To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:18

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

Longma · 11/01/2025 10:40

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down

Not everyone affected is rich.
Do rich people deserve less sympathy when their homes burn down?
If so, why? Doesn't matter how much money you have when personal possessions are lost forever, including many sentimental items. Surely most people are capable of showing empathy to anyone in that situation?

Why Gaza as the only comparison?
What about disasters and atrocities all over the world?
What about the state of things over here in the UK?

DecayingRelic · 11/01/2025 10:41

I agree there has been far too much coverage of it

ChimneyRock · 11/01/2025 10:44

I despair of people sometimes.
This thread is a horrific example of how insular, selfish and lacking in empathy some are.
I am embarrassed for them.
To the other nationalities on here, please know that those posters do not represent the rest of us.

I’m not rich. I live in a mortgaged house (two years left). We’ve received notice to be prepared to evacuate, should the winds change. We have insurance, but if we lost our home and probably had to fight the insurance company to get the fair payment due us, it’s too late at our age to start over. So no, it’s not just rich celebrities affected by this.

I understand not wanting to see US news on UK television every night, but please remember, it’s also affecting normal people, working 9 to 5 jobs, hoping their homes and their families and their friends make it through this okay.

Edited

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope everything turns out okay for you

Wonderi · 11/01/2025 10:50

YABU

If you don’t want to read about it, then just don’t click on it.

Perhaps if you weren’t sat staring at your phone or the TV all day, then you wouldn’t keep seeing it.

Chuchoter · 11/01/2025 01:20

Over 120 killed in the recent earthquake in Tibet but the media has been fairly quiet about that.

How many people have died so far in the Los Angeles fires? 10/11?

The media control what they want you to be upset about.

And YOU can control what you read and watch too.
If you don't like what you're watching and reading, switch over or turn it off.

To Danja

I am talking about the average American not 1 individual family.

It’s not just uneducated people voting in Trump .
Musk, Kelsey Grammer, Kaitlyn Jenner , Dr. Phil, Drea De Matteo, Dennis Quid . Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos, Billy Ray Cyrus. Need I could go on ? I wonder do any of them live in the Hollywood Hills ?

American overconsumption is a fact. The US remains the highest per capita consumers ahead even of China.

National Geographic Greendex found that :

American consumers rank last of 17 countries surveyed in regard to sustainable behaviour and are among the least likely to feel guilty about the impact they have on the environment .

According to Science Watch “ we would need 4.2 Earths in order to sustain everyone living like an American”

The US ranks last on four out of five health outcome measures of the 10 comparable countries examined.
I could go on quoting statistics but I won’t , yes there are some healthy people in America but you need to get educated about your country .

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 11/01/2025 11:50

It looks apocalyptic because it is. We are a rich country and a leading economy and collectively could do a huge amount more to mitigate climate change and, crucially, to adapt to it over here if you don't fancy contributing to a habitable planet. Good luck getting bored of your house flooding in the next few years if you live near a river. Good luck getting bored of future pandemics and tropical diseases migrating to a country near you. Covid got tedious almost immediately but that didn't mean we could switch it off, did it?

Your whataboutism is bs!
How many Palestinians is Israel holding on prisons, many of them children, many without charge
If you actually still believe that this is about hostages you're as ludicrous as your username!

Womens Rights is 'ludicrous', is it, @Naddd ?

That's what you picked out?
You're both ludicrous!!! Do the rights of Palestinian women not matter?

Cognitive dissonance at it’s worst! You’re wasting your breath with the brain washed who lack basic empathy

Attacking a poster's name is vile, nasty and small-minded. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with her handle.
Who said we "don't" care about the rights of Palestinian women?

The Australian fires were caused by colonial settlers not respecting or understanding the land and listening to what the native population have been warning them about.. it’s not all due to climate change.

🙄 As an Australian I can tell you that is absolute bs. It had nothing remotely to do with "colonial settlers not respecting or understanding the land and listening to what the native population have been warning them about". It was arsonists that started it, and the rest was to do with wind direction spreading it.

IdylicDay · 11/01/2025 12:26

MumWifeOther · 11/01/2025 01:06

Play silly (stealing land that doesn’t belong to you) games, win stupid prizes…

Wow. That is incredibly offensive! People who lost their homes in fires didn't steal any land! If anything, it is you Brits that stole it.

devilspawn · 11/01/2025 12:35

If you don't want to hear about something, creating a mumsnet thread about it isn't the best choice to make.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/01/2025 12:50

You have to wonder if those who think it's all Hollywood mansions know anything of America beyond Orlando and their plastic pals Hmm

As so many have said there are plenty of ordinary folk caught up in this too, but it's true that with needing to fill 24/7 news the they always make a drama out of a crisis, even when it's not as serious as this; for example during Florida's hurricane Irma the idiots were saying the state would be "uninhabitable for 6 months"

There are much worse ones than that and I was near Fort Myers when hurricane Ian hit - the waterfront afterwards looked like Hiroshima - but at least when the power goes you're spared this kind of media nonsense

Actually, although a couple of smaller fires were started by arsonists, it was mostly lightning strikes that began the Black Summer fires.

barcodescanner · 11/01/2025 13:24

A family friend of ours has lost her home and everything in it. She really is not rich, far from it!

Viviennemary · 11/01/2025 13:30

Climate changes naturally over the years. Going back millions of years. There has been the ice age. But most experts seem to agree man made climate change is taking place.

I feel more offended for the aborigines to be honest with you. Also, I’m not a Brit.

They would be offended by your message - the term 'aborigines' is now seen as offensive. It is Indigenous or First Nations People. And they don't want or need your sympathy.

Yes, which is why the terminology has changed to represent the current situation - climate breakdown

It's completely unprecedented and the biggest risk to our survival

I think there was also a problem with forest management, and the reluctance to remove undergrowth in some places? Was it in Australia the indigenous people suggested controlled burn off? This would probably work if you are making fire breaks?
