Neighbour's teen letting dogs do their business on our property

WorthyBrickQuoter · 04/01/2025 09:40

We recently got a new set of neighbours and they have two chocolate labs. The family seem overall pretty nice and they've come over to borrow some stuff a couple of times without much fuss.

A few weeks ago I started noticing piles of dog poop in the front yard. Not on the periphery but actually on the lawn and up around the side. The image below pretty much shows what our house is like compared to the neighbours, for context. I had a look at the security footage and sure enough it's the new neighbours, specifically their teen boy (looks to be around 16-17). He walks the two dogs off leash and we're the first yard they pass. He lets them wander up all the way into the yard since they both pee on the flower bed we have (pretty much the same location as those plants up against the wooden part). They wander pretty far up and around the side as well, which is where I have found the poop. I've also found poop on the lawn. It's probably happened close to 10 times now.

The boy just lets the dogs wander up the lawn and watches them, and when they come back he walks off. Makes no attempt to call them. He even lets them wander onto the porch where they will have a sniff and pee up against the front door/wall.

Would it be unreasonable to camp by the door and approach him next time? Or call his parents to complain? I don't want to muddy the relationship with his family but it's getting to be quite annoying. We don't have dogs so I don't have dog poo bags, I've been using generic plastic bags but am fast running out.

Why do you think it would be unreasonable of you to aka him to stop?

Bellyblueboy · 04/01/2025 09:58

This happens in my street. There have been lots of confrontations and neighbors have spoken to the parents. It eventually stopped.

i would call at their door, explain to the parents what their son does and ask them to make sure it stops.

HelplessSoul · 04/01/2025 10:01

Get their dog crap and shovel it thru their letterbox, with a note to say you have video evidence of their son allowing this.

Fuck asking him to stop. Did he ask if his dogs could do a dump on your property?

Only way you will stop this is if you go nuclear. Start with shovelling it back thru their door/over the fence/on their car - whatever suits.

GrumpyInsomniac · 04/01/2025 10:07

I’d get a roll of dog poo bags and pop next door with a neighbourly “I know it can take ages to find everything again after a move, and can’t help but notice that your son hasn’t been picking up after your dogs when they poo on our lawn. Hope this helps tide you over.”

As your neighbour I would be mortified, but I would make damn sure the problem didn’t recur.

People don't really do this in real life do they, it's gotta be an online thing.

I'm not sure what the big issue is really, just tell them you've seen them on the camera and all them to make sure they don't let their dog go there or to pick it up. It's not a huge deal at all

Absolutely batshit.

Pandasnacks · 04/01/2025 10:17

Speak to him or his parents. I’d probably knock on the door rather than ‘camping out’ though as that’s more confrontational for a first instance. Why you’d think it may be unreasonable to ask them to stop leaving dog crap on your lawn is beyond me though.

Pussycat22 · 04/01/2025 10:19

There are some filthy bastards aren't there. Wonder what their houses are like!!!

Just go and knock and tell them. My sister had exactly the same issue. She bagged up the shit, dropped it on their doorstep with a note and it never happened again. It wasn't a swearing/nasty note, just a simple explanation. Hasn't caused any issues between them (although they are just on hello terms and not best mates, but who cares)

That's a good idea. Massively escalate things before you've even asked the parents, who might turn out to be very reasonable.

I dunno, I’d maybe try some other perfectly reasonable options first, OP. Like speaking to them and telling them that it’s unacceptable.

Then maybe go for the poo posting.

I know!
It's annoying when cats use your garden as a toilet, but this is a horrible reaction.

Nah, that's too reasonable. You need to take a shit on their front doorstep while banging a tambourine above your head. Then do an intimidating haka in front of their house and set yourself on fire.

MidnightPatrol · 04/01/2025 11:10

Report it to the council.

A visit from the council will put a stop to it pretty quickly, they can give out quite big fines.

Just collect it all on a shovel and ping it at them when they leave for work in the morning. You need to be strict and firm with these shitter types.

Floralnomad · 04/01/2025 11:14

Just go next door , tell them what you’ve seen on the camera and found on the garden and tell them to sort it out .

graceinspace999 · 04/01/2025 11:17

Buy ‘get off my garden’ or similar (doesn’t harm animals) and squirt around where they go.

I found it worked. Dogs won’t go if a place fails the sniff test.

DaisyChain505 · 04/01/2025 11:17

For the love of God, just go and knock on the door and tell them what’s been happening. Their son should be picking up the dog shit no matter where it’s done.

gettingolderbutcooler · 04/01/2025 11:18

I don't know what kinds of fuckery my teens get up to.
If my neighbour came and told me this I'd be very apologetic as well as mortified, and would ensure it never happened again.
As well as making child buy them a box of chocolates.

RightOnTheEdge · 04/01/2025 11:19

Wow some of these responses are crazy 😂
I think it's absolutely disgusting what he's doing and you are definitely NBU.
You say the parents seem nice so just have a word with them about it and ask them to make sure their son keeps the dogs off your property and that he picks up after them.

If they are unreasonable or it keeps happening though, then it's totally fair to throw it all back in their garden and report them 😆

... Talking to them isn't a big issue. A simple word over the fence. You know like we used to do before we had to make a Mumsnet post about every interaction with people we had in our lives
