Why do so many people criticise vegans?

trunch · 09/01/2025 16:45

I'm a meat eater!

However, I don't understand why people criticise vegans so much.

They aren't hurting me and are trying to save animals and the environment.

What's wrong with that?

Surely people should be more critical of me because animals are killed for me to eat?

What was said when you reported the abbatoir?

Vegan activists go undercover on farms and abbatoirs often, make reports, release footage etc. I did this when I was younger and I’m still involved with groups who do this. Often we didn’t get to find out the outcome of our reports, I do think a lot was covered up, sometimes the farms and abbatoirs were prosecuted.

The animals often have a really crap life and are then slaughtered. I have no interest in demonising individuals, it’s just that animals being treated like this makes me genuinely distressed.

I do understand your distress about the intensive rearing of chickens and pigs, for instance, but the average British cow or sheep doesn't have a crap life at all.

Untrue. Example: dairy cows. They have a shit life. Calves removed from grieving mothers and male ones sent straight to slaughter, pus filled udders, cramped conditions, forced artificial insemination...ending in their own slaughter etc

You sound rather angry, perhaps too much red meat...

I don’t actually eat any red meat.

But they don't get to live long.

They have also been bred, in the case of meat cows, to get really big, really fast. They are mutated versions of what they once were. Its not healthy for them. Dairy cows get to live a little longer but, the milking devices often cause them skin irritation and injuries.

'Not a crap life' is hardly a good one. Or a long one.

How many times have you actually experienced what you've described?

Sorry but it's bullshit. I've never met a vegan like you describe. I mean im sure they exist but they're not representative of all vegans. I've seen vegan activist take things too far but that's not the same thing.

It's you that's being a zealot to be so judgey of people who are, largely, simply trying to do right by animals. It's you thats prejudiced.

Projecting a bit there aren’t you. Where in my comment did I say I had a problem with all vegans if you want to be vegan knock yourself out but don’t sit there and judge me 9 ways to Sunday for choosing to have a different diet. There’s a difference between being vegan and being a loud obnoxious vegan that wants all and sundry to know about it.

OK but you didn't make that distinction in your post.

As I have explained, I physically cannot, "Go vegan" due to disability, and yet again, there's the ableism. I was vegetarian for two decades, before I had medical issues.

I actually live in a farming community, just down the road from a large abbatoir and am friends with some of the staff. They aren't treated poorly at all, are well paid and don't mind their job. My friend's dairy/beef farm is fabulous and the cows are treated like royalty.

Yes, the evidence really is right here in front of me. Evidence that good farming exists, and that not everyone can choose to be vegan.

The thing is by continually attacking vegans for not being 100% perfect, you are displaying extreme hypocrisy, because your own meat eating behaviour contributes detrimentally towards the planet, whether it is medically avoidable or not. You're clearly not perfect.

On a side note, I take back the "go vegan" comment, if there is a genuine medical reason you cannot be vegan (I'm interested to know what that reason would be if you feel able to share it). In the heat of replying I forgot the earlier part of our discussion where you stated that (for which I apologise) but I was trying to point out the ridiculousness of a meat eater accusing vegans of being bad for the environment when eating meat is way worse!.

What I am trying to say is I would like you to recognise the clear hypocrisy in your own comments and logic.

@TeaAndTattoos virtue signalling? Really?

And They aren’t doing it because they care about animals they are doing it because it’s the in thing at the minute and it makes them feel like they are better than everyone else.

I've been a vegan for 9 years, and I'm a vegan for nothing other than animals - I will die a vegan. I live my day to day life with animals at the forefront of my mind, making sure that the choices and decisions I make have little impact on an animals life. I know that I can't possibly live my life without an animal being hurt because of my existence, but the day to day choices I make certainly reduce my impact. How is that virtue signalling?

Wtafdidido · 11/01/2025 19:58

Because of their superior holier than though our way is best let’s ram it in your face attitude. Be vegan but do it quietly as no one else cares. We all make our choices. You don’t see meat eaters ramming their choice down everyone else’s throats

Have you read through the experiences of vegans and veggies on this thread?Confused

Well you'd be wrong there. Because on this thread alone lots of vegetarian and vegans have had to deal with that.

I'm not even vegan and ive had people harang me for daring to order vegetarian options.
'Not one of those vegans are you?' said with real vitarol for example.

Try giving up meat and watch how quickly people start acting like you've somehow slapped them in the face.

Sasskitty · 11/01/2025 20:05

How do you know someone is a pilot?
They’ll tell you..

Vegans are the same.

Vegan bingo. That's about the 30th time someone has said that on this thread alone. Yawn...

Pinkbonbon · 11/01/2025 20:08

The funny thing is as well, people take about these holier than though vegans shoving their choices in their face...and its like...where? Like in your day to day life, you're not going to encounter much of that, if any.

Give up meat however and everyone and their fucking aunty has something to say about it.

It can be the same if you give up booze. People will make out you think you are better than them if you turn down a drink. Like, no, I juat don't drink. It's not a reflection on you or your choices.

Try reading the thread, you will see that many of us have experienced meat eaters ramming their choice down our throat. We do something as simple as ordering a vegan meal and get told we are unhealthy, need meat, have to listen to them making animal noises at the dinner table and if we respond in any way, we’re told we are preaching. 🙄

But what single medical condition requires you must eat meat? It doesn’t exist. Some people may find it easier to get certain nutrients from meat, this is perfectly understandable as that is what they are accustomed to and what they know about. People don’t necessarily want to learn what nutrients are available in certain plants.

And regarding the post that said ‘’google it’, that was in response to a post asking how it was known a doctor was plant based. You need to google plant based health professionals for those plant based doctors that have joined the directory.

Show me where I can safely eat a vegan diet and not risk amputation, blindness, kidney disease, liver disease. Lack of B12 to the point of death due to Addison's and my sickle cell to boot seeing as I have a rather strange type of diabetes to go into the mix not including the IBS and the allergies. Do please tell me how. I’m all ears. My consultant would be very intrigued too as I stump her too at times.

You have no clues on someone’s else’s diet other than your militant views on what’s the right diet which is to you vegan.

you stated that you know your doctors diet why I asked but then went on about the directory of vegan doctors. Plus show me peer medically written journals about veganism that is a better diet.

it’s not a one size fits all my dear it’s what’s best for that person.

Veganism is about doing it to the best of your ability. I think its perfectly sensible not to do something that makes you ill as an individual.

But the b12 thing is odd...because you know there's this thing called a supplement right?
Most people are deficient in various nutrients at any one time. We only really notice it when we are ill. Presumably, if your illness requires lots of b12 in order to prevent symptoms from worsening, you may still benefit from taking a supplement anyway.

I agree with you, I don't have time for the 'everyone can go completely vegan with ease brigade'. Because it leaves no room for individual circumstances. People aren't a monolith.

But anyone can work it - to the best of their own ability. Falling short of anything that causes health issues.

Many domesticated species wouldn't exist at all if not for their use as sources of food or hides or wool. Ditto fowl.

Beef cattle are far smaller than dairy cattle, and a lot more nimble. The cows obviously live a bit longer if they're used for breeding.
Anyway as long as their lives are pleasant, I don't think the length matters particularly.
