I Find Military Guys a Huge Turn-on AIBU?

Okay, so I know that military life and being the wife or partner of someone in the armed forces is nothing like the fantasy. Nonetheless, I find the idea of hot military guys a huge turn-on. AIBU?

I think dating a man on the strength of his profession is probably a mistake. Find a man that suits you for all the reasons you want, but I'd have thought his job would be the last thing on the list.

Unless you have horses and he is a vet, of course...

PinkGoldPeach · 12/01/2025 17:03

My husband was (briefly) in the military. No thanks, I’ve seen what that culture is like. Sexual harassment is rife. Never mind what they get up to on deployment.

Abigaillovesholidays · 12/01/2025 17:03

I've dated 2 ex military men and both had severe PTSD and OCD. If I knew what I know now I would have run a mile!!

PunnyRobin · 12/01/2025 17:03

i am intrigued with military bases and bunker designs

Brains over brawn for me. So go ahead, you'll leave one more brainy guy in the world for me.

I don’t know about the British Army, but in the U.S. Army there are plenty of men who are both fit and intelligent. Perhaps it’s seen as a more desirable career path here.

I've never met a guy with a PhD and that much muscle. Or tbh, any muscle at all!

PhD is no indicator of great intelligence either though, they usually indicate a mind made for painstaking academic work in one subject. It doesn't require a mind that makes a leap in discovery or any kind of genius, they only require an IQ that is above average and an ability to apply themselves to some very boring research work

Having worked with PhD holders I know several I've met can't find their own arse with a mirror and instructions but they do know an awful lot about their PhD subject.

YANBU! 😄🤭

Having said that, I briefly met two army guys when I was at uni years ago - they weren't the brightest and seemed quite angry 😬😬

Funnily enough, I'm watching classic eastenders and robert kazinsky is playing Sean slater, an ex army man - he's so beautiful and unhinged

I'd love to know stories about them though, I've never spent much time around these kinds of men

DoYouReally · 12/01/2025 17:46

I find it the opposite - complete turnoff.

Dotto · 12/01/2025 17:55

I think a sizable minority of men entering the military or police have some kind of personality disorder, ime.

Jumpingthruhoops · 12/01/2025 19:35

BobbyBiscuits · 12/01/2025 17:00

@oatmilkchocolate sure, but against all odds. I'd say any other career choices would be less disturbing. I'm not saying all are messed up but it's a serious issue.

Why such negativity? Can't you just accept that such a man might exist?

Honestly, some of these responses are wild! Yes OP, give me a fit, muscular, masculine man - preferably out of his uniform - any day! 😉

Nothing wild about it. Did you read the posts by people who have experience of the military and military men? They come up quite often on the Relationships board too. Same applies to the police.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/01/2025 20:56

@Jumpingthruhoops the ones OP are lusting after are clearly not actual real people, never mind soldiers. 🤣
I am very anti war and anyone I knew who was in the army was scarred by it badly. So I won't change my position.

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 12/01/2025 21:11

Well they're not all suffering from ptsd & have ocd, or are thick. There's a new generation in the military who haven't seen any armed combat yet. My own ds has been in the RAF for 2 years. He's based in the UK & his first deployment will be in the Falklands.
Obviously I don't know what he gets up to while he's away; but we have brought him up to be a respectful young man & he has no issues! My own dad was in the middle east in the late 50's with the RAF. We had a happy childhood & he had almost 60 years of happy marriage until covid took him. There are good & bad people in all walks of life - SO DO NOT TAR THEM ALL WITH THE SAME BRUSH!! 😡😡

Yes, I read them and totally understand how that's the case for many.
However, I'm pretty sure OP's intended for this thread to be light-hearted, so the responses should be similarly so.
Anyone can start a serious thread about the challenges of being in the military should they wish.

I don't fancy the bloke in your photo op, but my dh was in the military so I was an army wife.
He definitely does not have any kind of ptsd or personality disorder!
The most attractive thing about my DH for me is his confidence. Dh is fiercely loyal, protective, very intelligent, and fit. He just has a mentality where he just gets things done iyswim, he never waivers.
I suppose my dh is masculine and confident, but in a good way.

I was an army wife for 8 years. I married a paratrooper. I absolutely loved the life and miss it so much. After 15yrs and going to war DH left to pursue a new career. Due to being in the army DH maintains his fitness and is an ultra trail runner. At 50 he has the same body as he did at 28. He’s not scared of anything is so strong. He also has the sense of humour of a 14 year old! That’s what happens when men mix with men in that life. 😂

My dh has seen active combat. He is the best husband and father we could wish for. I am extremely proud of the service he has given to our country. All of dh's military friends are the same so please don't make comments like this. It's simply not true.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/01/2025 22:22

@TheNuthatch I'm sorry but I'm not trying to be disrespectful to everyone who's in the army. I'm saying I disagree with it. It's my opinion. It's not personal against your husband who I'm sure is lovely.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomewsChristmasBone · 12/01/2025 22:24

The "hot in uniform" starts to fade after a couple of decades of washing said uniform...especially riot gear after two days of training where they are training for fire-throwing scenarios in the middle of summer 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Very similar to mine except police not army.

he's a man of action, an alpha guy. He always knows what to do and never gives up. He is absolutely the most can-do person you could meet.

BIossomtoes · 12/01/2025 22:37

My bloke was an army officer for most of his working life, we celebrate our silver wedding this year. He’s the gutsiest, funniest, most loving and loyal man you could imagine. And the mess kit complete with spurs didn’t go amiss!

Please tell us what you use the spurs for blossom 🤣. It's our silver wedding anniversary this year too.

If I told you I’d have to kill you! 😂
