To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:18

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

You really think the editors decide what you’re watching on the tv?? Next you’re going to tell me electric cars are good for the environment!

Sorry, no, yeah, you’re right. It IS the lizard people deciding.

Ursulla · 11/01/2025 01:15

Tbh they'd be ok if only we hadn't had the covid jags, but as it is those radio transmitters in my nipples play merry hell with the government controlled charging points.

I suppose you also think that politicians are here to serve the people too? 🤪

user1492757084 · 11/01/2025 01:17

Yes, spot on. I truly believe that too.
However, I don't need to see so much footage on my news to keep believing that, nor to plant trees, use less fuel, recycle food waste and to consume less.

Chuchoter · 11/01/2025 01:20

Over 120 killed in the recent earthquake in Tibet but the media has been fairly quiet about that.

How many people have died so far in the Los Angeles fires? 10/11?

The media control what they want you to be upset about.

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down. OK, really sad. Some of the scenes are apocalyptic. Yes, it is newsworthy. But does it have to be on ALL the fucking time? Surely other stuff is going on they could report on.

What a shockingly insensitive post, shame on you. One of my good friends lost their house. They are not rich celebrities but everyday people with 3 small children. Absolutely heartbroken for them and everybody else whose lives have been forever changed by these fires.

So what is chosen to be reported, and why? You haven't said.

Why you think? So we can argue like this rather than see the BIGGER picture.

I have no idea without you saying what you think is the bigger picture? I might agree with you! But without you saying what you mean, who knows?

As for you, and your mate, it’s honestly quite worrying that you felt so upset about my original post that stated that media bias is a thing (FACT), that the news is never transparent, and that all human suffering is a tragedy that you felt the need to do all of this?! Out of all the posts on here that’s the one you felt so triggered by?! The planet is honestly screwed, and climate change is the least of our worries with attitudes like yours. Maybe it’s the covid jab gone to your head 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ursulla · 11/01/2025 01:30

Yeah prolly.

The bigger picture is that the world’s run by malign lizards and only MumWifeOther can see what’s real, sadly she’s limited to posting about it on mumsnet. No worries, Elon will save us.

Same for you. Seek help for all the weird hatred in your heart.

Ursulla · 11/01/2025 01:32

That is NOT true. David Icke can see them too.

Monty27 · 11/01/2025 01:36

FWIW they're hiding behind bad news, which it is.
Meanwhile back at the ranch babies are neglected, abuse and rape under our very eyes, old people are uncared for and can't put their heating on or they go hungry.
The working population are struggling to keep a roof over their heads , working their asses off and can't have families because they can't afford to. There's little joy left. Education health and social care, NHS and their staff are treated like cheap labour as in the public sector and in hospitality our country is becoming poorer by every fiscal year. It's a sham. Politicians are not worth their weight in air. Corruption and greed ain't got nothing to tell us except they've spunked the economy.
A good time to bury bad news I guess. (I won't mention policing being cut back yet again following another teenager being stabbed, and another. It's lawless society just like in a crime drama).
Sad times for our population.
What do we do? Nothing.

KnightsTemplar00 · 11/01/2025 01:39

why do people rely on the tv news to say what the news is, surely its better to use the news sites themselves
?

There were massive wildfires in Australia a few years ago, and people definitely cared.
Koalas burned, wildlife and farm animals- Horses, the advice was to leave them without head collars and to let them protect themselves as best they could- It was shocking.

The American fires- looks like the buildings aren’t built of brick and stone - but look to be flimsy timber and board (?).

Edited

Homes in California aren’t flimsy - there are strict building regulations due to earthquakes. Timber framed houses are actually quite strong. A lot of North American homes are built that way. Canada for example builds this way and has extreme weather of sub zero degree weather in the winter and 30+ degree weather in the summer - what you do find is well insulated houses that are cooler in the summer and more insulated in winter. Not very country in the world builds brick houses to a British standard.

Why is Gaza more important than Syria, the Uyghars or anything else? The worst fires in history in a country that is our closest ally is
pretty important news to most right-thinking people. Makes more sense than fretting about Gaza - a place that we share no cultural ties with. If anything our values are antithetical.

Free the hostages.

Because Gaza used to fall under the british mandate which was split when the British Government, post war, gave Israel (the original sized one) to a new Israeli government

(Sorry but anybody questioning something like this clearly doesn't know the history & yes it should be reported on here in the same way as if we had split new Zealand/Australia & they were now at war following a 70+ year conflict with each other - you can always choose to ignore or follow the war in Syria instead)

Americans better get used to it . They make up 5% of the worlds population and consume 25% of the worlds resources. They are climate change deniers who have voted in a monster. They are not prepared to alter their lifestyles to help the planet in any way. They idolise their cars and the average American walks 350 yards a day .
Their level of consumption is staggering. Sympathy for Paris Hylton ? Have you seen “ The Bling Ring”

I do have some empathy for people losing everything but until America wakes up and accepts their role in these disasters then things are guaranteed to get worse.
The same goes for the rest of the world by the way.
As for the poor Palestinians in Gaza , they are being bombed into oblivion by a murderous Israeli regime wholly aided and abetted be America. Go figure as the Americans would say.m

MonkeyRum · 11/01/2025 02:00

I wonder if there would have been the same reaction if this had been another Boxing Day tsunami?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a rich row of houses in LA or a poor row of houses in Gaza. Devastation is just that and humans in immediate distress deserve empathy.

Is this the best you have to offer ? Crude vulgar language ? There is plenty of other news if you even bother to look . This is a major event and many of us have friends and family in the area .

Don’t paint all Americans with the same brush ! I am an American but live in the UK . Actually, British as well now . All my family clare very much about the environment . My brother has an Environmental Science degree . None of us voted for Trump . All my family are fit and healthy . Your commentary is uneducated and just plain wrong . I think you would find most Californians do not fit your small minded view of what the USA is . Yes , too many not so well educated people bought in to the Trump Agenda and were influenced too much by the falsehoods of social media and Fox News . It was a slim majority by the way . Yes we all need to pay more attention to the environment . Best is to start at home ! I look forward to voting in the next UK elections to do my part .

I think it's an important story because it illustrates the impact of climate change. This will be happening in Europe in 50 years or less.

But some of the reporting is insensitive, given the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Just had to turn off the news as couldn't stand listening to the guy whining about losing his olympic medals in the fire...they are just things FFS...people in Gaza are losing their children every single day.

When is the world going to help the children of Gaza? That's the news we need to hear.

He was not whining about the medals he left behind . He said he was grateful he grabbed his dog which was more important and was grateful to have survived . What is with peoples listen comprehension ? So many twisted interpretations here . There is plenty of other news and if you want the latest on Gaza try using a search engine . You will find it !

I think the wider issue is we are served up US news constantly on the BBC. Yes the fires are appalling and the issue of climate change is of interest. But the coverage is vast dominating most of the news programme. While just this week we’ve had Elon Musk influencing British politics.

Yet we haven’t heard much at all about Gaza this week for example. And sadly this is a war that is going to impact our country. I think OP is saying they’d like to hear about global news on the BBC more. Sudan is rarely reported on. Many people in the UK couldn’t even tell you where it is. Does Sudan influence the global stage and our politics? No, sadly not. We can still care but not if we don’t hear about these events in the first instance.

excellent post. I spend a month of my time in the US every year. I love it there and would live there if I could but I feel the UK news is too US centric.

And yes the lack of coverage about Sudan is awful.
