I am sick of hearing about ‘onlyfans models’

MidnightPatrol · 13/01/2025 15:49

Every day, at least once, I am served some content about ‘onlyfans models’ having sex with men, or as is most of the time - several men.

Bonnie Blue, Lilly Phillips. I suppose there are others.

I don’t click on the links, but it’s now a regular part of any social media feed.

Do people really want their social media feeds to be full of content about sex workers?

I have t seen any of that. My feed is all craft sites, recipes, house decorating and lost dogs.

VoltaireMittyDream · 13/01/2025 17:49

Never get any smutty stuff, but my feed is full of things I 100% genuinely never searched for, but clicked on once out of curiosity and now I get them all the time.

It’s mainly videos of Japanese beavers carrying vegetables around, or extreme makeup videos where people paint their faces to look like they have a tiny twerking frog living on the end of their nose.

Clicking on something once - and or watching a video occasionally for a set length of time - say over 30 seconds - indicates to the algorithm a certain level of interest - there's also the 'adjacency' element - think of Amazon when it says 'customers who bought this also bought this' - or Youtube offering you more content based on what you've already watched 'You might like this'.

Those calculations are often made based on how groups of people tend to react. So they create a 'persona' - Women, 38-45, shops Tesco, watches Gogglebox, clicks on cat pics, knits = more likely to click on adverts for fun crochet patterns and videos about lonely Canadian farmers, 9/10 will buy plushie in the shape of a lost pet.

It might not seem obvious to you. Onlyfans content for example might be offered to both those who want to see it and those who are outraged by it. Hate clicks are still clicks for some purposes.

You have to retrain how the algorithm sees you.

Clear caches and search histories
Use incognito mode when on Google
Reject ads and choose 'show less of' religiously

I put yabu but only because you said ,sex workers': they're prostitutes. 'Sex worker' is trying to give it a legitimacy it doesn't have, and those attempts are part of why it's do screwed up at the moment.

Summershame · 13/01/2025 18:07

Sponsored content is an ad by any other name and is targeted in exactly the same way. I have never seen these ads. I’d agree someone, somewhere connected to you is searching…..

cardibach · 13/01/2025 17:52

It wasn’t a judgement. Just wondering if volume affected things. Is it a personal profile or a page as an author? That might affect things too. Just trying to think if reasons.

It's my personal page (the author page is run somewhat differently), but it's open, which is the only reason I have so many 'friends' (I'm not that popular in real life!) I've no idea whether volume affects things, but I know a lot of others are reporting the same thing - only older posts showing, and only a couple of 'real' posts before all the ads and sponsored pages start. Some days I can't see any real people at all!

TBH I’m not even sure they’re prostitutes, as the sex seems to be free, to promote their other paid-for content?

If I understand correctly anyway.

If someone was searching for onlyfans, one would think I’d be getting actually ads for onlyfans (or other ‘adult’ sites or shops) not these news articles / videos about these women.

Everything you see on the internet isn’t because you’ve searched for it. Spend ten minutes on twitter and you’ll see what I mean.

I get no other adult-related content.

Why are they called "models "? Surely the correct title is Only Fans Sex Workers?

Oh yeah, I know all this. But I’m still bemused by the fact that I have emerged in the algorithmic mind as exactly the type of person who wants to see wacky face painting and beavers carrying cabbages, and not much else.

Saya something reassuring about my lack of hate / outrage clicking, at least, if not my intellect 🤣

Thing is it's hard not to click on those cute beaver videos - 30 seconds in and you are doomed to be a beaver lover for ever. You'll probably start getting the groundhog ones next.

poppymango · 13/01/2025 18:27

I don’t get this much (certainly not on instagram) but on X I have seen a few news stories about this sort of thing, and I have to say I’m quite concerned at how normalised it’s becoming - considering what they’re actually talking about is either porn or prostitution.

I suppose it’s the inevitable result of women and girls being told for the last 25 or so years that it’s “empowering” to “take control of your sexuality” (as long as it’s for money and centres the male gaze).

That poor young woman who slept with 100 men in a day - she looked so upset and shocked. Traumatised, even. It’s horrible.

ThejoyofNC · 13/01/2025 17:41

These women make me sick. Especially bonnie blue. The video of her with that well mannered young Christian man just trying to work in five guys gave me the rage.

