Embarrassing problem

Ohwhatnowthenffs · 09/01/2025 22:57

Feel very embarrassed, but also a bit worried.

For a while now I’ve felt a sort of thin, quite hard, maybe two thing I think coming out of my bum 😩 I can’t see what it is and really worried to look, but can feel it if i’m lay down and check.
So hard to explain, is it piles? Or something worse?
I read piles is like grapes? It’s not like that, more like a thin, quite hard thing, freaking me out 🥲

This.
I have had a pile and when it is ‘dormant’ it is similar to what you describe (albeit not as big). When it was swollen up, heck did I know it.
I hadn’t even had any children. I think I got it after a very awful food poisoning episode.

I think it’s actually maybe an inch long or bit smaller maybe

I'm sorry but you have to get that seen by the doctor asap. If you are too embarrassed to say what the problem is, write it down.

Porlocks · 09/01/2025 23:51

It sounds more like an anal skin tag than a pile. If it is, it won't go away on its own and is just one of those annoying things. Search on Mumsnet for threads about anal skin tags - there are many.

Delphiniumandlupins · 09/01/2025 23:58

Can you use a mirror or take a photo on your phone and then you could Google pictures of piles to see if yours is similar? But please go to your GP if its causing you any discomfort or distress, they really won't be bothered.

Emptyandsad · 09/01/2025 23:58

Garlicnorth · 09/01/2025 23:43

She could try treating them, as advised on the NHS page, and make an appointment if the treatment doesn't send the thing back where it belongs.

And then, if that doesn't work, she'll look for some other thing to self-medicate so as to avoid the embarrassment of having a doctor look at her arse.

Meanwhile, time is passing. If, God forbid, it's something more serious, that's time lost - because she's embarrassed

None of us like having strangers staring into our orifices; but it's really simple and when you've done it, you'll wonder what you were fussing about

What makes them swell? This seems to always be the same? Did it go away on its own. I’m literally cringing writing all this, not good with this stuff at all. Never had before, not even when pregnant

Constipation, stress, illness, hormones…so many things.
Mine hasn’t bothered me for years. I do know people who have had them removed

Bogginsthe3rd · 10/01/2025 00:08

Ohwhatnowthenffs · 09/01/2025 23:28

Is it dangerous? Does it have to be removed?

FFS OP. How can anyone answer you here. You need your GP to have a look asap.

LouisvilleSlugger · 10/01/2025 00:12

If you have a partner, can you get him to look and take a photo?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 10/01/2025 00:18

Go and see a gp. They've seen it all. They can help you, set your mind at rest etc. Much better option than relying on advice from MNers. If you've been pregnant, given birth......... showing your bum to a doctor is no worse than that. Arguably its easier. I had to earlier this year......... several times. Male and female doctors and nurses - all over very quickly and totally no reason for shame.

HollyKnight · 10/01/2025 00:18

Why haven't you looked at it? Surely then you could google "piles" to see if it looks anything like it. No one here can tell you what it is.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 10/01/2025 00:26

Ohwhatnowthenffs · 09/01/2025 23:12

How long are they there for?

Sounds ridiculous but really don’t fancy going to the Dr and showing 😩
How do people know that’s what they are to then get ointment for them?

Go to the doctors! They really don’t care what your nether regions look like and have seen all sorts of things.
Have you had children? If so, you really shouldn’t be embarrassed about medical professionals seeing ‘down there’. If not yet but one day you will, you honestly won’t care about professionals seeing ‘down there’ once you’ve had a baby. Suck it up and make an appointment

NC for this!

I had a very similar thing a few years ago. To put it bluntly, I had same as you like a long thin protrusion from my bum. It was like a rubbery skin tag. No bleeding or anything but it itched like hell day and night. Anusol and saltwater baths were smoothing. I must have been going with it for almost two years and then suddenly it just went. l was undergoing extreme stress during those years so not sure if that was related. It's still very odd to think about it. I was also too scared and shy to the GP for it. I would say don't delay and go and see your GP.

Oh god, just go to the Dr

There really is nothing to be embarrassed about (saying that as someone who has had multiple colonoscopies)

I promise you, there are worse things to do than give your GP a flash of your arse!

Galdownunder · 10/01/2025 00:52

Like you I can be shy OP. But I had a burning fire bum recently that was honestly so bad I could have happily shown it to anyone. I went to the Dr and she was so kind and discreet. I got undressed behind a curtain and they gave me a light blanket to cover myself with from the waist down then she came in and I laid on my side and she just said point to where it hurts. Mine ended up being LS but honestly they’re so good at making people feel comfortable- do go and see your family Dr this can all be fixed easily. You’ll be so glad you did.

Frostine · 10/01/2025 01:00

Have you ever had kids,?
Asked this as if the answer is yes , then you've had that body part looked at by a Dr / midwife .
Having it checked out by a medical professional is no different than that , in fact them looking at your bum is no different to them at looking at your knee or foot . It's just part of their everyday job .

SnowFrogJelly · 10/01/2025 01:04

Ask your doctor

Topsyturvy78 · 10/01/2025 01:07

I would try and get an appointment with your GP. But in the meantime try some OTC. I think they're called Anusol suppositories and cream. I sometimes get piles it's my own fault not drinking enough. But it really helps. Sitting in a bowl of warm water and salt is good as well. As others have said up fibre and fluid intake and stool softeners.

Galdownunder · 10/01/2025 01:13

Oh and if it is piles, get some witch hazel and make a little pad out of loo paper and soak it in witch hazel and apply that to the area. Shrinks them right down.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 10/01/2025 01:14

One of the symptoms of Crohn's disease is skin tags in that area which can be mistaken for piles if not properly checked by a doctor. If it is that, Crohn's does not get better by itself- far from it.

This seems a perfect example of what doesn't belong here. It's a Health question.
For anything freaking you out, see a doctor.

Offleyhoo · 10/01/2025 01:40

Could also be a rectal prolapse. As others have said, GP will just have a chat, get you to undress behind a curtain from waist down then have a quick look while you lie in your side. It will be all in a day's work to them and they'll be able to advise. Just do it, you'll feel so much better. Don't worry but do go and see someone.
