Why do so many people criticise vegans?

trunch · 09/01/2025 16:45

I'm a meat eater!

However, I don't understand why people criticise vegans so much.

They aren't hurting me and are trying to save animals and the environment.

What's wrong with that?

Surely people should be more critical of me because animals are killed for me to eat?

@tobee And secondly it is not a reflection on "why meat eaters eat meat" as you seem to claim Confused but a personal reflection on why meat eaters get triggered by vegans.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:36

"But clearly your ego is triggered by my comment 😂."

Is this also an opinion? Or a fact? I'm not sure. Please enlighten me

And another reason.

Please eat a lettuce instead of a burger every once in a while and stop being such a meany. The planet will love you for it 🍃

roota · 10/01/2025 16:39

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:35

lol. Talking of egos how many posts have you written now @roota ?

As I said before I'm not sorry if the number of posts offend you. I am writing about a subject I feel passionate enough about on a debate thread not "to satisfy my huge ego" but to educate and debate.

Cornishclio · 10/01/2025 16:39

I am not bothered if anyone is vegan and wouldn't dream of criticising them. However when they start to judge others for eating meat and dairy that infuriates me. Attitudes like we should all be vegan because eating meat is cruel get short shrift from me.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:41

I don't need educating thank you @roota. I'm all good on the vegan info. 👍

But, there you go again, assuming I'm offended by the number of posts you've written. Write as many as you like. Knock yourself out.

I do eat lettuce, I eat many things including meat. It's MY choice.
The difference between many vegans is they like to force their life choices onto others, making out they're saving the planet too.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:43

And I'm not sure why the quote marks around "to satisfy my huge ego" @roota

roota · 10/01/2025 16:43

So why are you raising my number of posts repeatedly? to offend me? To help prove the OPs point? Or to attack me? You're doing a great job of both I have to say. 😂

Maddy70 · 10/01/2025 16:45

They don't but often vegans are very preachy and that's what is judged

How do you know someone is a vegan...they tell you!

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:45

It just struck me quite starkly where you asked me to check where you'd written what you had in your posts @roota. Obviously this online forum is cathartic for you when you don't mention your veganism in rl.

HappyPanda613 · 10/01/2025 16:46

All this propoganda from the industrial meat complex is turning me into a very unhappy panda.

Vegetables are so tasty, when you cook them in the right sauces and spices, you won’t even want to eat meat again with all the amazing recipes that are out there, at the touch of your fingertips!

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:48

Oh and I'm sincerely not trying to offend or attack you @roota, any more than you would me.

roota · 10/01/2025 16:50

@tobee Goodbye. Have a lovely day.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:51

And you @roota. No worries 😊

KnittedCardi · 10/01/2025 16:52

Slaughter is a fact of meat and fish eating, whether industrial, onsite or by shooting/catching, therefore it is something I accept, as a meat eater, and this is where I differ from Vegans. But as already stated, I do ensure that I buy from reputable suppliers, those who (highlighted as a reason NOT to eat meat, or eat eggs or drink dairy) don't clip chicken beaks, don't cage, are free range, grass fed, don't kill male calves etc etc. It can be done quite easily. I mostly shop at Waitrose or at local farms.

In the next couple of years In Ovo sexing will become the norm. Brilliant. No more unwanted male chicks.

They have to tell you because people keep offering them meat and dairy and it’s a pain in the arse to keep having to say no thank you without explaining why.

also this…
”I’m having a vegan burger”
”ugh why do you have to keep telling us you’re vegan”

“I’m having a burger”
“OH a burger, but I thought you were VEGAN?!! “

🤦🏻‍♀️

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:55

I think my main concern on this thread is that it's worth pointing out that it's entirely possible that @Maddy70 and @macaroniandcheeze have both** experienced this. But obviously their heightened responses will be affected by their own personal choices.

Nope. If someone orders a vegan burger I assume they want a vegan burger or they are vegan .

No idea why you feel you are being interrogated or required any in-depth explanation or lecture

HappyPanda613 · 10/01/2025 16:58

How do you know if someone eats meat?

I don’t know HappyPanda613, how do you know if someone eats meat?

They come on to vegan threads and tell everyone that they are having a barbecue in their honour.

Motomum23 · 09/01/2025 16:52

Because being vegan is a choice that doesn't make them superior but SOME of them think it does.

Drinking wine is a choice. Some people who drink wine wank on and on about it. We don't hear so many people criticising wine drinkers

Ditto people who take vitamins / people who go the the gym / people who like to visit far flung out of the way places / people who like walking

There are a million things people do for choice that some might wank on about but there isn't a groundswell of hatred directed at everyone who who does that thing other than vegans.

And cyclists.

It's just rude

tobee · 10/01/2025 17:01

Some vegans will mention it and some may even evangelise.

Equally some meat eaters will try to trick a vegan into eating animal products.

If you're one or the other, you're likely to remember the small number (who've chosen to live in opposition to your views) that do

lovemycbf · 10/01/2025 17:07

I think there's a certain type of vegan who is militant about it and tries to make people feel bad for eating meat, dairy, honey etc
I'm all for freedom of choice but don't try to inflict your lifestyle choices on me.
You don't hear of people lecturing vegans that they really should eat animal products.

Yes because once a species is extinct that's it. Of course you would feel different if it was human beings, but apparently some species don't matter.

This is not about "species" though, it's about breeds created by humans and altered for our benefit. Some of these breeds would struggle survive in the wild, e.g. wild turkeys can fly but domestic ones can't. I read a book by a sheep farmer recently - his experience was that wilder breeds, like Shetland sheep, were much more resilient than more domesticated, higher-yield breeds, which would constantly fall into ditches or abandon their lambs.
