New year fireworks

just why - spending so much time and money on banning log burners, diesel and petrol engines, publicising air quality and monitoring said air, pollution and etc and yet millions of pounds of fireworks are going up all over the world. Can’t afford gas but you can’t light your log burner because particulates you know but we can toast £2.6 million quid on londons fireworks with no regard for pollution or particulates. How frustrating.

YANBU to think fireworks have had their day?

or AIBU and a massive kill joy

Also drone shows are a thing. Whilst things can go wrong, surely they are more sustainable!?! Some countries have even introduced bans on noisy fireworks.

NeelyOHara1 · 31/12/2024 19:09

Lol. It's all copy and paste from previous years anyway,

BoldBlueZebra · 31/12/2024 19:18

It never really occurred to me before to be honest but I recently had a chat with a lady who said that she had a log burner but it was old, so she couldn’t light it because it was one of the ones they were banning - she can’t afford delivered tanked gas and she can’t afford to update the burner she lives rurally so can’t get mains gas.

Ah I think yabu, we need joy

ButteryBiscuitBalonz · 31/12/2024 19:30

YABU.

I love a good firework and am hoping for many many loud local ones.

VacuumPacked · 31/12/2024 19:33

fireworks going off here for the last ten minutes, we can hear but not see
so I guess they are on the playing fields, too many at once for a back garden…
many municipal displays have been cancelled because of high winds so you have
half your wish @BoldBlueZebra

Has she checked that she's not actually allowed to use it? I thought most of the bans were just on purchasing/installing them but not much can be done if already have it?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/12/2024 20:00

Pissing down and blowing a gale here yet there's still some bell ends letting off fireworks...and have been since about 5pm

YABU.

I love a good firework and am hoping for many many loud local ones.

Why?

SleepingisanArt · 31/12/2024 20:22

Here on the south coast the forecast is for 50mph wind and rain around midnight so folks have been letting them off early! Short burst at 6pm and another at 8pm. I'll be watching on TV as I love the huge displays. (I'd be OK with banning the sale of fireworks to the general public but think organised displays are great.)

RainbowSquare · 31/12/2024 20:24

I love a good firework thread. Dogs, veterans, bees, cows.

HOUSE.

Ablondiebutagoody · 31/12/2024 20:29

It's called having fun. I have a few for the garden later. Per head, the London ones seem like better value

Doingtheboxerbeat · 31/12/2024 20:58

I had a loud rant last week about the Christmas day/anniversary of dead relatives/birthday/passing driving test fireworks , but New year's eve is to be expected.

DontshootmyRaptors · 31/12/2024 21:00

Hi winds and rain and still they are going off.
The knowledge that the shit for brains lighting them is having to go out into the rain to do it is making happy.

grafittiartist · 31/12/2024 21:12

We're just celebrating the old year and the new year. To be expected?

YesterdaysFuture · 31/12/2024 21:14

I imagine that the "Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan presents..." fireworks will be any awful box ticking exercise again this year.

No mention of what a dump London has become.

DDivaStar · 31/12/2024 21:21

A fireworks display would cause minimal pollution in the grand scheme of things.

I actually went to a drone show just before Christmas and it was fab but very different feel to fireworks.

I'm a bit sad that the bad weather will mean few fireworks at midnight.

Biffbaff · 31/12/2024 21:23

YABU surely there's a local Facebook group you could moan on instead

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 31/12/2024 21:31

Had one's going off that sounded like bombs going off and we are nowhere near midnight yet

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 31/12/2024 21:33

I hate fireworks, it's blowing a gale (well its a yellow warning) here and some idiot is letting them off already.

Someone let them off on Saturday night, I was totally not expecting it and the cat was outside. He came hurtling in and went and hid. I'm usually pretty good and keep them in, windows shut and tv on.

Sadly one cat is currently missing so I'm hating fireworks even more this year as she's out there probably scared already and now has to deal with fireworks.

Bulletbiting25 · 31/12/2024 21:41

I think organised firework displays are great. Looking forward to it.

User135644 · 31/12/2024 23:56

Just morons with more money than sense.

It’s crazy. The poor birds must be terrified. I hate them.

I8toys · 01/01/2025 00:07

I've no clue why people equate fireworks with fun. Maybe the first 10 times you've seen them but they are a bit dull and predictable after a while. Organised displays to music maybe and drones would be better
