Out of date teabags

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 10:28

Oh wise MNers I'm not sure on this one so I'm appealing to your collective wisdom!
Teabags went out of date Nov 2024, there's enough left that I'd finish them around mid Feb. Are they "safe" to drink or should I bin them? I do have more so I wouldn't be without a cuppa

YABU bin them

YANBU give your head a wobble, they are fine to drink go put the kettle on

OP posts:
Motherrr · 04/01/2025 14:26

Totally fine

Wow I know AIBU can be a cesspit but assuming I'm not intelligent and have no common sense.... you don't know what you don't know therefore I'm asking. Currently 7% of the vote is saying to bin them so I'm clearly not the only person who does or does not know the answer. With meat/milk etc it's obvious when it's gone bad, with things like teabags I've no idea but from the helpful comments its clear that they just can taste a bit funny/weaker. I guess I'm now more intelligent than I was earlier as I've learned something new 😁

I dont think 7% are telling you to bin them for safety reasons, i think they’ve not read the post properly. I initially voted YABU because it’s silly to worry about tea bags (plus how can you let them go off 😱) but then I reread and changed my vote to match your question.

It’s a bit weird to get so defensive when you were able to be jokey about yourself in your OP. Give your head a wobble (what you said) and unclench your pearls are on a similar line. Maybe avoid AIBU if you can’t take the answers. Especially when it’s about sodding tea bags!

I see your point about the vote

I didn't realise unclutch your pearls was meant in a jokey way so my apologies for taking that wrong @Lanzarotelady but I stand by calling out the other PP who had a crack at my intelligence, that's uncalled for. Yes I thought they would probably be fine but I wasn't sure as obviously dates are usually on things for a reason and I don't think that makes me stupid for double checking.

I have indeed given my head a wobble and unclutched my pearls and have had 2 cups of tea since posting and couldn't taste any difference 🤷🏼‍♀️ if I hadn't have checked the box it wouldn't have even occurred to me there might have been something wrong with them.

Also thank you to the PPs that pointed out it is indeed "best before" and not "use by" if I'd have clocked that originally this post probably wouldn't exist ☕️

Moral of the story here - drink more tea! You can’t have too much of a good thing 🫖

WonderingWanda · 04/01/2025 15:26

Tea bags have a date on them? It's dried leaves, bit like dried herbs, you won't get sick but they might not have such strong flavour after a while.

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 15:26

@Pandasnacks I normally do lol but went through a phase where I just went off it totally. Happy to report that phase is well and truly over as the kettle is boiling once again 😁 firm believer in there's not much you can't solve over a cuppa tea ☕️

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/01/2025 15:30

I had no idea tea bags even had dates on them. It will be a 'best before' and May just mean that the flavour has gone off a bit (like when you open a jar of spice).

thepurplepenguin · 04/01/2025 15:37

At Christmas I made my mum decaff tea with teabags that went out of date in December 2023 (I did inform her beforehand!) She's the only one in my whole extended family who drinks decaff and she only visits occasionally. Might treat her to a new box for next year!

ThatLimeCat · 04/01/2025 15:50

I was drinking chai that went out of date in 2009 the other day with no issues. It's like when herbs go out of date. Tea might be a bit stale but so long as it hasn't gotten wet etc it will be fine.

custardpyjamas · 04/01/2025 15:54

The flavour might deteriorate a bit but if you are not a tea expert I don't suppose you could tell the difference, they will be fine.

Rosscameasdoody · 04/01/2025 16:02

OP ignore the snarks. Teabags won’t have a use by date, rather a best before date. They’ll be fine - I’d use the taste test. If they taste OK use them, if they taste stale or musty throw them out. There’s a thread here from an OP who wants to know if it’s safe to eat a turkey crown nine days after the use by date, so don’t be made to feel as though you’re unreasonable for asking about tea bags !!

To be fair, the person OP got defensive at started their post with ‘Ffs, really.’ The whole post was completely OTT and rude. OP asked, seems completely fine with most people saying they’re fine, there’s no reason for people to be complete dicks about it.

It really wasn’t that severe, and I was just giving OP a different perspective on the situation. OP was fine and the situation was resolved with a happy ending and a brew, no need to be mad on her behalf, especially at me.

@Pandasnacks I replied to your post because you said OP got defensive with another poster, but my post wasn’t actually addressing what you said, it was about the comments made by Lanzarotelady. Maybe you’re the same poster. 🤔

I stated that Lanzarotelady’s comments were rude and their post was OTT, which it was, with the opening ‘FFS’, repeating of the word ‘really’, going on about pearls etc to someone only casually asking about dates on her teabags.

I’m not mad at anyone, I calmly stated my take on it, but maybe you’re prone to exaggeration, like Lanzarotelady, maybe there is a reason for that.

Why would we be the same poster 😂 can you even do that anymore? This is a thread about tea bags, have some perspective 😂

Can’t believe you are accusing ME of exaggerating here, you are quite funny. I’m not arguing about literally nothing on an already finished tea bag thread though, have a lovely evening.

Yes, some people have multiple accounts. They make themselves obvious to see.

I thought mumsnet changed it so that if you post on a thread you’ve commented on before it reverts back to the previous name you’ve used. Anyway that’s clearly not the case, it’s such a random suggestion! The thread is just not exciting enough for that

I said the other poster was OTT. You then said that my post meant I was ‘mad’ at her and/or you, when I’m not. Yes, I class that as exaggerating.

BobnLen · 04/01/2025 17:32

They will be fine, it's only a few weeks. I suspect DH has teabags in his car and camping bag that are several years old.

You said that poster was rude, completely OTT and being a complete dick. That is exaggerating. Accusing me of switching names to make dull posts on a tea bag thread is exaggerating the situation. HTH

You were addressing me and my comment about being defensive to OP. You are bizarre.

Was I the only one thinking "Out of date teabags..? Does not compute..."

Like the concept "leftover wine"

When OP made a casual post about teabags, it is OTT and rude to start a post with FFS, repeat the word ‘really’ and go on as if OP had stated she thought she’d die if she drank it. OP was just asking, very casually and didn’t seemed too bothered at all.

I’ve explained why it sounded like you were the other poster.
