To think that crispy corn/beans are healthier than crisps?

Want to start by acknowledging that nothing crunchy and fried is as healthy as a plate of steamed broccoli etc.

But, if I want a crunchy snack, AIBU to think that the packs of crunchy broad beans/corn etc are healthier than normal crisps?

DH think they're just marketing nonsense and we should stick to normal crisps at they're cheaper. I think these are slightly better for us. AIBU?

I think they tend to have more fibre in them too. Some of the pea and lentil crisps are definitely marketed as high in fibre.
I used to like kale crisps but they don't seem to stock them much these days.

GroovyChick87 · 11/01/2025 13:56

They will have more fibre but if they are cooked in oil they are probably as many calories as a packet of crisps. So it depends what health benefits you're looking for.

IKnowThis · 11/01/2025 14:34

I suppose more fibre is a bit healthier even though there's no calorie difference.

I mean they are all highly processed crap at the core. If you love them, why not? But if you're eating them thinking they're 'healthy', they aren't.

If you want crunchy and healthy, you can make kale chips with Parmesan. Or celeriac chips.

GreyCarpet · 11/01/2025 14:37

I think any nutritional benefit would be both negligible and cancelled out by the overall unhealthiness of a snack fried in seed oil.

I've had them as I like them but they are just peas and lentils rather than potato. Same with any other vegetable rather than ordinary potato crisps.

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2025 14:40

I expect any difference would be negligible.

Simonjt · 11/01/2025 14:41

I love fried corn, but as a type one diabetic my blood sugars do not!

JC03745 · 11/01/2025 14:41

What do you mean by healthier? Less fat, less salt, less calories or something else???

Those bean snack things are still fried in oil and covered in salt. A random search or corn chips vs corn snacks:
Corn chips Whole corn snacks
Kj 2100 ................1700
Fat 21g................. 13g
Carb 65g............... 66g
Salt 0.9g ................1.5g
Fibre 5g.................. 7g

MissDeborah · 11/01/2025 14:44

Just have the occasional packet of crisps

Swapping for highly processed corn/ bean snacks and thinking they are healthy is why people are obese.
Plus the wind would be terrible!

Air fry/oven bake half a tin of chickpeas? Cheap, yum & you can spice them however you like.

midgetastic · 11/01/2025 14:47

Make your own popped corn ?

Although it's always better with lots of butter and syrup you can use less butter and a spice mix instead

Tajin is great on it.

HawkinsTigers · 11/01/2025 14:48

Make your own crispy chickpeas - in the air fryer of your choice have one - taste better, are cheaper and have more protein and fibre.

ladymalfoy45 · 11/01/2025 14:53

Recipes please. Thank you.

FiveTreeHill · 11/01/2025 14:54

You mean like the whole broad beans that have been deep fried or roasted?

Most brands aren't highly processed. Ingredients are just beans, oil and salt. Probably higher in fiber than potato crisps but I think would have a negligible effect on your body if only eating occasionally. I don't really see the difference tbh between a packet of roasted peanuts and a packet of roasted broad beans? Less fat in the broad bean packages by a long way?

Yes those kinds of things. Like the Graze type snacks.

I'm thinking they have more fibre, maybe more vitamins?

I don't like popcorn, I want something hard and crunchy. Will give the chickpeas a go, how long in the air fryer and any oil?

I started air frying potato peelings the other week. Brilliant! I probably added far too much salt to consider them healthy though!

That is an epic idea - I am going to follow your lead. Season them with salt and maybe a bit of rosemary too? You are a genius!

Yes I was very impressed by my own culinary genius. Then I tried the carrots and parsnips but burnt them to a crisp - will try again though for about 7 minutes.

Were you inspired by those Tyrell's vegetable crisps? I bloody love those.

I've got carrots too - will have to give those a go as well!

ladymalfoy45 · 11/01/2025 16:58

Anyone tried kale crisps? I've got an air fryer recipe book but I'm not sure about kale.

There was a programme on marketing and the fact that these were sold as the healthy version of crisps.
They had far more fat and calories.
Just have a normal bag of crisps!

They may be healthier than crisps, but crunchy broadbeans/corn are minging. As for kale crisps? Bleurgh! 😖

Give me a pack of tasty Seabrooks baked crisps any day. Delicious! 😋

I'm not pretending they are a health food - where did I say that?! I love the taste and would like to make them at home because it's cheaper!
