.

Edited

Then you seem to have lost your humanity along the way. If you think bad pricing is only online and not in store or only on expensive tuna then I think you will be in for a shock when you re-enter the real world.

@Blondiebeachbabe I would definitely contact Asda but considering they are just as bad in-store I would also copy in Trading Standards.

TheDandyLion · 14/01/2025 09:28

Tesco is the same. I wonder if the price per kilo is the drained weight and the Spring water/brine/oil are all different weights and they've just made up the difference to the total weight of 145g per tin.

Yes OP, in our house it's called an ASDA Special when they do this. You see it often on shelf labels, like items that are £2 each or 2 for £5. 🤣

Saw similar once in Tesco. It was McVities digestives.

TheDandyLion · 14/01/2025 09:30

Same at Sainsburys even on their own branded tuna.

DurhamDurham · 14/01/2025 09:32

Is the difference because it's based on the drained weight? There might be more water/oil/brine in some of the cans.

DorianMeile · 14/01/2025 09:32

TheDandyLion · 14/01/2025 09:30

Same at Sainsburys even on their own branded tuna.

"Tuna tins can have different weights because the amount of tuna meat within each can can vary significantly between brands and even within the same brand, due to differences in the ratio of tuna to liquid (oil or water) in the can, even though the cans themselves might appear the same size; this means the "net weight" on the label may not reflect the actual amount of edible tuna within the can." -

SeaShellsSanctuary180 · 14/01/2025 09:33

So we've established that the tuna needs looking at.

Before I can give an opinion, please can you check every single item that ASDA sell and give me a proportionate percentage of errors.

Only then can anyone say if you are being unreasonable or not 👍

EveryKneeShallBow · 14/01/2025 08:36

I could read it. That has to be against the weights and measures legislation.

Weights and measures legislation, my arse - I complained when M&S were selling some novelty tomatoes - weight difference is two-fold - at the same price. I even photographed them on the scales. Their answer - we are selling it as 'two per packet', not by weight. We are being ripped off everywhere, in every way.

Yes this, I think the weight might be drained weight, but then brine, oil, water, are priced differently.

healthybychristmas · 14/01/2025 09:38

I remember talking to a couple in Asda and trying to persuade them to get the six pack of baked beans because it worked out cheaper than the four pack they were looking at and they just wouldn't do it. It wasn't that each can was cheaper overall, the total was cheaper!

EzraJones · 14/01/2025 09:39

Try checking the prices on sweeteners, the price per unit (1 sweetener) can't really be reported without going to 4 or 5 decimal places, but they usually report to 3 dp, so many brands look like they're the same cost.

Sweeteners are the sort of product that would be better priced as £x.xx per 100 items

But that isn't necessarily wrong. If someone has a weekly budget they might not be able to spend the extra to get the "cheaper per can" 6 pack. This is true of many things. You need to be able to afford the bigger packs to get the savings. Along with having the storage

Of course, this particular couple may just not have been good at maths.

Dosomethingusefulnow · 14/01/2025 09:44

@SoupDragon but the post says it was actually cheaper for the 6 cans than the 4 cans overall.

Is the difference because it's based on the drained weight? There might be more water/oil/brine in some of the cans.

That might possibly be the case for the sunflower oil one but the one in water is far too far off.

From OPs clarifying post
Tuna in Brine marked as 61.6p per 100g (correct)
Tuna in water marked as £3.49 per 100g
Tuna in sunflower oil marked as 85.5p per 100g

HollyKnight · 14/01/2025 09:47

I think it is because the tuna is part of their "big brands event". Those /100g amounts reflect the normal price.

You're right to complain and well done for noticing. I'm quite alarmed to hear it's wrong, as I look at them all the time.

I expected the calculation to be done automatically, so wonder where the error happens.

Noodlehen · 14/01/2025 10:00

Blondiebeachbabe · 14/01/2025 08:43

I don't think so, it clearly says 132g x 4, so each set of 4 tins weighs 528g.

In the past, I have often relied on the figures provided, but just recently started to check, and they are wrong SO often. It's just not trustworthy.

In the example you’ve given, all the tins of tuna provided are the exact same price so I wouldn’t even look at the per 100g figure, I’d select the one I prefer and move on with my day.

Choccyscofffy · 14/01/2025 10:04

Wow they’re all standard price too.

This.

I have lots of spare time but haven't yet been reduced to this thank God 😂

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 14/01/2025 10:08

Given all the issues ASDA are experiencing at the moment, this is probably the least important issue for them. It might be annoying but if you went in a store you'd probably understand more. My local asda car park has been shut for days due to ice, they normally clear the snow but I guess that's another cost cutting measure.

LlynTegid · 14/01/2025 10:12

OP, just contact them and point it out. I doubt many people do look at price per gram, though it should be correct. Technically it is misleading pricing, but I think you should give them a chance to correct it.
