To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:18

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

I think there was also a problem with forest management, and the reluctance to remove undergrowth in some places? Was it in Australia the indigenous people suggested controlled burn off? This would probably work if you are making fire breaks?

Some Green party-controlled councils were against controlled burn offs. Mostly though common sense has prevailed.

Yes, which is why the terminology has changed to represent the current situation - climate breakdown

It's completely unprecedented and the biggest risk to our survival

I doubt it's unprecedented. 250k years ago something like 90% of human DNA was wiped out. I suspect that had something to do with climate change. And people forget that we are in an interglacial period and an ice age is overdue. Warming, which melts the poles, is the precurser of an ice age.

They would be offended by your message - the term 'aborigines' is now seen as offensive. It is Indigenous or First Nations People. And they don't want or need your sympathy.

There is no right not to be offended. But I thought indigenous peoples was the preferred term?

scalt · 11/01/2025 13:50

This is precisely why I don't watch or listen to news any more. I completely abandoned any form of news in 2020 when the BBC kept going on about corrrrrrronavirus, and I've never looked back. I take the view that if there is something really, really important happening in the world, I'll find out about it one way or another. I will not have my telescreen television spoonfeeding me doom and gloom, to satisfy some billionaire's narrative.

Switch off the news, it's bad for your health. Probably best to switch off social media as well, including and perhaps especially Mumsnet.

LegoBingo · 11/01/2025 13:53

It's a disaster. Just switch off the news if you dgaf

helibirdcomp · 11/01/2025 13:53

bbc should cover disaster but some of the Americans they had on were terrible. One bemoaned the fact that his favourite seafood restaurant was gone. Another listed ALL the famous names who had lost their homes So insensitive

LegoBingo · 11/01/2025 13:54

Chuchoter · 11/01/2025 01:20

Over 120 killed in the recent earthquake in Tibet but the media has been fairly quiet about that.

How many people have died so far in the Los Angeles fires? 10/11?

The media control what they want you to be upset about.

That they know of.

That seafood restaurant is one of many. It's people's livelihoods.

They aren’t squabbling? It’s because of western interference.

Yep, and our hominid ancestors also went through a population bottleneck in the Pleistocene caused by climate change that reduced populations from 100,000 to 1,000.

This isn't a comfort.

I'm not the only one using the term 'unprecedented' (see a snapshot below). If 'many of the changes observed in the climate are unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years' and the above is the baseline, we are still fu**ed as a civilisation.

The timing of unprecedented hydrological drought under climate change - Nature Communications

Significant regional disparities exist in the time left to prepare for unprecedented drought and how much we can buy time depending on climate scenarios. Specific regions pass this timing by the middle of 21st century even with stringent mitigation.

No I did not say LA is only white people 😄

I said white people were affected - which is why it has become a constant news story.

When half a million people were affected by floods in Yemen last year it was on the news for half an hour (ish)

Don't even TRY to backpedal. I know what you said. You know what you said. EVERYone knows what you said. At least own it.

You said 'the media only cares when it's white people affected,' even though only 37% of L.A. is white. An ignorant, clueless, ill-informed remark, from someone who clearly knows NOTHING about that part of the world.

You made a gaffe and made yourself look daft. No getting away from that I'm afraid @ticktickticktickBOOM

As I said, at least own it, and admit you are wrong. You may be able to save a shred of dignity at least! You're embarrassing yourself with your childish LOL-ing emoji and denials of the giant gaffe you have made!

MumWifeOther · 11/01/2025 14:05

Yes, you are right.

No, you are wrong. Every year there are controlled burnoffs and massive fire breaks put in. Some years the weather is not conducive to safe burning and less is done than was planned.

You keep acting as if a country that has being managing forest fires for centuries has no idea how to prepare for them. Sometimes the combination of weather, winds, and other forces - as per Los Angeles now - overwhelms man's ability to handle them and all that can be done it to minimise the damage to life, and if possible property, and to try to contain them.

Even if this is true, it just goes to prove why sacred land shouldn’t be over built on by settlers.

Cattyisbatty · 11/01/2025 15:13

I hate whataboutery especially when Gaza is involved. What about the hostages? Haven't heard much about them lately, eh?

Obviously the fires are big news, areas of a big city are going up in flames due to the climate crisis.

Even if this is true... You seem to have strong opinions about things you know sweet fuck all about.

Netanyahu is not interested in freeing the hostages. He's just interested in obliterating the Gazan's off the face of the earth, be they women, children, babies, medics or journalists.

What has this got to do with fires in LA?
