Came across a video of her speaking last night
I find what she has to say about Islam very interesting, sensible and…worrying
Any thoughts?
I can’t seem to link 😬

? I’m not a first time user, I just thought it was an interesting discussion, can we not discuss things?

Unfortunately it's the done thing on here to ridicule people who don't know certain things. Ignore it- there's enough of us around who will answer properly.

edit - cross posted- hopefully you saw my first reply.

Looks like AS is malfunctioning then.

I find it odd though, to start a discussion but not really express you own opinion. All you have said so far is that you find it 'interesting' and encouraged others to 'elaborate'. The board, after all, is AIBU.

You watched the video OP. What is your opinion on it? Why aren't you contributing to the discussion you are keen to get into? Why do you think it is 'interesting' and 'worrying'?

It isn't ridiculing someone to ask. At this point, no-one knows what OP knows or doesn't know.

I met her about 15 years ago. I found her to be a very impressive woman who has been through a lot. Felt very lucky to meet her. The political landscape was so different and she was much lauded at the time.

I don't pay much attention to news now but I do think she is being authentic. She's becoming less popular because she isn't really on the acceptable side of things anymore, but I hope she continues to stand for what she believes in.

At least, from my perspective, that seems likely. She was always brave so being unpopular isn't something that will trouble her I guess.

Yes I think authentic too, very brave to speak out

Yes she has had lots of the nasty religious side-things you ever heard off happen to her, she speaks openly about this and condems it. Rightfully so. She breaks open shit containers and it frightens me to learn how many people dont like that.
She is a woman I look up to very much.

Yes, she seems to have a lot of insight and past experience herself and isn’t frightened to have open discussion, when so much just gets shut down

She's vehemently anti Muslim. Is that what you're skirting around when you say she's 'interesting'? She's cited a lot by the far right or alt right.

I said the interview was interesting about mixing cultures and how problematic that can be
It’s understandable she’s anti muslim given her past, that’s her right isn’t it though

It's everyone's right surely? I can't stand any religion. However I don't associate with the far right and talk about not letting religious people into the country.

She worked on a film about the oppression of women in the name of Islam and the director was assassinated by an Islamist terrorist, the same terrorist issued death threats against her. She's had several groups called for her to be kille. She's a former hijabi and believes in the reform of Islam and to end fgm, the denial of education for girls and honour killings. She's very against political Islam. I find her very interesting and have time for a lot of what she says. I disagree that Muslims should convert to Christianity. I'm a humanist. I do see that political Islam and Wahhabism aren't really compatible with Western European Ideals. I don't consider that anti Islam

She doesn't come across as sensible at all to me. I saw an interview with her once and she was talking absolute nonsense.

Europe must leave the Geneva Convention (?)
The people jailed for inciting riots were locked up for 'sharing information'.

Load of gibberish.

She has been through a lot to be fair, I think if I had had her life experiences, I would be strongly against Islam too because most of the (very serious) bad things that have happened in her life have been as a result of Islamic extremism. The same way that people who have really been hounded by the worst of left wing progressivism tend to wind up strongly anti-"woke" and liable to lump all left wing/progressive ideas in together. And people who have suffered as a result of violence from the right (I don't agree with his views but Owen Jones absolutely has) tend to be very easily put of an argument if it seems at all "right wing". So I think its definitely worth listening to what she has to say- she isn't agitating for the sake of agitating/causing chaos. But hers shouldn't be the only viewpoint (in the same way that Owen Jones shouldn't. He comes across as hysterical when he talks about the danger to trans rights. But its because he experienced aggression for being gay so assumes its the same thing.)

We all see things through the filter of our experience is my point really.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 11/01/2025 23:44

Oh ffs not another faux innocent muslim bashing thread. I see you OP and not falling for it.
Ayaan had a shit childhood. I wish her healing, i really do, but she's got an axe to grind and is siding with racists in order to do it.

She's been big in alt-right circles for years.

It's a shame you don't read the news much, but I'm glad you're interested now! it's so so important to understand the world we live in! I'm sure MNers would be happy to suggest reputable sources to start.

Your comment is snide, patronising and likely to put people off trying to broaden their knowledge for fear they'll meet attitudes such as yours.

I don't doubt her experience, I doubt the veracity of what she says.

She's a darling of the far right because of her anti Muslim, anti immigrant stance. She talks about coming out of the ECHR to prevent Muslims from coming to the UK and believes the rioters were unjustly jailed.

She thinks Starmer is in league with Muslims and is colluding with them.

That's a bit patronizing. I wouldn't say a campaigner against forced marriage and female genital mutilation is "alt right".

Not everyone thinks the same thing. We don't need you to tell us what we can read and what we can't.

I’ve heard of her. She wrote a book that I read many years ago. She wrote about her experiences converting to Islam and then leaving. I believe she moved to Amsterdam as a refugee? It was a long time ago. Maybe became a politician too. Her book when I read it was interesting.

She was born a Muslim in Somalia and escaped a forced marriage. She is not a convert

"Holland's most strident critic of Islam, the Somali-born MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, is today expected to announce she is quitting politics and moving to America, amid allegations that she lied to gain asylum..."
Apparently her claims about forced marriage etc are made up too.
