New year fireworks

just why - spending so much time and money on banning log burners, diesel and petrol engines, publicising air quality and monitoring said air, pollution and etc and yet millions of pounds of fireworks are going up all over the world. Can’t afford gas but you can’t light your log burner because particulates you know but we can toast £2.6 million quid on londons fireworks with no regard for pollution or particulates. How frustrating.

YANBU to think fireworks have had their day?

or AIBU and a massive kill joy

And Sir Khan will be wittering on again tomorrow about how much he's reduced pollution and improved air quality.
Then we'll have the sodding red arrows flying over soon for no reason.

Yeah but they're not paid for by the government.

The fireworks are paid for by the Greater London Authority Arts and Culture Fund.

Plus it's a ticketed event and they cost between £20 - £50.

The Greater London Authority Arts and Culture Fund is largely paid for by government grants, with supplementary funding from other sources like the lottery.

It sounds like a warzone here! 🧨🎇🎆

I quite like them but my greyhound is terrified.

My DH has had to play her Gregory Isaac's greatest hits, which is the only thing that ever calms her down.

I was woken up at midnight by all the fireworks around me. It sounded absolutely ridiculous. Never has it been that bad.

Cost of living crisis obviously only affects people when they have bills to pay not when they can blast fireworks and scare wildlife.

The fireworks just get more each year because all the countries are vying to be the one with the best display, it can only get worse

Pets are incredibly damaging to the environment, and I would argue that pet ownership belongs to a bygone era when people didn’t really care about animal welfare. People get pets, including brand new animals created to be pets, knowing that some have problems with fireworks. Fireworks are legal. People use them. Again, this is no surprise.

Apparently you love animals so you get your own personal animal which you know might find fireworks traumatic but you get one anyway because your desire for amusement and companionship is more important. And then you get upset with strangers who have no duty of care to your animal. People who don’t claim to be animal lovers. Examine your own actions!

The argument about effects on wildlife is persuasive but pet owners, cat owners in particular, are often quite unbothered by the impact of their pets on wildlife. This isn’t an argument made by people who care about wildlife, it’s an argument made by people who will use any and every means to get what they want.

It has a massive range of sponsors and is heavily funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

I have a dog and you’re spot on. It’s getting boring listening to people bang on about fireworks and I don’t even like them that much except the main display in London

Fireworks have no business being in the hands of the general public. Letting people set off explosives in residential streets is madness.

I've no problem with licensed displays on occasions like new year or Noemver 5th.

It has a massive range of sponsors but is still mainly government grant funded.

And the idea that National Lottery funds aren’t de facto government grants handled by an arms length body is pretty weak.
