Who is doing the maths at Asda?

In this day and age, when people have been subjected to the COL crisis, you might think that most people would look at the cost of products by gram, and choose accordingly. How then, can Asda get this SO wrong? 3 different kinds of tuna, but all weigh the same, and yet some genius has them all marked up at different prices per gram. Does no one check this stuff? This is not the first time I've noticed the maths is a load of rubbish. It's not a one off!

Yes OP, in our house it's called an ASDA Special when they do this. You see it often on shelf labels, like items that are £2 each or 2 for £5. 🤣

I could read it. That has to be against the weights and measures legislation.

MabelMora · 14/01/2025 08:36

Probably better off complaining to Asda, not Mumsnet 🤷‍♀️.

Blondiebeachbabe · 14/01/2025 08:36

Picture isn't clear :

Tuna in Brine marked as 61.6p per 100g (correct)
Tuna in water marked as £3.49 per 100g
Tuna in sunflower oil marked as 85.5p per 100g

UpUpUpU · 14/01/2025 08:36

The picture is blurry so I cannot read it but can see through the blur that the number are wrong. Its like they pluck the numbers out of the air sometimes

saveforthat · 14/01/2025 08:37

I can't read the price per 100g it's blurred.

Blondiebeachbabe · 14/01/2025 08:40

Might be clearer

It's often the case, plus you can't always tell if they mean the full price or the offer price, if something is on offer. Plus for something like tuna, sometimes it's the full weight, others the drained weight.

I suppose if you were minded to, you could complain to them or trading standards if they don't respond positively.

Could be an accident or a deliberate intent to confuse - after all, supermarkets don't want people to easily work out which product is best value, as no-one would ever buy the stuff that works out at a higher price.

PrincessAnne4Eva · 14/01/2025 08:41

One thought though, as much as I love a good ASDA Special offer, this couldn't be down to them calculating the price per 100g based on drained weight instead of net weight, could it?

User457788 · 14/01/2025 08:41

God I'd love to have so little going on in life that I'd even notice this let alone make a thread in AIBU about it. Sorry OP but YABU.

I don't think so, it clearly says 132g x 4, so each set of 4 tins weighs 528g.

In the past, I have often relied on the figures provided, but just recently started to check, and they are wrong SO often. It's just not trustworthy.

I am BU to think that Asda should get this shit right?

SERIOUSLY?

And you are on MN on a Tuesday morning, so I'm guessing you are not exactly rushed off your feet!

Supermarkets need to get this stuff right.

You've never had to count the pennies in your purse then, or ever had to go without food. Well done you 🙄

I have actually but then I wouldn't be buying expensive branded Tuna or doing online shopping 🤷‍♀️ and I wouldn't have cared about a mis print.

SummerSazz · 14/01/2025 08:50

YANBU - when online shopping I always use the 'price per' as the refining criteria.

Best to report it to trading standards or through local council

I will contact Asda. It just makes me so mad, that shops are getting the basics so wrong.

So what? Are you the MN Police?

Lochroy · 14/01/2025 09:00

I used to work with supermarkets... this will be a mistake. Yes it should be checked but they probably all got set up at different times and no one in the head office will look at them side by side like that.

Just email their customer services with the picture or stick it on social media. It's clearly wrong, but hardly worth bothering trading standards about in the first instance.

The thing about this sort of thing which really pissed me off, and I can no longer remember which retailers it affects, was when some bright spark decreed that all comparisons must be done by weight or volume e.g. g/kg or l/ml.

Which is absolutely useless when you want to compare the price of different weetabix pack sizes by the number of weetabix in them, or dishwasher tablets per packet, for example.

I don’t think the internet is for you then.
