Around New year is such a meh time

New years eve often feels a bit weird, then New years day felt odd today and I just feel quite down, out of nowhere.

Anyone the same?

I think it's the build up to Christmas etc is so long and then it's suddenly over! Bad weather doesn't help. I try and focus on enjoying the quiet of Jan. Is there anything nice you could focus on - reading new books, watching new films, lazier days etc?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 01/01/2025 21:38

Yup I feel this, feel so meh and unenthusiastic about everything!

StMarie4me · 01/01/2025 21:42

Yes it's all a bit meh.

I'm in my 60s, and when I was a kid/ teen, the weather between Christmas Day and the return to work/ school was crisp and cold. It encouraged walks and fun. It still felt festive. Now it's mild and damp and miserable.

New Years Day was always a social event- a family meal or a meet up with friends. Nowadays everyone is just so tired (me included).

Not sure what the answer is though.

SSRI · 01/01/2025 21:44

Religions and cultures encourage a huge midwinter festival, so mostly for us it's Christmas. Which is all well and good but winter is bloody long and what do we do after Christmas is done and dusted? I've kept the tree up, kept the fairy lights up but all the nice food is gone and we are skint. Recipe for depression.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/01/2025 21:44

I think NYD has that Sunday teatime feeling I used to get as a child where the weekend is nearly over. It is more confusing because NYE especially is supposed to be a massive celebration but for most of us what it really means is "Christmas holidays are over! Get back to work! And it's January!".

Yes this exactly

Such an odd time

Totally the same and I don’t usually feel that way. I’m just thinking we have a tough year ahead. Kids and exams and one very frail and ill parent. I can’t summon the enthusiasm somehow. Solidarity!

ilovesooty · 01/01/2025 22:05

No I don't. I'm glad the festive period is over and welcoming the return of normal life. The days will be getting longer and I find today quite positive.

Itiswhatitis80 · 01/01/2025 22:07

It’s more quiet on the streets today than it was in Christmas Day,even my local shop is shut an they were open Xmas day, very weird.

summer3219 · 01/01/2025 22:13

Yes, everyone has been a bit grumpy today, the day has felt ridiculously long and a significant percentage of the household have cried at least once. No particular reason why.

Tangled123 · 01/01/2025 22:17

Yeah, I’m so down today. Part of it is that I don’t want to go back to work tomorrow, but it’s not just that. I always find the Christmas holidays tough though.

Pninnette · 01/01/2025 22:18

Go away somewhere? I left for Seville at 6 am this morning and have a few lovely solo days planned.

JMSA · 01/01/2025 22:19

Agreed!

I barely even know what day it is.

Not that easy sadly. Love Seville though, have been many times, enjoy! ☀️

I loathe this time of year. Getting through Jan and Feb is a chore every year. The weather is rubbish, fall out from not eating as well as I could the last week, sleep routine screwed, constant messaging about 'new year new you'.

Pearandgin · 01/01/2025 22:28

Yeah, I'm a bit meh as well. I keep getting bombarded by the Instagram algorithm with all the steps to take to change life for the better, but I'm going into 2025 with no solid plan. I haven't set up goals because I'm worried that I won't accomplish them. Plus, I'm not sure what they would be apart from the regular ones I always do—lose weight, be better at keeping in touch with friends and family, be healthy, and so on. I feel lost and disappointed that I haven't even tried. I know I can always start any day, but it kind of feels symbolic when the date changes.

soupfiend · 01/01/2025 22:32

Ive booked 3 holidays since xmas and still looking for more

This is how I look forward to things throughout the year, lessens the misery of going back to work

londonbanana · 01/01/2025 22:33

Totally agree. I have felt so "off" since about 27th Dec. Mixture of Christmas being over, saying goodbye to the year, worried about what the next year will hold. I think it's a mindset think though but I am yet to overcome this feeling at this time of year... for as long as I can remember (maybe aged 12 onwards)

OurDreamLife · 01/01/2025 22:33

I’m trying my best to have a positive mindset but I always feel like it’s a hump to get over until we’re all back in the swing of normal life.

Namechange2272 · 01/01/2025 22:40

Yes. I've felt so sad today and can't pinpoint it

ElderLemon · 01/01/2025 22:45

I love it. Total down time. Sleep late, read books, watch crap tv, go for walks, sea swim, tidy the house, cook. Fantastic. Just love it.

SauvignonBlonk · 01/01/2025 22:55

I’m not a big fan of this time of year - it’s very ‘here we go again’: getting ready for the next lot of ordeals that another new year brings. The weather is rubbish too.
I did a sewing job today that I’ve saved for a rainy day today which was uplifting - it’s something for DD and she loves it.

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 01/01/2025 23:03

Roll on spring 🌼.
Snow and ice here in NE Scotland pita to get about.

bumblenbean · 02/01/2025 00:39

Yup. My anxiety and OCD always flare up at this time of year without fail! Sometimes actually over Christmas (I assume due to the build up/ pressure to 'have a good time') but this time Xmas itself was fine but a couple of days later I had a real downward spiral of intrusive thoughts and feeling low- and am still in that headspace.

For me I think it's a combination of lack of routine/ structure during this week, come down after Christmas, crap weather, start of January/ February which are my least favourite months and general pressure to start a new year on a high note.

Am hoping i'll feel a bit brighter when we get back into the swing of things, but for now just solidarity with the meh feelings!

Pinkchilli · 02/01/2025 00:42

YANBU it’s very meh! I always feel quite teary on nye and have a wee tear at midnight after the piper pipes.
I hate the thought of taking down the decs and Xmas being over. Always gives me a sinking feeling. Trying to be positive and have a few things to look forward to in 2025
but its tough.
