To stay in a hotel in my hometown alone

DucksonthePondQuack · 06/01/2025 19:22

Just because I need a bloody break 🤣

Ive been offered a free hotel room in a nice hotel in my hometown, it has a swimming pool, a gym, nice restaurant etc. I’m a carer for my disabled son and this is under a breaks for carers scheme. Is it a bit weird to go on my own in my hometown? I’d get room service, go for a swim, watch TV in bed and enjoy the peace!

You are going for a reason. You are going in order to have a break from caring.

Thanks, I desperately need a break too. Just wondered if people do this sort of thing alone? I’ll probably get room service or just go for it and sit in the restaurant.

Good for you!
Hope you have a restful time.

Postchristmasblah · 06/01/2025 19:54

You should totally do that. Does it need to be in your hometown? I find it much easier to mentally switch off if I’m unable to get back easily.

NeedToChangeName · 06/01/2025 19:54

We won a night in a hotel in our hometown as a raffle prize

I was pleasantly surprised how it felt like a proper break

Hope you have a lovely, restful time

Yes! Last year for my birthday I checked into a nearby hotel for the weekend just to get a break. I went for walks, swam in the hotel pool, read lots and watched TV… best of all I had two nights of uninterrupted sleep, last happened 14 years ago. I will do it again this year and I recommend it to my friends.
you deserve it!

bakewellbride · 06/01/2025 20:04

Do it! I'm doing exactly this this year, local travelodge just me and leaving dh with the kids. Will be first 'night away' type break in nearly 7 years so well due! I can't wait

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/01/2025 20:06

Do it and enjoy every second Flowers

Jesss21 · 06/01/2025 20:23

I do this regularly and I have no children!😯Do it!

MandyFriend · 06/01/2025 20:27

Sounds like bliss you lucky thing. Go and enjoy every second, safe in the knowledge you won't feel obliged to do any sightseeing!

OldTinHat · 06/01/2025 20:29

100% do it! I stayed in a hotel a 4 min walk from my house for a night just for a break - and I live alone! 😆

LividBauble · 06/01/2025 20:32

I do this at least a couple of times a year.

I am very good company for myself. Last week I had a mini break in our local city. Did my hobby and got my favourite restaurant food delivered to the hotel reception. Slept eight hours without being interrupted and then had a several-course breakfast; then took myself to the theatre.

Bonkers that people think it’s unusual frankly.

Bodeganights · 06/01/2025 20:33

I won a really good weekend break in my own town. I went, it was fantastic. It was for two people but the other one couldn't come. So I did it alone. Hotel for two nights, meals out, few drinks. Would do it again.

RobinHood19 · 06/01/2025 20:42

I travel a lot for work on my own and yes, single travellers (male and female) are a common sight. I obviously don't know how many are from the same town 😂 but I doubt anyone cares! The staff are often from different areas themselves…

I have actually booked myself into a hotel in my home city for a few weeks’ time and I’m really looking forward do it. I finish work in the city centre at 11pm and have a doctor’s appointment at 8am, I’m not able to drive that night for a variety of reasons, and trains home won’t run anymore at that time. Using taxis both ways would be a lot more expensive than a cheap room booked during Black Friday, so off to a hotel in my own city I am!

Don't overthink it, just go and enjoy. Sounds like it will do good for you to get a break.

JMSA · 06/01/2025 20:51

Oh my God, of course you should do it. And enjoy every minute. No question about it.

HPandthelastwish · 06/01/2025 20:51

No one knows why you are there though. People regularly stay in hotels alone for work, eat in the restaurant alone, I always ho to a theatre show too.

It doesn't matter where it is, the point is you are in a hotel room with literally nothing else to do, and no one putting demands on your time. I suggest not taking a device you'll doom scrolling on, take a book, a fancy box of chocolates, buy a bottle of something you like to drink may be a fancy shloer ( get a glass of lemonade with plenty of ice from the hotel bar first). If you like self care then take / buy some face masks, fancy bubble bath or whatever you would enjoy doing but don't have time or headspace for or if you have the cash and if it's something you like get a manicure

Opinionsprettyplease · 06/01/2025 19:41

Oh my god do it.
All the (well deserved and very much needed) benefits and none of the travel hassle.
🤗🤗🤗

This is so true!

DucksonthePondQuack · 06/01/2025 20:44

That sounds wonderful!

It was pretty damn good. It was a 20 minute bus ride. I got I think £150 for travel expenses too so i was rolling in money.

HPandthelastwish · 06/01/2025 20:54

I think booking a Travelodge once a month or so for either you or DH to get a proper break is probably a great idea even if it's big a fancy pants hotel.

JingsMahBucket · 06/01/2025 20:55

@DucksonthePondQuack Get that lovely break booked, woman! 💐

Endofyear · 06/01/2025 21:00

This sounds like heaven! Going for it and enjoy it OP, it sounds like you deserve it 💐

Loads of work travellers eat alone in hotel restaurants all the time. That's what many people will assume you are. Nothing unusual about it.

I love a hotel stay - enjoy your much needed break!

Sebsaloysius · 06/01/2025 21:06

Absolutely do it. And knowing that you're not far from home will hopefully mean that you can truly relax and enjoy that precious bit of downtime!

TicTac80 · 06/01/2025 21:17

Honestly, do it!!!

I stayed in a hotel the night before I had laser eye surgery in London (didn't want to risk being late travelling up by train on the day of the op). I found a cheap deal on a room. It was the BEST thing ever! I bought Hotel Chocolate chocs on my way to the hotel. I did sod all apart from mooch around Selfridges, window shopping. I then checked in to my room, had lovely baths/showers, ordered in delicious food with room service, read/watched movies and flaked out on the comfy bed. I had room service bring me breakfast too. It was heaven.

Totally different from your situation...but just not having to worry about housework, cooking, the daily grind, dicey train times etc was fab. I did run it past the DC first to check they were ok with me doing this (they're 18 and 11) and they were fine with it. The eldest actually suggested it.