This video a good example.

It keeps appearing on Twitter etc. I am not clicking on it.

I actually think it’s quite bleak isn’t it.. approaching someone in this way. Imagine if a man approached a woman and asked this.

@Gggglinda glad I am not the only one with this bizarre problem. It’s so gross, I do not want to hear about it.

Why do you call her a "poor, young woman "? She shagged 100 men willingly, and enjoyed it so much her next challenge is to shag 1000 men in a day.

dapsnotplimsolls · 13/01/2025 18:32

The DM etc have articles about these women because they know a lot of their readers will click/have clicked on the articles. Sex sells.

So on Twitter from the home page, you can choose to see a 'following' feed which just posts from people you follow, or a 'For You' feed which is things they think you will like based on who you are following or things you click on.

If you go to the Explore tab you will then have the choice to see a Trending feed based on things it thinks you want to look at.

I'd check out your personal Trending feed and see what that's showing you.

Also in your Twitter feed everytime you see one of these articles you don't want click the three little dots and click the option for 'not interested in this post' or simply block if you don't want the person who posted it either.

CliantheLang · 13/01/2025 20:18

So on Twitter from the home page, you can choose to see a 'following' feed which just posts from people you follow...

On a browser, the fb URL to only see accounts you follow is: https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr

Still get sponsored ads, though.

MermaidEyes · 13/01/2025 20:30

Well Bonnie Blue has done that now so Lily's gonna have to one up her and go for 1100 or something 🙄

I don't get this kind of thing on facebook (although I do get a ton of other crap I don't care about) but I do on X. Made the mistake of clicking on a couple of posts about them and now every day it likes to show me several more posts, just in case I missed the first lot. Although most of the posts I seem to see are people slagging them off rather than media advertising them.

User32459 · 13/01/2025 20:30

Is it just down to liberalism and bad parenting, or is it something else? This is a society in deep decay.

Summershame · 13/01/2025 21:05

Everything you see on the internet isn’t because you’ve searched for it. Spend ten minutes on twitter and you’ll see what I mean.

I work in digital marketing, I know how it works. You don’t receive ads for adult services across normal sites as that would be illegal. That’s why you don’t see adult ads apart from on adult sites. It’s also now illegal to target on certain search characteristics. However, you can see sponsored news stories as these aren’t promoting the site itself.

What you see on Twitter is irrelevant as this is people posting messages with the site deciding the algorithm. What you’re describing is being repeatedly targeted with stories about Only Fans no? This means somewhere along the line you are down as interested in this.

MidnightPatrol · 13/01/2025 21:25

@Summershame its no different on Twitter and Facebook - as I’ve said elsewhere, it’s often the same news sites etc.

Go on the daily mail site now and there is a story about them. Someone above said they’d been on this morning. They are obviously ‘having a moment’ because of their trying to have sex with as many people as possible in 24h. Talk about onlyfans is a bit of a meme among Gen Z.

Several other posters are reporting the same thing - seems unlikely we are all looking at adult content sufficient to just trigger stories about these girls on onlyfans. All the red-tops are publishing endless crap about it, presumably as it’s click bait and gets a reaction.

And - I get served masses of content which is irrelevant and of no interest (about love island, or various Z list celebs, Meghan Markle etc). So much US content despite my not being in the states.

This very explicit (and degrading) stuff has become part of the ‘mainstream’ and it’s gross.

As OP says, sometimes clicking the not interested button actually means you get more.

Remember the Blake Lively story about how PR firms paid to have negative content about her spread over social media? I saw some of those negative articles pop up on my feed, and I have no interest in her or celebrity culture, and DP and DD don’t know who on Earth she is. There are plenty of paid bursts of propaganda/content/media that Twitter in particular puts out, plus all sorts of changes in the algorithms all the time - anyone using it just before the US election will have noticed weird content and alterations to their feed. That’s how they monetise and propagate content. Instagram might not be as bad, but you really notice it on Twitter and to a lesser extent on facebook.

If you think it’s all user-driven and only you control the algorithm by clicking on your interests — well, then I have not just a bridge, but also some lovely dropshipped stretchy tummy control underwear to sell you 🤣

Endofyear · 13/01/2025 22:30

I've literally never seen a story about an only fans model and couldn't name one! Stop following trashy gutter press pages like Daily Mail maybe?
