To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:18

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

OP posts:

Media bias is very much a thing. Mainstream news never reports on anything transparently, honestly or equally. There are multiple tragedies occurring and no one innocent deserves to suffer at the hands of evil due to greed. Sadly, until we view everyone as equal nothing will change. The media intends for it to be this way. YANBU but are you really surprised?

user1492757084 · 11/01/2025 00:53

Yes, I agree. I prefer my news to be much more locally focussed.
I like to see 80% GOOD and bad local news.
World catastrophes - like Gazza, famines, wild fires, floods, plane crashes etc. - I like to be about 20% of news content.

People can then look up more details about an occurance themselves and, in effect, tailor their further news to suit.

If I were in the US then I would expect to hear more about the fires. If I were in Israel, I would expect to hear more about Gazza. If I lived in Los Angeles, I would expect to hear only bulletins about the fires and how to help, escape and assess my movements for coming days.

The constant horrific visual images of the fires is making my safe life seem alarming.

ChewbaccasMrs · 11/01/2025 00:55

OP I can't believe you've started this thread, talk about being oblivious you do realise that some of the women that post on mumsnet are from the very places that are burning and that others will have family and friends living there.

Giving a shit about what's happening in America doesnt mean people don't care about what's happening in Gaza or about the many other horrific things going on around the world, people can be worried and upset about more than one thing at a time you know.!

HellsBells67 · 11/01/2025 00:55

Are the news programmes covering the fact people have been arrested for deliberately starting fires in Los Angeles?

MumWifeOther · 11/01/2025 00:58

oakleaffy · 11/01/2025 00:41

There were massive wildfires in Australia a few years ago, and people definitely cared.
Koalas burned, wildlife and farm animals- Horses, the advice was to leave them without head collars and to let them protect themselves as best they could- It was shocking.

The American fires- looks like the buildings aren’t built of brick and stone - but look to be flimsy timber and board (?).

Edited

The Australian fires were caused by colonial settlers not respecting or understanding the land and listening to what the native population have been warning them about.. it’s not all due to climate change.

Wonder how you'd feel if you're house burned to the ground with all your possessions in it maybe you'd like it to be headline news

Stop with the brainless ‘the media are evil’ claptrap. Would you rather have ‘everyone makes and decides on the news themselves’? How is that going for you? Facebook? X? Bias is NOT to do with how much time the show spends on ‘each side’, those are editorial decisions. No, it’s not possible to report on every lost cat etc. Editors have to decide what’s newsworthy, I believe they do their best. Bias is to do with whether there is an underlying agenda, see GB News, it’s completely different to what you are describing.

BabyShock879 · 10/01/2025 22:23

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down. OK, really sad. Some of the scenes are apocalyptic. Yes, it is newsworthy. But does it have to be on ALL the fucking time? Surely other stuff is going on they could report on.

Oh no it's so boring watching people have their houses destroyed by fire

🙄

”Editors” decide do they? Get a grip. All human life is “news worthy”.

Too much bad foreign (or local) news is unnesessary on the regular TV news. It frightens the children. It unsettles the household and it is not relevant to people who are not there and who can not help. (kids, old folk, dogs and people who have no money to give.)
Most adults have options of looking up on their phones for further details of horrific footage.

children shouldn’t be watching the news.

There will be a black rectangle in your home with buttons on it. Find that and press up or down, it should change the channel for you if there are batteries in it.

Local news exists.
Where do you expect to ‘look things up’ about events that you deem important? Could it be national and international news?
Sorry that other people’s suffering is encroaching on your nice life, perhaps get back on social media?

Bollocks.

"In New South Wales the legislation says the bushfire danger period is October 1st to March 31st, we regularly now get fires from August."
The Bureau of Meteorology's latest State of the Climate report found there had been an increase in extreme fire weather, and the length of the fire season, across the country since the 1950s.
It found that had led to larger and more frequent fires, particularly in the country's south.
And it's not only the season being stretched that is presenting a problem, but the more frequent extreme fire behaviour that comes with it.
"You get pyro convective storms, that means the smoke plume from the fire pushes up into the stratosphere and forms storm clouds," Mr Mullins said.

'We burn all year now': What Australia can learn from California fires

The deadly winter fires in California are another warning for Australians to reassess climate risks, where we live and how we deal with emergencies in the future, disaster experts say.

It’s funny, I’m sick of hearing about Gaza day after day. I have no sympathy for terrorists or their supporters.

Im getting a little tired of band wagoners bleating about Gaza after every fire, earthquake and hurricane.

Haven’t read the whole thread but just stop reading the news? Plus, try to empathise. Also, the news is the news so obviously it’s going to be reported on.

The worst were the ones that immediately started with the 'but Gaza!' not even an hour after the German Christmas market attack.

I genuinely don't think they know how much public damage they are inflicting on their current cause/crusade.

The News Agenda is set by the Illuminati, who are giant paedophile lizards living in Area 51 with their leader, Lord Lucan. I know this because David Icke told me.

Yes, of course they have to decide what to cover. If you’re writing the news, you first have to decide what to cover, what’s in it, what’s not in it. That’s literally what an editor does. Otherwise you’d have a newspaper where anyone comes along and writes down whatever takes their fancy, oh hold on, that already exists. It’s called social media.

You really think the editors decide what you’re watching on the tv?? Next you’re going to tell me electric cars are good for the environment!

I don't mind hearing a little of all international news every day then, if I want to see more detailed stories on the fires, for example, I can log into US or Los Angeles news and hear accurate and visual accounts. (Many of which are frightening.)
If I want to donate funds, I hunt those details etc.

The fires in California show that no-one however affluent can be protected from the effects of climate change.
if we don’t do something NOW deaths and suffering caused by climate change will dwarf the impacts of any wars.

Spot on
