Worried to leave my dog

Itslikefloggingadeadhorse · 31/12/2024 21:19

Dd has got to the age now where she wants to see the fireworks on NYE
We live a 5 minute drive from the beach, where we’d be able to see all the fireworks going off from nearby huge displays. They last around 10
minutes from after midnight. We’d be out of the house 25-30 minutes at most.
But I hate the thought of leaving my dog at home alone. Usually when they go off she barks a lot and hides under the bed, she hates it, but at least i’m there to calm her and be with her.
I hate the thought of her being scared and we’re not there.
Dd is desperate to go, it’s an amazing sight on the cliffs of the beach

What would you do?

Is there no one else dd can go with? Does it 100% have to be you or missing out. My doc hates fireworks too so you have my sympathies

bakewellbride · 31/12/2024 21:20

Dog

GCAcademic · 31/12/2024 21:20

No way would I leave a dog who is terrified of fireworks alone in the house when they're going off.

cartagenagina · 31/12/2024 21:21

Is it just the two of you? If not, can’t one parent take DD out and the other stay with DDOG?

Caravaggiouch · 31/12/2024 21:22

Seems a real shame for your DD to miss out because of the dog. If you’re a 2 parent family can one of you go with her and one stay at home? Not as good but at least she doesn’t miss it entirely.

This. The child will have to understand the word no. I can't believe as an owner myself and a parent of three now adult DC that this is even a dilemma.

Gamjs · 31/12/2024 21:23

I wouldn’t leave the dog alone and scared.

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2024 21:24

Do you know someone who could either stay with the dog or take your daughter to the fireworks?

Fleurdalys · 31/12/2024 21:24

An absolute no
Fireworks are shit
Keep your dog safe x

Datgal · 31/12/2024 21:25

No, I wouldn't.
Consequence of dog ownership. You miss out on things.
I know someone who's dog clawed so much trying to get out of the door she caused awful injuries to her feet (nails braking off and bleeding). So sad.

scorpiogirly · 31/12/2024 21:25

How old is the dog? Maybe work on desensitising it if young enough. Obviously not an option for this year now but when I got my dog I made sure to take her walking or running on bonfire night. She'll happily sit and watch them now. Worst thing you can do is cuddle or mollycoddle the dog when scared. Distract it instead.

Ylvamoon · 31/12/2024 21:25

How noisy is it watching them on the beach? How old is your DD? If she's old enough, sensible and it's safe
I would just take the dog with me. I have done this many times one of mine even went to bonfire night & fireworks as a puppy- neatly tucked away in DH coat!

Mine are fine with fireworks, but I appreciate not all are... other option is to leave the lights and TV or radio on to drown some of the noise and flashing lights.

TheWonderhorse · 31/12/2024 21:26

I have a large family of dog lovers, everyone is home by midnight to be with their dogs for the fireworks. It's not really okay to leave them, I'm afraid.

Itslikefloggingadeadhorse · 31/12/2024 21:26

Last year Dh quickly took her to the field nearby and I stayed home
We’ve had an extremely difficult 6 months, just wanted something for all of us, but I will stay again as just can’t bear the thought of it

bakewellbride · 31/12/2024 21:27

Could dh not take her?

I'm sorry you've had a hard time of it lately. Plan yourself something nice for tomorrow instead?

So this year it’s your turn. You take her and he stays with the dog.

Datgal · 31/12/2024 21:29

👆🏻...yep as above. DH stays with dog. You take her 😁

Itslikefloggingadeadhorse · 31/12/2024 21:29

There’s no way I’d take the dog to the fireworks. Already put the tv on loud and lights on etc in an attempt to drown it out.
The largest display closest to us is actually doing silent fireworks this year, but there will be others going off

paranoiaofpufflings · 31/12/2024 21:32

There is not a chance in hell I would leave my dog alone, knowing he is scared of fireworks, at a time I know fireworks will be going off.

Find someone else to take your daughter out, or find someone the dog trusts to stay with him, or don't go.

MrsMitford3 · 31/12/2024 21:32

I have turned down an invite to the pub because the fireworks have started around me-I think from the sounds of it in the road directly outside my window.
Poor dog absolutely terrified already.
So I am sitting with him having a glass of wine and playing Mozart for dogs on youtube. Honestly it is magical. Dog stopped shaking and has gone to sleep!!

Did you even read the ops post?
Her dog is scared of them!
Ffs folk like you astound me

nonbinaryfinery · 31/12/2024 21:33

Do NOT leave your dog alone, it's cruel.

AppleBlossomMay · 31/12/2024 21:40

Glad you've decided one of you is staying home with your dog, it's the right decision. Mine is snuggled beside me right now, there are already fireworks going off in my area, there's no way I would leave her alone. Go on YouTube and type in "relaxing music for dogs", you'll find music to hopefully help your dog's anxiety a small bit. My ddog is listening to her music right now, it's helping!🐾

Floralnomad · 31/12/2024 21:43

Not a chance that I’d leave the dog
