Out of date teabags

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 10:28

Oh wise MNers I'm not sure on this one so I'm appealing to your collective wisdom!
Teabags went out of date Nov 2024, there's enough left that I'd finish them around mid Feb. Are they "safe" to drink or should I bin them? I do have more so I wouldn't be without a cuppa

YABU bin them

YANBU give your head a wobble, they are fine to drink go put the kettle on

You were addressing me and my comment about being defensive to OP. You are bizarre.

I’ve explained. You’re pretending you don’t understand which says a lot. 👍

Off for a tea…

Soiltypes · 04/01/2025 17:52

tea bags i prefer fresh in date

MMXXV · 04/01/2025 17:55

I’m sure they’ll be ok OP, definitely not something that would harm you anyway, just maybe not taste as good. Tea is drank very quickly in our house though.

poorbuthappy · 04/01/2025 18:11

Just for some balance I once threw up after drinking a green tea made with out of date teabags. Years out of date though.

I bought a giant pack of tetleys are few years ago, it took me around 2 years to get through them 😅 ( mainly drink coffee) you'll be fine to use them

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 18:15

@Pandasnacks @MoreNetflix I know this is AIBU but please don't fight it makes me sad. I agree with both of you, I do think the PP was more than a bit rude with the "FFS really" but I appreciated the different perspective on the pearl clutching comment.

I also think it can sometimes be tricky to know a posters exact intent given its written word and not verbal/visual to pick up extra clues so I'm just going to assume the best of everybody after reading a thread where an amazing MNer reunited a sad wee boy with his lost bunny, absolutely restored my faith in humanity that thread 🥰

Thank you also to everyone that took the time to post, aside from a couple of PP, you've all managed to tell me politely and kindly that I'm being silly and helped me go back and check it was actually "best before" and not "use by". I'm actually really glad I posted as I'm aware posting in AIBU can bring out the nasties but clearly as you've (almost) all shown, you can tell someone they are being an idiot without being offensive, let's hope this continues to be the trend for 2025. Off for yet another cuppa ☕️😁

Haha is it tetleys or somthing else? If I made tea bags I'd be pleased they could still be used out of date ( its dried out herbs really isnt it so I cant really see how they could go off )

Nourishinghandcream · 04/01/2025 18:19

DogInATent · 04/01/2025 10:31

Teabags might go a bit stale when they're elderly. But as long as they're kept dry they'll be fine.

I have absolutely no idea how old the teabags in the motorhome are (we're more coffee people when travelling), it's quite likely that they could be a couple of years out of date. But they're still fine for a brew.

Same here.👍
The teabags in our Moho are in a sealed plastic box and probably well out of date but they taste just fine.

My late parents would buy a brand new Moho every two years and they loved continental touring going to out of the way places, as such they were pretty much self sufficient for food (just picking up "fresh" on the way).
I was helping my Ddad load up their latest Moho and as I was passing him their "back-up" food (tins & packets) I started checking the dates and saw that most items were several years out of date, indeed they had been carrying the same food for so long that it was already out of date when loaded onto the previous Moho and they had probably done this more than once!
I made them unload it and replace with new tins & packets freshly bought however I know they used all the old food at home (with no ill-effects I am relieved to say).

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 18:23

@NameChanger91736 yep Tetleys although I do tend to mix it up with PG Tips depending on which are on offer!

Now running off to hide before all the comments come in that my cuppa looks shite and is too strong/weak 😂

They won't hurt you, depending upon how they have been stored at some point they will lose flavour but I have used ones that are years out of date.

I was literally looking at that photo and thinking ‘oooooo that’s a lot of milk’ and then I scrolled up
and saw your post about the photo 😂 I wasn’t going to comment on it but it was like you’d seen me coming 😅

No judgement though, as long as it works for you and tastes good that’s what matters

mouse70 · 04/01/2025 18:41

I am not a regular tea drinker. Even the smallest box of tea that I have bought to have some to offer has lasted me YEARS. Im talking at least 5!!!!! I have never looked at any dates on box. Either there has been no problem with taste or my visitors have been very polite and not said anything

Icanflyhigh · 04/01/2025 19:04

Teabags have expiry dates?! Who knew???
😂😂

It really wasn’t that severe, and I was just giving OP a different perspective on the situation. OP was fine and the situation was resolved with a happy ending and a brew, no need to be mad on her behalf, especially at me.

Why are you saying ‘I’ was just giving a different perspective’? @MoreNetflix was talking about the other persons post not yours. She didn’t sound mad but if she was it was at @Lanzarotelady, not you. It does make it sound as if you are replying as Lanzarotelady which is strange and confusing.

You’ve not understood what happened. And you are wrong. Move on and have a tea 🫖

But was it nice?

I only drink Yorkshire tea, with oat milk.

Let us know if you you’re still alive tomorrow. 😅

I’ve read the whole thread and understand. It sounds as though you were replying as lanzarotelady. Not saying you are her, but by saying ‘I’was just giving another perspective’ when morenetflix was saying the post from Lanzarotelady was rude, it sounded like you were answering as Lanzarotelady.

TamborineGal · 04/01/2025 19:26

Not life threatening, just a bit less pungent.

pinkhimalayan · 04/01/2025 19:27

They're so cheap. Why risk it? I'm sure you would be fine though.

glittertime · 04/01/2025 19:31

Save them for tanning.

No it didn’t, if you are going to pop up and be rude for no reason once it’s all resolved please atleast read it properly. Poster L (can’t be bothered spelling that every time) said ‘ffs and pearl clutching’ OP took offence, i said I didn’t think they meant it that badly as OP talked about head wobbling in her Op. Me and OP were totally fine and had some tea. New poster quoted me and disagreed with me about L not being rude. I said I was just giving a different perspective on poster Ls comment as OP read it as offensive but I didn’t. It’s not that hard to understand. It would be really bizarre if I started as poster L and then made a new account (which is 12+ years old) to then give a different perspective on myself. What exactly do you want from me?

Zanatdy · 04/01/2025 19:32

god yeah of course, I’d drink tea a year or more out of date easily. A few months I wouldn’t even think twice about
