Get themselves home from a local school, let themselves in and stay home alone for an hour or so until adult gets back home?

8

FanofLeaves · 11/01/2025 15:06

It depends on other factors though- the personality of the child, the distance from school to home, do they have to cross major roads etc. it’s not a one size fits all!

I did this from 11/12.

8 seems crazily young to be expected to manage that!!

Starting secondary school so 12/13

Poppymayday · 11/01/2025 15:07

To add, they are sensible, wise and oldest in school year (September born).

Depends how far the school is surely?! DD was 10, year 6 but usually walked with her cousin (similar age). One busy main road to cross.

Didntask · 11/01/2025 15:07

Ds can't get himself home, but all the other stuff I'd be pretty OK about. He's 9.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 11/01/2025 15:08

Year 6 - so 10 turning 11.

or thereabouts - obviously depends on length of walk, roads to cross etc on the way and how sensible and comfortable the child is with it too

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/01/2025 15:08

8? Blimey. I would say 11, 12.

Not sure if you missed the part about staying home alone.

Mine were 11, but transport was needed, a bus or train. Start of year 7.

SnowyIcySnow · 11/01/2025 15:08

Depends on the route home.
Probably 10 or 11 at the earliest. Older for some kids.

2chocolateoranges · 11/01/2025 15:09

I’d say 11 or 12.

8 is just ridiculous. An 8 year old responsible enough to have a key to let themselves into the house and be alone until a parent comes home! Stupidity and neglectful

Zippidydoodah · 11/01/2025 15:09

Year 7 (11-12)

rockingbird · 11/01/2025 15:09

Secondary age 11-12 depending on the journey home, major roads and child's common sense. My neighbours ds is the same age as my youngest but far less mature. Each child is different as is ever route home from school and the dangers it presents.

IKnowThis · 11/01/2025 15:09

Secondary age so 12 if September born

christmasearly · 11/01/2025 15:09

I can't believe someone said 8...

CarolDunne · 11/01/2025 15:10

9/10/11 I. This house

Did they also stay home alone one back home?

OP posts:
Birch101 · 11/01/2025 15:10

I did that in the last term of Y6.

Would walk to town, catch a bus to residential area and walk home.

Iloveeverycat · 11/01/2025 15:10

Starting Secondary school.

Comedycook · 11/01/2025 15:10

About 11

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 15:10

Children walk home from school from age 9 around here. I'd say year 5.
