Asked to do course in work time but likely to not get paid

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 12/01/2025 18:24

I work in childcare and have done for a long time. I'm going on a course next month and it takes place on days I'd normally be at work. I asked if I'd get paid because the course is directly related to work. It's looking like I won't be - is this unusual? I've not come across this issue before.

I'm not in a union with this job.

YABU - no you wouldn't get paid

YANBU - they're being cheeky and I should be paid.

Are they asking you to go on the course?
Is it a course that is required for your job?

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 12/01/2025 18:26

Is your workplace sending you on this course? If so it would normally be in paid time. If you've arranged it yourself, then no.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 12/01/2025 18:26

Did they tell you to go on the course? Or was it offered optionally?

I've had both before. You should be paid if they're 'making' you do it, but if it's optional and they're paying you're free to say no.

ilovesooty · 12/01/2025 18:28

If it's mandatory they should pay you or give you the time back.

Dutchhouse14 · 12/01/2025 18:29

Did work ask you to do the course?
If so of course they should pay you! And bloody cheeky / probably illegal if they don't - check with your union and/or phone ACAS.
If work didn't ask you to do it and it's something you wanted to do to upskill, increase career prospects then you'd probably need to take leave or make up the hours.

Yes - they have asked and it is directly related to and for my job.

If work is sending you on the course then I would assume they pay for your time

OP: I'm not in a union with this job.

@Dutchhouse14 check with your union.

🙄

Yes they are

Thanks for the quick replies. I did think this was the case.

I'm not in a union, unfortunately.

Yes they are

If they're going to try to tell you to attend without being paid it might be a good idea to join a union before they pull their next stunt.

DandyTealSeal · 12/01/2025 18:35

Are you sure you won’t get paid? I wouldn’t even ask if I was put on a course in work time as I’d automatically assume I would get paid as normal.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 12/01/2025 18:36

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 12/01/2025 18:31

Yes they are

It seems unfair then that they don't let you do the course in work time, but perhaps it is in your contract that you may have to do this. I'd have a look.

PinkyFlamingo · 12/01/2025 18:41

I assume you have a contracted amount of hours you get paid for, dont understand why you would get paid less then.

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 12/01/2025 18:43

I've just joined a union

Are you employed or freelance?

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 12/01/2025 18:45

Please don't flame me.
I've just realised that I don't actually have a contract. I normally work 16 hours a week.

The course is in work time.

Yes, I assumed you'd get paid as normal for that week, but instead of doing your normal work you'd be at the training course. This is standard for many employers. Are you on a zero hours contract?

Employed

Why do you think it's looking like you won't get paid?

Notsuchafattynow · 12/01/2025 18:47

Do you get a payslip?

No because I work the 16 hours every week.

Are they pulling a fast one?

Something the supervisor said when I mentioned it.
