Slightly dramatic title but honestly, my colleague is grating on me.

She is a vegetarian and every January she takes part in Veganuary.

We receive several photos and updates on what she is making for dinner/lunch etc each day and she talks quite a lot about it. I get it, when people are on diets they act the same I guess.

What is really boiling my piss, is that everything I bring to lunch she comments on.

Today is a cheese salad

"OMG I really miss cheese, I so wish I could eat cheese, this is so triggering" (triggering part is said light heartedly.

Yesterday I had a yoghurt and the conversation goes the same way.

Just eat the fucking cheese, why are you depriving yourself so much, for what? Veganuary? Is it worth it?

I just don't get why people do these things and then bitch about it every day. If you want it, have it. Life is too short!

Vegan ‘cheese’ is very acceptable 🤣 she’s being very dramatic!

Oh, no it is not! Any of the pseudo products created for vegans is tasteless and useless. It is an abomination to describe vegan 'cheese' as cheese.
If vegans don't want dairy, don't be demanding stuff that's a pale imitation of the real thing

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 10/01/2025 12:50

Have you thought about putting on a concerned face and saying “Doris, I was worried you’d be like this again this year. Every year, you give up dairy for January and then are obsessed with it, constantly commenting about other people eating it. Why do you do this to yourself each year? If it was a permanent change I’d understand the transition would be hard, but you seem to just decide to make yourself miserable every January for no obvious reason. Are you ok?”

be concerned, worried. Next time she comments - “you’re obsessing about your odd January tradition again.”

This - and I’m a vegetarian!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 12/01/2025 13:55

For those telling the OP to point Doris at the vegan cheese options, if they are tasty (no idea on that) then this would spoil the whole point for Doris and her ilk.

this sort of January denial is some sort of self punishment for the excess of Christmas. She has to talk about how terrible it is because she’s trying to make you all think she’s a good person because she’s exercising self denial after Christmas feasting. Vegan cheese would only be acceptable in this situation if she can bang on about how horrific it tastes. If it’s half decent that will ruin everything.

Best the OP points out this is insane behaviour, which she’s welcome to do, but really needs to stop sharing her insanity with everyone else, you aren’t having the desired response of thinking she’s a fabulous person to do this, you are having the response that she’s nuts.

Tell her to stop spoiling you lunch by commenting on it that you would like to be able to enjoy your food in peace

LittleBearPad · 12/01/2025 16:54

Thus would irritate me long before she got to slobbering over my lunch.

Same. I don't get these people at all.

A woman I barely know that's latched on to me sent me 47 pictures of just her hotel room (including 6 of the actual toilet at various angles) recently saying "I know u rn't on FB hunni, so just letting you know we've just landed and got into the hotel room and we're having the BEST time!!! ⛱️🏝️🏖️🚤

Yes...I can see that from the various pictures of the toilet bowl and seat.

She's also sent me a picture of a box cakes and the caption "It had to be done 😊😊😊😘😘😘".

I'm not on FB because of this sort of shit! Receiving it all (then a "did u get my txt hunni?!) message) by phone makes me want to throw my phone at the window.

I. Just. Don't. Care.

vegan cheese-lol-aint no such thing.its fake cheese.yuk

Ohnobackagain · 15/01/2025 01:03

Grating, @JustSaltPlease very good when talking about cheese 😂 thanks for cheering me up!

Justkeepswiimming · 15/01/2025 07:00

Absolutely cannot stand this rubbish. I can't see it's healthy either. I'm surrounded by people with unhealthy approaches to food at work. Constantly dieting etc. I just ignore the inevitable comments about what I eat, or my weight (I'm lucky to be pretty slim) but I agree. It's tedious. I hate conversations about it, so make sure I never fall into the trap of talking about it.

Emmz1510 · 15/01/2025 07:31

Yanbu. You either believe in the principles of veganism or you don’t. It’s not a temporary fad and stuff like veganuary trivialises real veganism.

NichollsPickled · 15/01/2025 08:52

Bet she’s doing a Pam and gobbling down the sausage like a goodun behind closed doors

Sneezy · 15/01/2025 09:06

Take a whole cheeseboard next time and enjoy every mouthful whilst shes waffling on about being deprived 🤣

autumngirl714 · 15/01/2025 09:13

I hate it when people make their diet my life!
My son's birthday party last year I distinctly remember 2 family members starting their diets that day. I brought the birthday cake out with candles etc and we all had a slice and the two dieters. All they talked about the entire time was how good the cake looked, how they wish they could have a slice, diet this diet that, how it'll be different next year.
It was extremely annoying. Just let the rest of us enjoy!!!!

I know dieting is consuming, I do get it. But yeah, I get it OP!!! She should let you enjoy your cheese in peace and live with her own choices 🙈😂

Motherbear44 · 15/01/2025 09:18

Can I just wave the flag for 'nut cheese' - I call it that rather than vegan cheese which for sure sounds fake. I have tasted several 'artisan' varieties and the soft ones are certainly enjoyable. Just that they are expensive. Along with not setting out to eat animal products I try to avoid buying stuff multiple plastic containers. That means the supermarket versions are out of the question. So I cannot give you feedback on those.

I still agree that the general rules that being polite when eating is 1) not sharing the sight or splutter of what is in your mouth (so mouth closed when eating) and 2) not sharing your opinion about what other people are eating.

Gardenbird123 · 15/01/2025 09:25

Triggering is a bit dramatic!
I would laugh and say yes it's delicious!
Suggest she buys some vegan cheese......

boredoflaundry · 15/01/2025 14:37

@JustSaltPlease do you eat meat? I’d say get a steak … but that probably not very pleasant microwaved in the office …. You could have a warm chicken and cheese wrap or pizza with loads of spicy meaty topping and gooey cheese !!

opinions and fads are fine. But they shouldn’t be inflicted on others !!

toffeeappleturnip · 15/01/2025 15:21

I'm not vegan, half a vegan occasionally, but Nush cheese spread is absolutely divine

Bogginsthe3rd · 15/01/2025 15:22

Your colleague is grating cheese on you ?

ERthree · 15/01/2025 16:18

I would have to tell her STFU and let me eat my choice of lunch in peace.
