Why do so many people criticise vegans?

trunch · 09/01/2025 16:45

I'm a meat eater!

However, I don't understand why people criticise vegans so much.

They aren't hurting me and are trying to save animals and the environment.

What's wrong with that?

Surely people should be more critical of me because animals are killed for me to eat?

indeed - should we all go vegan where would the 2.7 million beef/dairy cows live for the next 20+ years?

Where would the 3.7 million pigs live out their lifespan averaging 15-20 years?

The 14 million sheep and 129 million chickens might be easier to house - put your hand up if you can offer a suitable home to these cuties for 10-12 or so years?

Of course all potential new animal homes will need to be fully vetted and pre approved prior to adoption, and the animals will need to be neutered before being rehomed. Who will cover the cost of this?

The cost of feeding, housing, vet bills for these millions of new pets would be ruinous both personally and as a society.

There are 28 million UK households - so that's roughly 5.5 animals per household. I don't want a cow/pig/sheep/chicken though- which vegan will take my 5.5 animals?

Who knew chicken neutering would be in such demand?

Or shall we eat them all first and then go vegan?

This has been addressed several times upthread, I recommend you read the answers people provided above.

Bubblemonkey · 10/01/2025 15:24

Eat what you want & I’ll eat what I want. Nobody else’s diet is any of my business.

tobee · 10/01/2025 15:32

Vegans like to say that meat eaters feel bad seeing vegans as it shows them how it's easy and eating meat and animal products is wrong.

I say vegans are saying this to make themselves feel better that they are eating such a tedious and limited range of things and a don't get the true joy of a varied diet.

But, obviously, I'm wrong and vegans are right . That's part of being vegan; you're always right. 🙄

"That's part of being vegan; you're always right"

Nice attitude. Yet again proving how common deeply ingrained prejudice against vegans is. Hmm

tobee · 10/01/2025 15:48

Ha ha ha @roota.

It doesn't go both ways though? It's literally stated on the thread. Many times over. Vegans freely able to have their ingrained attitude about meat eaters. It's because they feel bad seeing vegans living their vegan lives easily.

Not "I'm happy to eat a vegan diet and think the restrictions are worth it for moral reasons"?

Can you seriously not see the hypocrisy?

This has been answered several times over.

No one us saying 'free the animals into the wild'
Just stop breeding them into existence!

Animals have a high turn around in these industries.

The fact that people keep repeating this nonsense as if all these animals breed themselves and as we should just let the loose, shows how little the general public actually know about what goes on in these industries and how people are proposing to change them.

frozentits · 10/01/2025 15:51

What's the difference between 'prejudice' and 'a different opinion' please?

tobee · 10/01/2025 15:52

I've just seen your, @roota, currently 57 (!!!) posts on this thread saying pretty much this. Many times. Many, many times.

roota · 10/01/2025 15:56

@tobee this thread was created as a discussion about critical attitudes towards vegans. I'm (not) sorry if the number of my posts offend you. If this is not the place to debate these opinions people raise about vegans and veganism, then where is? I'm happy to discuss people's misunderstandings or debate their opinions.

Doesn't mean that I spout this stuff randomly at people in real life, unlike the many meat eaters who spout inane crap at me about wanting a bacon sandwich while I'm ordering a vegan dish (of which there are too many to mention), or put meat in a vegans dish to trick them (it happened to a friend).

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:03

I don't have any misunderstandings about this.

You can post as much as you like of course. As can I with my different opinions. Challenging absurd, ignorant and ingrained reasons why meat eaters eat meat and animal products @roota. And are also able to eat vegan and vegetarian diets.

This assumption that vegans know why meat eaters aren't vegan is somewhat arrogant.

But, hey, go you not going on about it in rl and just going on about it online.

I am vegan. I feel it's because we show them by example that it is easy and possible, and they therefore have no excuse for their choices to eat meat and dairy - people know we don't need it, they know it is cruel, and vegans' mere existence makes them feel guilty for not making the same choice.

This. This is why people criticise vegans 🙄

Sanctimonious bullshit.

VoodooRajin · 10/01/2025 16:07

Same reason petrol heads don't drive less

roota · 10/01/2025 16:07

@tobee I've not challenged any "absurd ignorant or ingrained reasons why meat eaters eat meat" on this thread. I'm not sure what you mean, your post isn't very clear and nor are your earlier ones. If you take specific issue with my arguments up thread feel free to point it out? Where are these posts where I try to "assume I know why meat eaters aren't vegan"? Are you confusing me with someone else?

Please be more clear as you're not making any sense.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:09

Maybe re read your first post @roota .

Honestly, I thought I was going to have to look a bit harder. But there it is on post number 1.

tobee · 10/01/2025 16:11

Oh and I was referring to myself as doing the challenging.

Alittlebitfluffy · 10/01/2025 16:13

I would only do so if they were criticising others for their choices, or preaching.

Do what you want, but don't inflict your views on others. It can be almost culty at times.

Aside from that no issue. But it is a bit frustrating that some menu options are so vegan forward at times.. I bloody hate beetroot, chickpeas and all other random popular vegan meals, sometimes there is so much high emphasis on this that actual vegetarian or meat eating choices are limited.

I have a vegetarian friend and she can't eat out anymore and enjoy things like cheese, eggs, other dairy, because it's either vegan or meat/fish on the menu. I just hate how the trend is dominating so much, it needs to balance back out a bit.

You 'show by example' and that 'they have no excuse' and that 'they know it's cruel'.

Get off your high horse, eat what you like and leave others to eat what they want. Don't try and force your opinion or choices on to others

Whammyyammy · 10/01/2025 16:19

I've decided. It's steak (medium rare) for dinner at ours tonight.

Whammyyammy · 10/01/2025 16:23

VoodooRajin · 10/01/2025 09:33

As a non vegan, i think it's a good idea for us all to consume less meat, given that last year was the hottest on record

Excellent BBQ weather...🥩🍖🌭🍔

X72 · 10/01/2025 16:25

@trunch there are some paradoxes around meat eaters and vegans that I find fascinating.

One is where there is an imaginary expedition of both omnivores and vegans to some far flung place in the East Indies where cannibalism is still practiced. they all get captured and accept their fates. As they are stood there in the pot waiting for the water to boil, would the omnivores or the vegans be more affronted?

HappyPanda613 · 10/01/2025 16:30

Being a vegan is such a good feeling but there are always going to be people who want to drag you down. Just ignore them and carry on being conscious of the planet, eventually the world will catch up when they realise that we are doing the right thing.

Sending love and happy feelings to all you vegans out there ❤️

that clearly says "I think" - which means it is clearly an OPINION. Rather than stating it as a fact. Hmm

But clearly your ego is triggered by my comment 😂.
